The World’s BIGGEST private Honda CR500 Collection?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We’re taking a look at my entire Honda CR500/big bore bike collection. The Honda big bore bikes in my collection run from 1981 CR 450 to 1997 CR500. A few of them I race, the remaining I have in my collection that are fully restored. We’ve covered some of these bikes in detail in separate videos on my KZread channel. Any of the bikes we haven’t yet covered, we will be doing in-depth videos on in the next few weeks.
As a private party collector, I may have one of the largest Honda CR big bore collections....but we had to do a teaser title. I’m sure a few members and certainly museums have me beat on numbers. I have several bikes that are restored to original condition and some are original and have just been detailed/cleaned. Some I have restored and set up to ride and race and others I have restored to my personal liking. For those that do not get ridden and are fully restored I store them with no fuel in the tanks and if I did a full restoration on them I have not put gas in the tank since nor radiator fluid.
For racing, I am a big fan of 1981-1983 class (drum brake only) and 1984 - 1986 (front disc only). I feel these are the most fun and the bikes are closest to a modern feel you can get. They are a big difference from racing in the 1978-1980 class. You can still jump big jumps with these bikes and they take a beating.
Below are videos that cover each bike in great detail and how I obtained them. Next week, we will be going in-depth on one of the cleanest all original 1986 CR 500's I have ever seen. I am excited to see this video myself! Hope to see you at next weekend’s video.

    Beauty’s dude! You need a 85 and 87 to complete the 85-87 killer tro! I’ve had them all and I still think these bikes are the best 500’s I ever ridden, the riding position on the 87 is very futuristic for 87, and hard to beat the amazing cartridge forks. I’ll be buried with my 87 500 :) Amazing content you have a lot to be proud of 👌

    I'm sure that you've clarified this in other videos that I haven't seen yet, but the '87 and '88 CR500s are virtually mechanically identical, with the only substantial difference being the color of the plastics and the seat. The '88 was the same color as the '89. Also, I believe that the '96 thru 2001 were mechanically identical. Nice collection! I had an '81, and isn't that a non-stock throttle on yours? Whatever you do with that '81, don't bottom out the rear end. Those were known for bending and breaking the shock shafts! Don't ask me how I know!!!

It keeps their men from going out drinking on the weekends to staying fit to keep their level of fitness needed to race motocross and have a healthy husband. I think that is a big benefit for your spouse compared to a lot of their wives husbands that do not have a serious hobby.

    How do you decide when and if to preserve them. I mean with that many bikes, what do you do to keep them from deteriorating whilst on display?

  • @CharlieFerer

    @CharlieFerer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ronald! That is a great question. I try to keep them as original as possible if going to be a collector bike and not ridden. With that said though many of the bikes I buy I try to find as original as possible. Most of the time these bikes need a complete rebuild down to the frame and at that point I would start from the frame up and Powdercoat the frame, rebuild the engine, rebuild suspension, do a nut/bolt refresh. I prefer to do a full motor rebuild now using Ryan at Factory Edge than try to do one years later because it is getting harder to find parts for these bikes. I will be dropping a video in the next couple weeks on how to prep a bike for long term or display. This will answer your question. All of my bikes are in a climate controlled environment which greatly helps keep the current look of the bikes. Worst thing you can do is keep it in the garage or somewhere where it gets extreme heat temperatures during the summer months etc. and that’s what deteriorates the bikes the fastest.

    In Arizona. Yes we have two classes we race in AVDRA and another vintage race series that does 81-83 called GP3 that is non disc brake open and I race a 83 Honda CR 480 and another class that is 84-86 Cale’s D1 which is front brake only class that many race the 500’s in (I race my 1986 CR 500).

    While l love any CR450-500 l'd rather see one that has era correct bars, levers and rims on it. That's just me.. I love all of your bikes but seeing them with the stock hardware really gets my juices flowing ! LOL !! 😆

    In this video I have two bikes that are all stock…with original bars, grips, rims, even original plastic and decals (1986 & 1989 CR 500). The ones I race and ride I do not use stock bars.

    Hi, I have a question. How much do you think a pretty nice and original looking 85 Cr 500 is worth? There is a hole in the bottom of the engine tho but I believe all the gears is working.

    Grenaded engine? $500 max. You'll spend a few thousand or many sleepless nights hunting for new cases, crank, etc needed to get it going again. You need to really punish a 500 to lose the engine. I shudder to think how the rest of the bike has neen treated.

    Hi Nathan! I have my 1986 CR 500 at Po Circuit right now and the team is building a jig so they can start selling these again. I think they will focus on the "works" look. I have been told the 1986 pipe fits the 1987 bike.

    Correct. Race class is 1981 - 1983 (drum brake) and 1984 - 1986 (front disc only class) so I prefer the 1986 over the 1984. Just like I prefer the 1983 over the 1981 for racing/collecting. Those are the best out of those race class years.

  • @CharlieFerer

    @CharlieFerer

    Жыл бұрын

    I would greatly disagree. The 1983 is redesigned and a better ergo bike for rider. The 1981 was one of the worst Honda builds and least reliable. The 1982 was a little better. Because of this Honda for 1983 redesigned everything and even the motor is now completely reliable and now has a better transmission with 5 speed. The front brake has a lot better stopping power with a dual leading shoe. They also improved the front forks besides the forks being a larger diameter. Shock has new linkage and more adjustable. Also cool for 1983 is the removable sub frame. The rear brake was redesigned for better pull in as well to the brake shoes. The 1983 is one of the most reliable air cooled bikes Honda manufactured. In my eyes you can not compare the 1981 and 1982 model even though they look alike. Remember for vintage racing this class is 1981-1983 and you want to be in the 1983. Someone. Told me the 1983 is lighter than the 1982 but when I ride both they both feel heavy lol.
