I need an explanation why the sound chip blows the gameboy out of the water yet also produces some of the most hideous noises ive heard from any video game

@@TheMamaluigi300 it's not an emulation issue. Some games have really disgusting soundtracks. It's ok because this console is designed for being used just as a time killer. Do you really need sound in a card game? There's even no headphone jack in wonderswan. So you're forced to turn off sound in most cases. Developers knew it and this is the reason why some games sound terrible.

Oh dang, this was a pleasant surprise! I’ve always been curious about this platform. Really looking forward to your compilation of the Wonderswan Color, and maybe the Neo Geo Pocket Color down the line!

All the Bandai WonderSwan is was just a carbon copy of the Game Boy, and many of the games on that console were anime based games.

@Awhol Lotta Whoopass Why was WonderSwan released only in Japan? Was it because it acted pretty much the same as the Game Boy considering the fact that the WonderSwan was made by Gunpei Yokoi?

Jokes aside this library reminds me of the Saturn a lot. It’s a ton of niche titles that appear to be well serviced, visual novels and a ton of probably okay RPGs I can never play. The only difference might be less arcade titles. I saw Ghosts and Goblins and Crazy Climber but other than that

@@TheRealAmericanMan Not 'that' many JRPGs (for both WS and Saturn) actually, but you are right about VNs and "weird" genre mixtures. From the perspective of someone who can read Japanese to an extent, there honestly are just a few decent JRPGs, way fewer than SNES got for instance (and the latter platform has tons of fan-translations). Obviously, it makes no sense nowadays to release a region-locked console anymore (look at the sales of NDS or even Switch, it would be impossible in Japan alone).

@@mattia1026 Blame the MAME emulator and Mednafen has a similar CRC check function to the standard MAME. A CRC check analyzes a game ROM file for any changes to its data and size, so a fan translator or ROMhacker would have to edit filenames every time for every change, which is incredibly tedious. This is probably the reason why there haven't been many fan hack and translation patches being publicly provided for any game on various systems that are covered by Mednafen, such as Wonderswan (the topic of this page), Neo Geo, and PC Engine/PCE CD. These systems don't usually have many good alternative emulators, let alone those with good quality debuggers.

@@joaofernandes9756 I didn't know about that issue, thank you for raising awareness about it. As for the topic of ROMhacks/fantranslation though, as far as I remember Neo Geo AES has mostly arcade and/or gameplay-focused titles with not much text and almost all of them being published in the US. Concerning PCE/PCD, I've found lots of translations for both systems. I've got most Wonderswan games with translations already patched on my phone to play them on the go.

Aside from the fact that a lot of examples here are just plain bad sound emulation - haven't played a lot of these but a lot like Rockman and Forte and Vaitz Blade are audibly missing sound channels - it's moreso that a lot of developers didn't properly take advantage of the soundchip.

It looks pretty crappy. A lot of games have little action, and look like they were designed for a pre iPad tablet not designed for gaming. The graphics are outdated, the sound sucks, and the controls look like they would be terrible with an awkward D pad.

@@bubbythebear6891 Um, you do realize this system was designed by the guy who made the Game Boy, with pretty similar specs to the Game Boy, right? Like, it came out in 1999 as a black and white handheld, of course the graphics are outdated and the sound sucks. Didn't exactly have PS5 hardware back then. I actually own a Wonderswan and the d-pads are similar to those on the Joycon controllers, but looser.
