Lyrics:
Raining in Kyoto, it’s flooding the streets. I’m nursing a coffee from a vending machine.
Saw the god of rice and a fox with a key. Woke up blind with a headache, grinding my teeth.
Confused and alone, been taking pills to sleep. They soften your absence but they don’t let me dream.
Raining in Kyoto. My breath turns into steam. I bought you a candle, not even sure what it means, but I cursed at the matches, and drown in my grief. An older man stood closeby and smiled at me. I rung the bell like he did and I told you I’m sorry. A makeshift funeral. I tried setting you free.
You’re half asleep,
I bought you a radio to drown out the machines.
Hospital light,
you asked about the weather, wished that they’d let you outside.
Raining in Kyoto. I’m starting to shake. They’ll hold your service tomorrow. I’m an ocean away.
Reached into my pocket, found a small paper crane. It’s been over a year now. April fades into May and I’ve barely stopped moving, I’ve been so fucking afraid; too much of a coward to even visit your grave.
You’re half awake,
I bought you a radio to play the blues away.
With my hand to hold,
you asked about the weather, wish they’d let you die at home.
Goodnight
Goodnight
Goodbye

My parents didn't sign a permission slip for this feel trip.
His voice.....just damn. A lot of depth, you feel like he means every word. Definitely have to appreciate that in a vocalist

Bold claim here but to me he's the new Chester from LP
Something that's interesting is that TWY is a band with pop punk roots, a genre that has a trope about escaping your hometown. The album's name, Sister Cities, and the whole cinematography of this video which juxtaposes Philadelphia with various cities in Japan (Kyoto and Nara definitely, possibly Tokyo) is a nice display of the human condition... it expresses that, despite where you're from, we're all much more alike than we might think. Also, in an answer to that aforementioned pop punk trope, the grass isn''t always greener on the other side. Well anyway, that's just my interpretation of the video, and all that said, if you have the chance to explore some of the world, take it. No experience will ever broaden your horizon more than traveling and experiencing foreign cultures.

Yes! People need to realize the world is bigger than their backyard. I was stationed in Japan while in the Navy and the similarities were astounding, but also night and day to living in America.
Think about all of the different lives everyone is living. These shots are absolute beautiful. The transition from Kyoto to Philly is rad. The whole things rad.

When this album dropped it came at one of the hardest points of my life. I had to listen to it hearing Pyramids of Salt. Needless to say, The Wonder Years saved me from a dark time. I instantly bought a concert ticket here in Texas when they went to the Gas Monkey Bar 'N Grill, and it was the most liberating night of my entire life. Thank you Soupy, thank all of you for what you do and your love and care for the fans.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video. I'm from southeast PA. While I was in the military I spent a lot of time in South Korea. I had a couple of friends and family members die while overseas and I'm bad at expressing and dealing with emotions so I was both literally and figuratively an ocean away. This is an overly long and earnest youtube comment Also the shot of the deer lowering its head and the woman bowing in Nara makes me smile every time
Every single time I listen to this, it hits me as hard as the first. One of my favorite songs that I need to hear in order to feel, when my world goes numb. Thank you TWY.

Wow I literally just made a similar comment. I listen to this when I need to remember.
There is something so powerful about this song. Everytime I hear the chorus it hits me like a brick. "You're half asleep, and I bought you a radio to drown out the machines". This is like next level. It just comes to show, that grief and sadness is not just mellow and pity. It's anger and frustration. Over the world, and over ourselfes.
No one makes me as proud to live in Philly as this band I swear. This is so beautiful.

Natalie R I love the eagles fan shoutout, and I’m a Dallas fan. TWY are the only reason I’m not pissed they won the Super Bowl. Congrats :D
Does this video make anyone else still cry 4 years later?? My dad died 2 years ago and I still watch this so I can remind myself I’m not alone even when I isolate myself. It reminds me of the human condition: we’re all just people trying to live, connect, find our meaning. We all feel pain, love, hope, grief. TWY will always be my favorite band because of what they make me feel in as little as a 4 minute song.

I know this is an old comment, but I relate man I really do. My grandma just got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer after being in icu for the last couple months and I can't even listen to this song without bursting into tears. It's nice knowing that, no matter how sad, there's people out there who understand

I haven't seen any other video that fully completes the connection we must feel to every other soul on the planet. It shows people in world's away who couldn't be less different.

