The World According to Thiel

Recorded on January 17, 2020
Peter Thiel, the cofounder of PayPal and Palantir; early investor in Facebook, LinkedIn, and SpaceX; and the founder of the Thiel Fellowship, which encourages young people to drop out of college to start their own businesses, is interviewed live on stage in front of the members of the Mont Pelerin Society. This wide-ranging conversation covers globalization, the continuing and ever-growing threat from China and what the United States can and can’t do it about, what the rise of Bernie Sanders means for the future of US capitalism, the “derangement” (Thiel’s phrase) of Silicon Valley in the last decade, the scourge of political correctness on campuses and in society at large, and why Thiel thinks we should rethink the doctrine of American exceptionalism.

Simply brilliant! It is always refreshing to hear a clear thinker such as Mr. Thiel make arguments that are compatible with our capitalistic western model of living, opposing all the flat out nonsensical arguments presented from the left side of the political spectrum trying to revive historically failed concepts in a modern context.

College debt: put debt back on the colleges and universities that give students a bad education and go to a great college or university in your state where you won’t be in debt OR go to a technical college and go into some type of work where you can make tons of money! I went to medical school and have ended up with an average income, killing myself and the plumbing company owner lives in a mansion!

The maverick/eccentric quality of Thiel's mind/thought processes left Dr. Robinson in unfamiliar territory: no simple batting of familiar forms back and forth. I couldn't reconcile Thiel's classic liberalism and iconoclasm with PayPals conformity with the PC agenda, as manifested through the barring of 'conservative' commentators such as Stefan Molyneux.

I very much like Thiel, because he is a such deep thinker and always says fascinating things. Nevertheless, the reactions of the audience and the interviewer in particular are always uneasy because he seems to have problems with every contrarian statement Peter makes. This is unfortunate, it injects a bad taste to the whole session and one can see that Peter is struggling with this atmosphere. If you are calling an original thinker just to make a showcase about how crazy he is, then just invite an ordinary person and listen to their boring ideas. I remember the interviewer from his great sessions with Friedman.

I'm a lawyer who worked in venture capital in NYC. Thiel is a weird chap (occasionally deranged, politically) , a true contrarian - something which comprises of a lot of his identity. He's certainly a smart guy, though not tens of billions ($) of times smarter than his peers. In the VC world the random chance of opportunity is beyond our control. Like a lot of life. No disrespect, but he might not be quite the genius he feels himself to be. And his choice of presidents is crappy. :-) D.A., J.D., NYC

Super interesting. But even Peter is afraid to talk about what really matters - it is biology what drives history/culture. Average Western person in 1950 was way smarter, had healthier sexual/parental instincts, was overall more vital than an average Westener in 2020. We need to focus on reproduction and on immigration. Encourage healthy smart people to have kids at the optimal biological age (early twenties), and encourage parents to take good care of their kids, not dump them into state institutions at 6 weeks.

Just a suggestion ... your audience is not in the mood for the "polites" of social cocktail chatter about introductions, resumes, and how much the guest may or may not have enjoyed his cub scout little league baseball, how he learned to write and decided to publish a book which was #XX on the Book Club ... blah, blah ... I clicked to hear the guy say what he has to say, not to hob-nob vicariously with "society" and discuss backgrounds. In short: cut to the chase, and don't make us FFWD in the hopes of finding it. P.S. edit: you should know you have maybe 30 seconds in which to interest the viewer with real content, if that.
