The Women of Zack Snyder's Filmography

Фильм және анимация

This video essay examines the characterisation and stories of women characters across Zack Snyder's filmography. The films being analysed are the ones he has directed, and not the films where he is credited as a producer without also directing.

It's so annoying when people discredit Sucker Punch being a feminist movie just because the girls wear skimpy clothes. Such a shallow statement. Especially when it portrays feminism and freedom from abuse way better than any other regular action/fantasy movie, and in such a unique and visually striking way, too. Sucker Punch will never stop being one of my favorite movies ever and I need more movies like it, especially if it has those amazing Snyder-esque action sequences haha

It's not binary; a woman can dress skimpy and still be feminine and strong. Even the women behind the scenes of (Zack Snyder's) Justice League said that they LOVED wearing the outfits for the Amazon warriors (i.e.: Brooke Ence), but even back in 2017, pseudo-feminists (I'm talking the ones that get easily offended over tiny shit like this) still expressed their outrage. About a couple years after that, the women took to social media to basically tell them to fuck off because they loved working with Snyder and felt empowered doing so.

I was kinda one of them. I mean, I remember loving it and thinking it was empowering but everybody kept saying that the movie is just pandering and I (partly being young and haven't really developed nuanced understanding on feminism and film theory) believed them. Seeing the difference between how Snyder handled women in Justice League (as opposed to other guy) opened my eyes to Snyder's value on women. Nice to hear that my gut instinct was right. I definitely need to rewatch Sucker Punch!

A lot of times in culture and media we see the male leads becoming the most ‘vulnerable’ when they are in love with a female character, implying that females caring nature is a weakness. Zack on the other hand makes it so that when he has male leads, they are the strongest with a women at their side and embraces caring and motherly nature.

Also, this might be a honorable mention since she's only in the opening of the movie, but if you look in more detail the character of Martha Wayne in the comics, visually, she really does strike the look of Lauren Cohan

I've been defending Sucker Punch for years, I think it's a lot deeper than most people give it credit for. It's easy for people to claim that it's sexist just because it shows its female characters in skimpy clothes but the whole point is that the characters are in control of their own bodies and sexuality. Most people don't even join the dots and realise what is going on in the "real world" when Baby Doll is "dancing". How the studio ever thought it should be a PG-13 I'll never understand.

Zack showed the strength, wisdom, empathy, and courage of the Amazons in that scene alone. When Steppenwolf escapes, he left because he knew he wouldn't be able to fight them yet. The women in Zack Synder's films have an impact compared to other superhero/comic book movies. And don't do the typically song-and-dance of only being physically strong. I would also like to add that he displays males who care, are emotional, and aren't just reduced to pretending nothing hurts them. As well as things like having Clark call/visit his mom in Batman VS Superman, showing Bruce in BVS drowning himself in pills and alcohol, having Arthur sympathize with Victor's loss, and having Barry be visibly distraught when his dad told him to stop visiting him is showing how men can be emotionally vulnerable as well. One thing I have always appreciated about Snyder's films is that he embraces unapologetic masculinity and femininity. His male and female characters are different as men and women naturally are, but they are all complex, valuable and impactful as characters. He clearly has a grasp on how to capture masculine heroism, but what goes unappreciated in the way that he handles the use of women in his stories is that he doesn't fall into the creative trap of making the typical feminist "strong independent women" stereotype which usually just means "strip them of their femininity and make them exactly like the men." Instead he embraces and understands the value and importance of feminine heroism and makes that an equally influential driving force in his marratives, because although it may sometimes be expressed in different ways, both men and women bring something powerfully unique to the table, a yin to ther's yang, both equally as indispensable, beautiful and powerful as the other in their own way.

Snyder is well-read in the ways of Joseph Campbell, and has often expressed his love of Campbell's work. Campbell understood that both men and women go on Hero's Journeys. The women are strong, but not ridiculously so.