I still cry 5 years later. Lost my grandma in February 2019. Due to going to college at the time and struggling to hold my emotions in, I had a hard time seeing her or calling her because I didn't want her to worry about me when she was going through so much hardship. The last time I ever saw her, I could barely look at her because I didn't want to upset her with my grief for her even though she hadn't yet left. While I wasn't in a band touring, I still inadvertently put myself "an ocean away" from her, even her service didn't feel real to me. As much as it was a hard time for me, it's probably the only period in my life I'd redo if I could. I wish I could've seen her more and been there for her more. This song and dismantling summer really put me back to that place which I sometimes need to go because it's the closest thing to having her back.
The Wonder Years are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I saw them friday without knowing almost any of their music and i had a blast. Looked up some of their songs when i got home, this one included because of how emotional Dan got explaining the song's backstory before they performed it
The wonder years is the greatest band of the 21st century. Prove me wrong.
I lived in japan for 2 years. It truly is one of the most wonderful places in the world. The people are respectful and kind, not always, but significantly more than anywhere I've lived in the U.S. I plan to move back soon, just gotta get this degree. Anyways, TWY, keep swinging, mates. You will always resonate with me.

Christian Caldwell Japan is my true home as well, mate. Moving back there in September; I just can’t stay away. Aaron West’s EP was the soundtrack to my trip to Kyoto, and then this song came along. So perfect.

How expensive is it to live there in comparison?
@NanomachineExE
3 жыл бұрын
@@dabirl6763 It depends, if you live in the city it can be rather expensive. That said it's pretty reasonable if you work full time.
I've only heard selected tracks from the band, but this song struck a chord with me immediately when I heard it last year. I lost my grandfather tonight and came looking for this again. He was a missionary who worked across the world and was a man of remarkable passion and kindness. Even though I have so much doubt in my life and don't feel like I have his same faith, I have learned there is always regret in losing the people we love and who matter most. It always leads to pain and questions of what we could have done as the end came, but I remember everything I did say and that we did share. That is eternal.
Didn't think I could like this song even more, but here we are
The line “wished they let you die at home” always hits super hard. My grandma passed away in the hospital shortly after slipping into a coma. I know she would have rather been at home, and I wish I had been there for her final moments. I can’t help but think of her every time I hear this song, or really any song off this album.
Love this video, oddly liberating

This is the song that gave strength during my Japan trip. My aunt died of dancer 2019 during it, I couldn´t visit her funeral. She was loved and her spirit lives through all my travels. Much love to all of you.
it's about his grandfather passing away. You can feel his pain through your whole being. haunting beautiful song
I listened to this song a lot when my grandfather died around a year and half ago. He was the first person significant to me that I’ve lost so far in my life. I’m younger so I know there’ll be more losses, but this song being about Dan’s loss of his grandfather really made me feel understood and connected with. Now I can’t hear it without thinking of my grandpa but it’s an incredible song and I’m thankful I have it to remember him.
in love with this video, it makes me feel so nostalgic bc l was in japan when the album came out and this song brings me right back. beautifully shot!!
i am crying, this was so beautiful. Love you guys❤
Constant vibrating chills all throughout the video. It makes me so pumped and emotional, it’s a wonderful blend of feelings.
First time watching this video and all of the sudden I'm in tears. Its a perfect mix of music and images, just hit me hard!
That “Goodnight goodnight goodbye” always gets me
Favorite song off the album, happy to see that they made a video for it

I saw this band a few years ago days after a friend died. This song makes me cry every time.
Can we just take a second to appreciate how good this band is
Really enjoyed this video. Just the way that it flows and everything is super cool.

gtreat song, really emotional . (yes, souls can be oceans away, however close they might seem to be)
My grandma just died a few weeks ago, and I've just been coming home after work every day to listen to this and Dismantling Summer on repeat while crying on my couch. I also wasn't able to make it to her funeral.
Hearing this song hits me in the goosebumps everytime!
It's just my favorite song from my favorite album
This track and video are both amazing
This video deserves more views than it does... why are so many ppl sleeping on this song and video. ITS SO GOOD
I live in Kyoto now, it’s awesome to see places I walk everyday.
This video is the most succinct demonstration of just how similar we all are as people. Despite our numerous differences, there are things that we all experience. We're just people. It's just life. Whether you're in Japan or the US.
These are wonderous years with great music from wonderful beards to erase all fears ❤️🌊
I needed this. I don't know it, but I did.
Granted the song’s lyrics and theme were never intended, who would have thought that this song (even the video) is eerily relatable to everything we have gone through this year?
I need to see you live! New album was amazing, which means a lot since all bands i like disappointed me with new released! :D
