THE WORLD'S BIGGEST HIFI - MEYER SOUND, METALLICA O2 LONDON 2017

Ғылым және технология

WARNING: THERE IS NO BAND NOR MUSICAL CONTENT! The band name only even appears thrice.. I think,... this is about the Meyer loudspeaker technology and the bass power in particular. Adam Rayner does the full "How many woofers, mate?" system review - just like he's done for huge car systems and cinema rigs up to a million quid. But this is about perfect blank-canvas power and linearity on a massive scale. Meet the sound system used by the loudest band in the world, with footage from inside set up and sound check. Fourth part of the feature, here: www.talkstuff.net/index.php/i...

    I’ve been a touring drummer all my adult life and played every kind of conceivable venue. I’m always astonished at the talents of the people who put these audio and lighting systems together. From the stage POV I look up and am amazed at all the things hanging from the roof and I often wonder how somebody doesn’t get killed every day at these events. I see dudes and chicks scrambling through the catwalks a hundred feet in the air and flying on hoists and shit. Road crews don’t get the applause they deserve to pull this stuff off. Cheers to you guys. Thank you for what you do.

    I think it would be wise than assemblers indicate to users the brand and reference of the loudspeakers they install in their boxes. 80% of brands are assemblers including several major brands that formerly manufactured their own loudspeakers long time ago.... It would also be very interesting to know if the transducers are from manufacturers' catalogs like JBL or B&C or if these transducers are manufactured under specifications. And finally, indicate the time of availability.

    I was at this gig, Adam (actually, I was at both the London shows) and the sound was superb. The only criticism I had was the bass drums - live, on the night(s), they were muddy and not defined. Yet the sound-desk recording of the show had them clean and clear, all the attack "slap" and definition you'd want/expect. Seems odd that in the PA mix they were almost unrecognisable. Way too much low end bass on them, and no mid range attack. The rest of it though, the guitars, the bass, the rest of the drum kit, the vocals, was spot on.

    Where were you positioned? I have full sound intensity with frequency diagrams..but also know about Mick's fears of ant-phase suck-outs caused by the 'where ever we can' positioning of the infrasonic woofers. It'd be interesting, as that drum sound was epic....you have to have been in a spot with cancellation and Mick would actually want to know.

    Both nights I was level 1 seating, about half way up (great views), first night I was block 108 and night two was 103. As said, sound was awesome both nights (Big Mick has never let us down) but the bass drums, on both nights, were lost in a sea of low end. Loads of boom and bass, lots of thud, but the midrange "slap" definition just wasn't there. The only word I can use to describe them is "muddy".

  • @Presenterbloke

    @Presenterbloke

    6 жыл бұрын

    Now midrange.. 'slap' as in impact, I reckon would be to do with the limits to how much P.A. was possible to hang over the stage. This tour was limited for weight of flown P.A. and the sound guys were VEXED with the HUGE weight of the lighting-screens system. As we are a comment deep, only the keen will read this, so I can reveal an unpublished secret. Here is the opening bit of the audio design plot! "The new design is proposed because of a new lighting system that weighs too much and takes up too much space. NOT because the sound team decided to change things for fun" OUCH, they WERE ticked off! That may be the answer but will really upset Mick, he ain't pretending to care..it's his LIFE!

  • @ThrushCZX

    @ThrushCZX

    Big Mick has never let us fans down so I know it wasn't his (or anyone on his team's) "fault". Had I been at a different seating level the second night I might have noticed a difference perhaps. I saw in your video about the space restrictions Mick was talking about. The overall sound was great - bass that you felt rather than heard, sharp attacking mids that didn't pierce your temple, and clear highs. It was just those kicks, and I know it's not the mic'ing as the sound desk recording has all the attack on it. Either way, it didn't detract from the nights enjoyment, it's just something I picked up on, one because I'm a drummer so I'm listening out to hear Lars do his double bass, which I could still hear, and two because sound production, especially on this level, still fascinates me (if only I could do an internship with the metal overlord!!)

    Its weird having a "hifi" guy journaling an arena PA. There are so many engineering challenges being addressed that have nothing to do with traditional HIFI concerns. Just getting good coverage while minimizing cancellation becomes a monumental task when you are trying to control a sound field spanning several hundred feet instead of 10.

    Is it only me thinking Metallica is not so loud in 2018-2019? I Remember Rock am Ring 2012 - loudest concert ever. But BARCLAYCARD ARENA HAMBURG - indoor wasnt loud. But kopenhagen royal arena 2017 was loud again. ... Berlin 2019 - Sound was Great. But sometimes i ve heard the real drum louder than PA Sound ... but friends told me the Sound in the back was amazing and Loud. But front of Stage it was not so loud ... Good loud but not like ROCK am Ring 2012.. so what is the Problem. Or is it Europe loudness rules??

    Das hängt ganz vom Ort ab. In manchen Stadien ist die Soundqualität auch schon bei "niedriger" Lautstärke grenzwertig, da noch weiter aufzudrehen macht keinen Sinn. Ich gebe dir Recht, in Berlin war es nicht so laut, Wien auch nicht aber in Mannheim... Halleluja... das war wirklich brutal laut. Bei St. Anger hätte man gedacht, dass irgendwo ein T-Rex herumläuft. Auch war das Konzert in Wien 2014 extrem hoch von der Lautstärke, da gab es zahlreiche Beschwerden von Leuten die kilometerweit weg wohnten. Aber Lautstärke ist nicht alles. In der Regel ist Metallica nicht ohne, zählen ohnehin schon zu de lautesten Bands. Aber wenn es der Ort nicht zulässt, kann der beste Tontechniker auch nichts machen. Nur laut ist auch nicht immer schön. Falls du mal Motörhead warst, das war abartig laut aber von einem sauberen und klaren Klang weit entfernt. Metallica legt viel Wert auf einen differenzierten Sound, sowohl Lautstärke als auch Qualität und das hört man eindeutig. Man versteht jedes Wort, glasklar und es ist extrem druckvoll. Laut ist es ohnehin und mit diesen Aspekten, ist der Livesound bei Metallica brachial.

    110 - 125 dB is too loud for a music concert! Above that people's ears will be damaged permanently within minutes 🥹 Earlier days, concerts used to be that loud but nowadays, people are more aware about hearing health and safety as we already live in a noisy environment in cities and wear earphones / headphones most of the time from a young age. It's time to listen to quality over quantity maybe?! 🥲🥴
