Well half of my favorite franchises are going down in flames (Resident Evil and Zelda come to mind), the other half have been long dead because they were so niche. Even Project Zero is only hanging on by a thread. Having been granted two ports on the Switch, but not seen a new installment for 8 years.

"Henry was difficult to work with" because he actually knew the story and lore. He played the games. He read the books. He was an actual fan. Meanwhile, the writers and producers didn't and actually made fun of the books. Henry was difficult to work with because he was trying to make "the Witcher" TV show while they were trying to make crap and slap the "witcher" label on it.

@@st.lucient4755 Yea, you just got to read between the lines and analyze what's put on screen. Facts: Henry Cavil carries the show, every scene not involving Henry is usually just butchering the Lore and ruining side characters. Apparently, the writers complained that Henry would show up on set and give them a new script because theirs was so bad. One writer who no longer works on the show even said the rest of the writing team are not fans of the source material. It definitely looks like the showrunner herself calls herself a Witcher fan but from how she's portrayed major characters, she sure doesn't respect source material. Henry is basically the only reason this show got off the ground and with him leaving it's going to turn into a dumpster fire, I'd honestly be amazed if it didn't. Reason for him leaving? No doubt animosity from both sides. Henry wanting to make a faithful adaptation and the Writers and Showrunner wanting to ruin it. Hell, look at how bad the prequel crap was, Blood Origin.

Yeah, people thought that it's because he wanted to be a Super-Man again and that's why he turned down being Geralt in the next season but the thing is, Super-Man wasn't even 100% confirmed to be made and even further, it wasn't confirmed that Henry would be playing him again. I don't think Henry would leave the show for such uncertain role. It's not what a professional like him would do. It was evident that he left the show because it sucked. what has ruined it is the writers not staying true to the source material negating the game , shoving diversity into it ( just for refence the guy who wrote the books was a white polish guy) so the premise of the books were based on polish medievil type lore .. even the games has triss as a couldnt get any whiter white woman and fringila was never black .. then i dont even remember radovic being gay like ever in the books or the game !! and while Dandelion ( jaskier ) is a bit of a party boy he never kissed radovic near the cabin in the books or was it ever mentioned in the books or games he liked both men and woman .. pure pandering to different groups !! Im not surprised cavil has told them to f..k off .. 100% there are alot of dull i guess for the lack of a better word boring parts in the books which wouldnt make for great TV but they have made alot of BS up yet ruined other parts by not explaining!!

They tried to explain it with this medallion that Ciri talks to, calling Geralt to help her but it still didn't make sense. It's not like Geralt could teleport to her because of that. In the books it was much better explained because Ciri knew that Geralt was not far from Gors Velen where she stayed with Yennefer so she asked that boy that was guiding her across the city, how to get to where Geralt is. The boy then tells her how to get to that village where Geralt had some job. Then she left Gors Velen and got to him. In the show they just didn't care about setting it up, they made Geralt appear because they thought that it would look cool. In the past season it also was present, especially when Geralt finds Yen and Ciri right in time before they're slaughtered by Cintrian soldiers. The show writers just don't care about logic, they just like to teleport characters whenever they need them in a certain scene.

Ciri being a snot nosed, spoiled princess that lashes out against authority and generally being a pain in the ass for everyone around her (with the exception of Dandelion and Triss tbh) is actually very faithful to the books. Thing being that book Ciri is quite a bit younger. I mean I get why they aged her up, given how she's basically seen as a brood mare by every faction after her. But in the series no character has room to develop or grow, so it just feels like they're repeating the same character beats over and over again. This season so far has been the closest they've gotten to the books... not faithful mind you, but closest.

I have read the books almost 20 years ago, back when I was in middle school. I loved them so much that I kept saving my pocket money to go to the book store and buy the next book in the series. Since then I've read them multiple times and they carried me through some tough times, like when I spent almost 2 months in a hospital due to an illness. I've played the games multiple times too and liked them, since they were mostly faithful to the spirit of the source material even if the stories they told were loosely based on it. The Netflix show however... I was hopeful before it started, slightly disappointed after season 1, but still thought that with some minor improvements it can be really good. I stopped watching in the middle of episode 2 of season 2. It is not an adaptation, it is a poor fan fiction that completely fails to represent the nature of characters involved. Not even that since the writers allegedly are definitely not fans of the source material. If someone likes the show - good, I'm happy for them. But I do not like it, and I refuse to continue to watch it on principle. I'm just sad that an opportunity for a great show has been wasted and that the original story did not get the justice it deserves

