‘The Witcher’ Star Henry Cavill On Why He HAD to Play Monster Hunter Geralt | Rotten Tomatoes

Фильм және анимация

One of Netflix’s most hotly anticipated titles ever, ‘The Witcher,’ finally arrives on the streaming service this December - and just like fans of the video game and book series, we couldn’t wait to find out what the new show had in store. Ahead of the series’ release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez sat down with star Henry Cavill, who told us why he felt compelled - and campaigned - to take on the title role, and why his character has more depth than some may think at first. Plus, we chatted with actresses Freya Allan (Ciri) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), and showrunner Lauren Schmidt, who revealed how a Christopher Nolan movie inspired her to switch up some timelines and expand certain roles.

This is why it's always important for an actor to really WANT a role. In every scene, you can see how Henry gives everything he's got. So much passion and skill shinning through everything he does, and that's the main reason this show is so great. Henry Cavill alone keeps me invested to be honest. I also liked the stories from Yen & Cirri's point of view. They got some good actresses! But I thought things got a little drawn out at times. I know they are trying to push them more, and showcase women in the story, but I think Geralt was the character that kept things interesting. Just my opinion of course

@@qoki2244 Yeah, but the issue with that is...I mean, it's based on the books. You can only really show Geralt doing what he does. And the main plot largely revolves around Ciri. Geralt is one of the main protagonists, but it's not really 'his' story, and Yennefer has just as much a stake in it as he does. So I think it was important they shared the perspectives in the way they did, or when they get to adapting Blood of Elves, you might not be as familiar as you should be with the trio as a whole.

I had no expectations for this show. When I saw the trailers I was only worried it would be too pompous. And it suprised me in a positive way: Henry Cavill is Geralt, he understood the character perfectly. I very much liked Yennefer, I am waiting for the development of Ciri’s storyline. Not to mention, „the White Flame” is just like I imagined him when I read the books, same about Tissaia. Vilgefortz is immaculately handsome as he sholud be. Of course, the show is not what the books are, it can’t be. But I liked the way this universe was presented, even if driads were not green, elves were not beautiful, the golden dragon was nothing like GOT dragons and the authors caused an actual chaos with the story’s timeline.

The story telling timelines switch is brilliant! It accomplishes two things imo: - 1st is goes few times over some important characters and events (from different angles of course) so that you remember and understand in depth not just who is who, but also their motivation and see their own character development. Imho that was missing in Game of Thrones for example. In GoT sooo many things happened and characters entered and exited (usually dead) the story that you could hardly keep track of everyone, and eventually you had to discover that someone you watched for couple of minutes two seasons ago is actually important now (probably for couple of minutes again until he/she dies). - 2nd is really gives power to that magical world and especially to that feeling of destiny that the story revolves around (that could otherwise be boring)

To The Witcher's whole team and Netflix: PLEASE listen to your audience and their comments rather than the critics. What is extremely frustrating is not necessarily that the critics did not like the show. It is that in most cases, by reading their reviews, you can tell they have probably not watched it/given it a chance. It feels like they're just trying to go against the grain, as if liking the show would be too "mainstream" and therefore "diminishing" ... As an example, I see a lot of comparison with GoT in the critics reviews which was a show telling the story of the political agendas of all characters and the political conflicts they have in a world in which magic is also present. Very different from the Witcher in which the fantasy and magic are the core focus of the story. Comparing them is even more irrelevant than comparing Breaking Bad and Narcos. Giving a negative opinion on a show is totally fine, but I expect real professionalism from these critics that are paid for it and when I read "I couldn't go through the first episode OMG terrible wig Henry lol" from such said professionals, I genuinely struggle to see why I would use their inputs on other shows to decide if it's worth watching or not. (PS: Only decent professional review I've found so far was from Erik Kain from Forbes. The rest I've managed to read was total garbage)

This is the best interview about the show! She’s such a great interviewer asking the right questions. I just watched a bunch of awkward ones and the interviewers had no idea of what they were talking about

The second Cavill, as Geralt, said, "But, these views", in that sarcastic deadpan voice, I was like: Yep, that's a man who knows Geralt of Rivia. Born to play, as they say.

If you rate a show pretty low because you have an opinion on the story you have no idea about, or the characters or anything, why even bother reviewing it? It's like calling an electrician to build you a rocket. One of the requirements for the job would be: "HAVE YOU EVER BUILT A ROCKET?". Same goes here. When they say that Geralt is a mutant, the first thing that comes to a critics mind is X Men. And they probably kept waiting for him to show his special powers. Which he didn't - per se. There are a lot of things in the show that weren't said. For example: here's Geralt and that's about it. There's no origin story, he's just there. Stuff like that. People nowadays love to be held by hand while the story unfolds, directed even if you will. And it doesn't do that here. What's more, the timelines skip from one to another to the third. A lot of material that would raise an eyebrow of a critic not familiar with the subject. While on the other hand, pretty much everyone that has a console or a PC has tried the game at some point in their life, young or old. In all honesty, I don't see the need for critics at all. They rate movies and shows. And do so pretty poorly. The general sense of audience is more often than not quite a bit different than an opinion of the critic(s). Which brings is to another question, are they, perhaps, paid to give a good/bad review? I mean, we live in a world where everything and everyone can be bought. Could we seriously believe that they could be unbiased towards a movie someone slipped them an envelope to give a good/bad review for? In all seriousness, I doubt it.

@@zer0bre Not really, I haven't played the games or read the books, so I'm viewing the show like a critic would. And honestly, it's not doing a good job it's character definition. I had to look up some more background online and then it made more sense/made me appreciate them more. I don't think the show is that bad, but it is definitely flawed. It does not work that well on it's own, and that's what the critics see. That people like to be directed thing isn't really true, they are tons of critically acclaimed movies with non linear timelines. Finally, it's litterally impossible for a critic to go read the books and play the games and do whatever you have done for each movies when you have to review several movies a week.

Personally I liked the split timelines thing. It was only slightly confusing at first. Once they showed the painting of young Foltest and his sister, and then showed the actual children in the same episode, I understood what was going on.