If anything, it's helpful to locate the sources of these ridiculous and harmful ideas so more people can see that they should stay away from such anti-reality, divisive ideologies. Like K.T. observed, leftists seek to make art what they want it to be, rather than how it exists. Rather than express the beautiful fact that women and men are not the same, but instead have their own unique and special differences that can be appreciated by both sexes, they instead emphasize "equality" and seek to make women second-rate men, de-valuing the importance of femininity in the process. While I agree saying things like "sjws and leftists idiots" is unnecessary and unhelpful, it needs to be understood that it is ultimately leftism (or the people pushing it) that is hindering real engagement and discussion by labeling those who disagree with them "racist," "bigots," and so on.

The closed-mindedness of when the movie Sucker Punch came out was astonishing. I grew up in a household of Women/Moms, and one Man most of my life. Respectfulness and listening to them were taught to me. How to talk to women and being able to make sure they are heard. People say "it's not that hard" but yet articles and stories are posted, it seems every day, that women are mistreated by men and their "power" of being in control of them. When Zack Snyder released the movie into theaters, I had to see it. Saw it and was just amazed to see this group of women fighting and kicking butt, and then slowly I started to see the message Zack was pushing behind the story each time I had watched it. It could be compared and reflect the history of women fighting to be free when being controlled by a really terrible man. The only person these women could turn to was Dr. Gorski, a female by the way who is the one who is responsible for these women and to treat them. When things finally unfold at the end of the movie, Blue is then caught and then taken away which we can only assume to jail or to be punished. The Narrator is also not even Babydoll, it's Sweetpea which I also did not realize until many watches later. I really appreciate Zacks movies he makes from all perspectives of filmmaking. They are entertaining and deep.

The person we've been following is not the one narrating, the narrator is the person who helped her escape and saved her.

Also, I think why Superman said Martha instead of "mom" or "mother" is perhaps he didn't want his mother's connection to him being revealed (which was revealed anyway) and that he also thought that saying something specific as Martha rather than the vague "mom/mother" is more logical, especially to someone like Batman.

The name of his mother was the perfect trigger since one of batman's weaknesses is his parents. And we see in the same movie just how much he misses them and I would like to think that when he hears the name of his mother he also thinks about what she would think about his current actions and that's also another thought that adds to the mess in his head and when he finally realises all of this, in an attempt to try and redeem himself, he insists to be the one who ends up saving Martha.

With all that's said about how Joss Whedon is such a champion of women and female characters....you look more closely at what he's done over the course of his career and it becomes evident that he was only doing the bare minimum of even wanting to seem progressive. Couple that with the stories on set and how he goes about representing his characters on screen.....Joss doesn't hold a candle to how Zack goes about representing his female characters or his actors, and in a current "me too" world, I'm surprised Zack's work hasn't seen a larger resurgence overall. People complain about lack of representation of strong female characters in media, but they never go watch films that actually have them. Annihilation is another great film, gone by the wayside as the GA doesn't care about thoughtful Sci-Fi. They say always vote with your wallets. Unfortunately not enough people take that idea to heart.

I love how Snyder's films embreces it's themes unapologetically. World is a dark place and he is not afraid to show it. Even if it is a world of fantasy. He doesn't shy away from making his chracters too complicated. His chracters make questionable choices and yet we can't help but sympathize with them. That's mark of good director. I thought I was the only one who noticed how well women are valued in Zack's films. I mean...it's pretty obvious, but still, somethimes, that kind of thing seems to be ignored or unseen by everyone. You know, I love the Snyders. Not only Zack, but his wife too. She seems to be his worlds and, beyond a great wife and supporter, a source of inspiration. She's his world, just as Lois is Superman's world. And speaking of Superman, I'd like to share with everyone here how much I felt my own mother personificated by Martha Kent. Well, part of it is because I see myself in Superman and because he's my inspiration to be a better person every day, but Martha is the example of a true mother. My mother is an example of a true mother as well. And that scene, in Batman vs Superman where the two of them speak in the farm, where she says to him that he should be a symbol of hope, a hero, a savior or none of that because he doesn't owe nothing to anyone is were I felt my own mother the most in her. Because that's the kind of thing a true mother would say to her own son, specially if their son is as responsible, kind and altruist as Superman. I have no doubt my mom sees me as a Superman, in essence. I'm always ready to put others above myself, and she knows how much I want to help others when they're in need. That's why I held my mom's hand and almost cried when we saw that scene of BvS together. Zack Snyder is a true director and a wonderful person, that really knows not only to direct, but to value his characters and make them the most realistic as possible.