@@jonfreeman9682 I don't expect that, and I never said I do. Books and TV are different mediums and some changes are necessary to make it work, that's what adaptation is. Besides, I said I liked the games even though they told a completely different story, loosely based on the original one, but they were faithful to the source material - established characters behaved similarly to what was established, the world was similar enough to believe it is the same world, etc. As for improvements - I'm all for it, if it's done right. LOTR trilogy deviated from the books quite significantly, but never contradicted them and in the end the improvement worked well for the movie. Netflix writers fail miserably trying to improve the original story and that is what I complain about. As for adapting source material for modern audiences - I disagree. I don't think that "modern audience" is any different than past audience and shouldn't require stories to be watered down and simplified to understand them. In my opinion an established story should be told as it is and let it succeed or fail based on its own merits

@@jonfreeman9682 A good story is timeless. You don't need to be 'Modern' to enjoy it and if the show sucks, how has it improved on the source material? The core lore and feel of the story and characters should remain unchanged, even if the show didn't follow the books but set a new arc. If the writers of a show start changing everything about a very deep rooted set of books and it's characters, then why even bother? If people haven't read the books, why would this point them to the source material if this is a hollow, shadow of what made the books so inspiring?

Here are my thoughts: Margarita; - I’m so angry with how they ruined the Sorceresses. Margarita (Lizzo in the show) is one of the most beautiful women alive, and a genuinely kind and compassionate person. In the show? Nah she’s a fat black chick that physically and emotionally abuses her students… Even slaps Ciri upon their first meeting! A girl she was determined to help and train without an ulterior motive. Politics; - The political stuff is essentially trying to emulate GoT, however there’s no weight or substance to it. We don’t really see the Kingdoms. We’re told Redania is the strongest Northern Realm, but there’s no display of that strength. Show us their military being built up subtly throughout the show? Show us their industry and establish the economic importance of the Kingdom. When we’re introduced to Redania it’s a scene where 2 nobles try to assassinate the King, but we don’t know why. And Vizimir appears incompetent despite being strong in the books. We’re also given a “shocking” scene where his Queen is killed this season, kicking off the war. Okay…. Shouldn’t that be important? Why not have a subplot where she’s actually a good ruler trying to avoid war and undermine Djikstra? Establish the diplomat, Ambassador Var Attre, and explore Nilfgaard as an Empire, not just a big cult. Then when the Queen is killed it’s actually impactful because we sympathise with her being the rational and compassionate leader. - Now, Radovid. Making him an adult was the biggest L. His extremism and sociopathy is caused by Philippa abusing him over his childhood. What they should have done was cast a late teen, and have him as the son from Vizimir’s first marriage. But instead of the typical disdain between son & stepmum, have them actually love each other. So when the Queen is killed we see it affects Radovid, and a series of flashes showing he was assisting her secretly throughout her subplot! Thus he knows Djikstra & Phil are responsible, and it’s the catalyst for his tyrannical journey. - Him being gay? It’s pure diversity quota. There’s no narrative reason for it to be written that way. It’s done because there aren’t any gays in the books, AND to give Jaskier more screentime. Even though they could’ve had him helping the Queen. What’s worse is that the Radovid actor looks like he’s constantly on the verge of tears and sounds like a whipped dog. Elves & Nilfgaard; - Cahir has basically been doing nothing since Sodden. In the books he doesn’t actually do anything until the Thanedd Coup, where he tries to help Ciri, then later joins Geralt’s Hanse. So as a means to drive a wedge between him and Emhyr he’s demoted and forced to murder his friend and a valuable ally to the Empire. Why would you trust him Emhyr? He’s just proven he’ll betray anyone! Even worse is that Emhyr chose the wrong Elf to kill. Francesca wants Ciri which makes her a threat. Rebel Elf wants to actually focus on fighting the North and doesn’t care about Ciri! Perfect ally… - Fringilla is worthless. She’s so unimportant we don’t even see her planning and executing her escape. In the book she’s identical in appearance to Yen and sent to seduce and distract Geralt in Toussaint for a few months, and that’s it. So they obviously can’t do that in the future seasons. They should have had her and Cahir escape, try and live in exile, then he kills her to get back into Emhyr’s favour. Perhaps she meets Ciri, plans to kill her for revenge, and Cahir’s intervention leads to tracking Ciri and proposing the Thanedd attack. That would have actually given characters shit to do! There’s just so much wrong with this show. The “writers” should honestly be ashamed.

