Wow, he nailed this scene. No overacting, just proper emotion for a disturbing subject.
Mos Def deserved to be nominated just for that scene alone! SO POWERFUL AND INTROSPECTIVE!
Men like this don’t win Oscar’s but they win respect , no doubt, he pulled this dialogue from his own heart, that’s what made it real.

He puts the plant in the shadows so that it can live. Nice symbolism there
When he tells the story of little red riding hood, he is telling him that he knows that he was in the woods with the girl in the red.

This was great mainly because the red riding hood story, mixed with his little hint about what ivy likes, was his way of telling Kevin that he knew he was already looking for another child.

It's one of those, "watch it once, and never again" type of movies. It's pretty damn disturbing. I remember I bought it back in 2004 knowing nothing about it, and solely bought it bc of the cast alone. (Mos Def was huge back then) watched it once, and that was it. It's pretty fucked up.

Mighty Mos Def - It's simple mathematics
when he starts rocking on that chair he is so angry inside. Very bleak and dark film but a very good one. Wouldn't get made today. He only asks two specific questions, the rest of the conversation is about getting inside the pedo's head, and the cop does one thing in the situation that he should not do - show or speak anger as he does at the end, "i don't know why they keep letting freaks like you out" but I guess its grizzly stuff and bound to happen. also, amazing camera work in this scene it's always slowly zooming in and out. the "do you believe in fairy tales ?" is a real cop doing his job, he already noticed in an earlier scene that Kevin Bacon's character loves fairy tales.
I've always been in love with Mos Def
Walter is a sick man, but I wouldn't say he's a purely _evil_ man. "Henry," on the other hand, was. Then again, we never know any specific details about Walter's crimes, which only adds another uncomfortable layer of ambiguity.

What a good actor that guy is.
This scene with Mos Def's description was pretty disturbing and powerful at the same time. My exact sentiments about these freaks.
... once said that it was his way of protecting his heart. You know. And everything fell at place. I've been ashamed of different things in my life, for how I've been bullied or for what I've done, but my shoulders... oh, they've been pointing exactly like that. Like... like if... like if I've just been waiting, praying for a pair of wings to grow. A pair of wings that could release me from my shame and from my guilt. Sorry for blablabla:ing. Anyway, a truly great movie, this is!

The woodsman saved the little girl in the story after the wolf ate her. He's talking about that's not possible in the real world. He has to wait until a crime is committed and the little girl is killed to kill the wolf, and there's no bringing that little girl back.

@Bill Patrick Jones I think the screenwriter wrote that part that way on purpose. It's so common that when you find out a person is a sex offender you imagine the person molesting a child or brutally raping a woman. When in certain cases an adult could have been arrested for just dating a minor 1 or 2 years under the legal age of consent.

I think so. He is trying to shame Walter out of it by showing him he how close he is to being like those most evil guys. It's very telling that Mos says "some of those guys.." meaning he is not including Walter in the same ilk.