It's incredibly offensive when people (often but not always men) try to tell me that film is sexist when it's NOT, and then a lot of those people will also be incredibly rude to me when I make videos about other films and point out that they're sexist (Stardust!!!) or racist or perpetuating some other type of 'ism. They try to make it out like I'm too sensitive or that I don't have a sense of humour. Nope. 😌

@@LadyJenevia I think people automatically assume that women portrayed in skimpy outfits when written by a man, automatically means its sexist. But in my opinion, seeing how sweet pea is dressed more conservatively when she leaves, we're led to believe that those outfits were skimpy because they were underneath the male gaze, even in the fighting fantasies babydoll and the others are still technically on stage preforming, it's not until they're free that we see different costume design. But that's just me, I think when you really start analyzing suckerpunch you see that a lot of the surface "sexism" people see, is legitimately put there as a commentary on misogyny like you said. I hope you end up doing the deep dive on this film, I'd absolutely love to hear fuller thoughts on it all

People want the credit of seeming like they support women and they want to believe they're not part of the problem but then they refuse to do any of the work to actually THINK about the nuance of these stories and the visual presentation of them. The first dream layer more or less shows an ensemble of women that have been forced into s*x work. They dress up in all kinds of outfits to evoke a certain image/fantasy for men and those men are all consistently presented as being BAD. I don't think the story is subtle and yet I and others who love the film get hassled by people who claim we're wrong when they're the ones that missed the points the film has made. 😒

I felt that the way the Amazons and Wonder Woman were depicted in Whedon's cut seemed a little objectified and I'm not talking about their clothing. The camera angles used on Gal Gadot and cutting the line about the Amazons fearing nothing, seemed to take away their power. Wonder Woman was so much more badass in the Synder Cut. She seemed to be treated like a very valuable member of the team and not just something for Aquaman and Flash to ogle at.

I am a 49 y.o. male, 25 years in US Military service, multiple combat tours, former NCO and retired as an Officer. I will tell you from personal experience, most men, real men, know that strong women, the kind you described, not necessarily physically strong, but 'strong'... in character, integrity, bravery, those are respected. I want strong women around me, always. My wife is the strongest woman I know and we have been married for 20 years and have 4 children. I don't think I would have survived this long in life without her. I may have been the one who deployed into combat, but without her, I don't I wouldn't have survived long after coming home. This idea that movies fail because of horrible men who hate strong women is false. Men want strong women, it is the people who write their characters, how they present them. So many strong female leads are beloved by men! If you make a crappy movie with a poorly written character, male or female, that movie is most likely going to fail, and fail hard. Another point that must be made about movies these days that many in the industry are blaming men for failing are movies that are retreads of old franchises where they just replace the male character with a female. Those generally don't work!!! People usually hate retreads no matter what the content and hate 'retcons' of existing stories, universes and worlds. As a young man, I thought Ripley was the most bad-ass women I had ever seen in a Movie! I can't count the women leads I love, no only in action movies, but dramas, romantic comedies, any genre really. The success or failure of a character in any presentation is the writing, directing, the actor/actress themselves, the story they are in, the development of that character, if it makes sense? In addition, the term MarySue, I have no idea where it came from referring to a character that gained their powers with no apparent reason why/how or if not earned... Men hate male characters that don't earn their powers either, those characters are boring and I can't stand them. My absolute favorite female character of all time is Arya Stark in Game of Thrones and to be perfectly honest, most of my favorite characters are strong women. But also, my definition of what makes a strong women is maybe not what people generally think of when they think of strong men, I don't mean 'strong' in just the physical sense. From my time in the military, you had to not only be strong physically, but mentally, emotionally and morally. Men and women have more in common strengths then they do in differences, those that don't understand that and try to force the strengths of one gender onto another, are set-up to fail. There are exceptions, but to make them work, you must write them well, present them well, make a compelling character and a compelling story, not try to make a statement just for statements sake, people are not stupid. First and foremost, a strong women does not yell from the rooftops, "I am a strong woman", that's not how it works, as with men, don't tell me how badass you are, that means nothing. I enjoyed this video very much, thank you for making it. Sorry for the wall of text.