I love Henry for trying to keep the show on track but this should not be his job. That's got to be stressful as hell to constantly correct it not being lore accurate. They need to start having lore experts or the original writer on set to keep it a faithful adaptation. Sometimes it's okay to change the story a bit for TV series/movie purposes but the way they've changed entire personalities of characters and the story is too far. It's EXTREMELY selfish as a director to be like ''How can I add my agenda, baggage and other junk into this series that isn't my work?'' They're adapting someone else's work and not treating it with the respect it deserves. It bothers the hell out of me cause Amazon did it too with LOTR. This really has to stop cause I'm tired of it.

I actually think the whole series is not that great from the start. You guys give it a very high score for The first season. And I was thinking This show is not that good. But now it's even worse. The acting is bad, the pacing is off And it's very hard to follow what's going on. I'm constantly thinking Is this a flashback or a dream or a magic spell? So the editing is also bad, and it's so boring to watch.

As a fan of the books, the political intrigue and time spent on other characters is something you want. Issue is the show waters it down so much and does a poor job pacing it. Most of the scenes concerning politics are kinda treated like jokes sometimes. There's also character assassinations happening left and right. Dijkstra is a clown, Yen is a jolly teenager, Ciri is a self centered brat, Geralt sometimes acts uncharacteristically childish and emo, Emhyr is a frat boy (he's supposed to be more like Tywin Lannister in demeanor), Vizimir is being played like he's in a stage comedy, Philippa doesn't have her commanding presence and she rivals Padmé Amidala in how many stupid looking wacky hairstyles she has scene to scene, Jaskier has too much angst and lost his poetic wit (also what's with the make-up?), and I'm sure im forgetting some more. There are a few nuggets here and there where a small scene from the books is actually adapted relatively well, but it's amidst all this hogwash. It feels like those are the moments that Henry had to fight so hard to get in the show, because they're the only things with any heart or respect for the source material. It's not supposed to be the Geralt show. The novels were always about Ciri and the grander plot with the mages and kings, and Geralt is the audience vessel and the one having to navigate this world while obviously having deep stake in it. The games are like this too, especially Witcher 2. I wish they DID just endeavor to make a serialized "Witcher adventures" kind of show where every episode is a new monster hunt and moral dilemma, because at least that would be easier for these writers to tackle.

ALL OF THIS is a prime example of how to maturely critique a show. Blaming it on wokeness instead of pointing out the sheer arrogance of the writers room to make the many core changes you mentioned for the sake of leaving their mark on the IP only serves to validate their whole “Henry and the fans are just toxic righ-wing gamers” defence. The problem was never that the fictional fantasy show released in 2023 had black and bisexual people in it, it was that the writers didn’t use their screen presence effectively to tell a compelling story. Deviating from source material isn’t an automatic disqualification, but the changes have to improve the story and aid in adapting it to a visual medium. Nothing these writers did ever accomplished that, or anything for that matter.

Geralts mother being a powerful druid is why he succeeded in the witcher trials, maybe its just me hoping she wasn't as bad as we think. Episode 1 getting an 8/10 was a big surprise. It felt like a 5 to me, so I'm really afraid to know how the other episodes fare given the gradually diminishing grades. Funny to hear Joe say he doesn't care for political intrigue and factions because the books are, like, 50% political intrigue (at least in this part of the story, haven't gotten past to the other books yet), in fact, they're even more intricate and deep than what we see in the show. I don't envy the writers their tough task of balancing the political drama with the fun/emotional drama of the books. I just dunno what made them think it would help if they mangled the original story and invented boring intrigues of their own XD. Like Joe speculates, maybe a better writing team could have made the original story work with an exciting pace. Who knows?

What's funny is that this season stayed more true to the books but still they fucked up many scenes and characters either by misunderstanding those or by not giving a damn. For example Cahir suddenly asking Ciri for forgiveness totally didn't make sense and was out of place. In the books it made sense because he fell in love with Ciri and wasn't THAT bad to begin with. Here he acts like a total psycho in the first and second season and then out of nowhere he's like "Forgive me, Ciri 😩". They also miscast many characters like Margarita who was described as blonde sorceress with a body that even nymphs were jealous of. Instead we got an overweight actress. What the fuck? I'm afraid that they're going to think something along the lines of "We tried to be more truthful to the books and you still didn't like it so we're going to make new things again". Hope not but at this point I don't really look forward to season 4. I just don't care anymore.
