Lyrics:
I recorded your heartbeat. It’s 133.
The tempo’s in my blood now.
I hum it when I’m lonely.
I recorded your heartbeat,
and I stared at your knees.
I wondered which one’s gonna be
the bad one in your thirties.
Then, I drove you home
listening to “God Only Knows,”
when all that I know is…
your name, your name, your name, your name’s
the only one I like.
I’m half awake caught in the way
you breathe at night.
I’m low, and I’m scared, but I’m on your side.
Your name, your name, your name, your name’s
the only one I like.
I found glass in the garden-
dug it up with my thumb.
I won’t let you cut your feet
when you learn to run;
but you learned to say “moon,”
so we waved from your room.
You called to it, like it might come to you.
I watched you sitting silently,
staring at your door,
in all your little loneliness.
I came in quiet and slept on your floor.
The green light from your smoke alarm
flickers off and on,
like an alien abduction,
like a distant dawn.
I’ve never been so afraid of failing at anything,
and I’m glad that you don’t know how bad it is.
I’m gonna go, start to dig, plant the seeds, keep the birds away.
Gonna grow you a place that’s safer than this.

I've already listened to this song so many times and I can't stop crying. I remember the first time I heard Melrose Diner in 2010 and TWY instantly became my favorite band. Every release has related helped me through different stages of life. This song though.... it hit me somewhere special. I have two little girls, one with congenital heart disease and she'll be having surgery soon and this song is going to be carrying me through. Thank you, TWY.

You know that's really hard to hear about your daughter and i hope she improves. I despise this band and this song is diabilical in its shamelessness, to put your kid in the video like this, to film the mother, etc. - is utterly sick. This man is sick - He has no ideas in his music or in his art - the video is an idea void. It's one thing to write about your kid in a comment thread, it's another to put the poor thing in a video featuring her. It's not like she has any say in the matter. The guy is a whole new level of moron - and the music sucks.

I don’t think many people will see this and that’s ok but whenever I hear the song I think of Dan’s lyrics from almost ten years ago “Jesus Christ, I’m 26, all the people I graduated with all have kids, all have wives, all have people who care if they come home at night, well Jesus Christ, did I fuck up?” And now hearing this song at around the same age he was when he wrote those lyrics almost a decade ago and it gives me so much hope. I stopped listening to TWY after The Greatest Generation for no particular reason, but I came back around with this album and I couldn’t be happier that I did. Much love to all of these guys

I've never found a lyricist I connect with more than Soupy. Maybe it is because we are the exact same sage (17 Jan 1986), but it seems that wherever I am at in my life, he too is in that place and able to explain it so perfectly. One of the greatest lyricists our scene has ever produced.

I'm almost 30 years old with a couple kids, and these dudes have been there every step of the way, pumping out song after song I can find some way to relate to. I love you, the best Band forever 💙

Still waiting for TWY to surprise me and release a song I don’t immediately love. Apparently today’s not the day, cause this is yet another banger.

A little flying hank drawn up in the sky would have been incredible for this but either way, incredible song. This album is going to be life changing

This song hits me pretty hard. Father of a boy that was born in the pandemic. I have almost divorced from my wife getting trough the first year... We had the hard talks, are trying to build a life where he can flourish, be happy and most importantly: have peace. We both had troubled homes, now it's our turn to break the cycle by going, digging, planting the seeds and keeping the birds away. Thank you Dan, thank you TWY.

Old punk father of 2 young boys and I came back to TWY recently. This song caught me off guard and makes me ugly cry every time. I tell my boys I'm on their side all the time and I don't know if I have ever meant anything more. Hearing those lyrics just makes me so happy for your kids.

i think if my dad were still here for me to show him this song, he would play it on repeat every day. it really reminds me of him. this will always be one of my favorite bands of all time. so much genuine pain and love and emotion in everything they write. they hit like absolutely nothing else.

These songs are already getting stuck in my head. I’ve been singing “your name your name your name your name” and “Madelyn I don’t think that I’ll see you again” over and over in my head. Summer clothes too love this band. Is threadbare gonna be on this new album too?
