As you can see, Geralt wouldn't have even shown up until episode #4 and the last 2 episodes would have just been Ciri running through a forest. Watching all three characters' perspectives of the events which span an entire century gives weight to the idea that the three are intertwined by destiny.

The audience aren't stupid, leaving it linear would've been more powerful since it'd been a slowburn which will let you truly soak in the world of every characters story and journey, there is a reason most acclaimed tv series have a slowburn quality to them, if this was linear story i bet you it'd had a few awards under its belt, its really really good in linear form. Timeline mixing can be a bit too much, its like vfx for writers, its seems cool nd a bit flashy but can dilute the story if that used extremely carefully. The only writer i know who is a jedi with timeline mixing i'd say is aaron sorkin, social network nd jobs movie were just a masterclass on how to mix timelines nd one thing i can learn from how he uses it is that he doesn't use it to switch perspectives, using it timeline mixing in that way can really dilute the story imo. memento is probably the most incredible example of timeline mixing. oh Tarantino's pulp fiction is another great example but in that movie he isn't just jumping from character to character, he sorta ends a short story of a character before cutting to a new character which gives it that slowburn feel plus the fact that their perspectives arent aligned from some sort of central goal is pivotal too.

@@afrosymphony8207 Nah. Those aren't good comparisons. Memento time jumps are used as reveals, because it's based around a mystery. And this isn't a case of using time jumps as flashbacks to analyze how we got to the present. Pulp Fiction results more in an "out of order, rewind" kinda of viewing. Witcher IS linear, but running in parallel. It's multiple perspective, like a Walking Dead or Game of Thrones or Crash. The "time jumps" only feel like time jumps because when the perspective switches, it goes to people who have been alive for decades before meeting in the end. Again, if you stuck strictly to 1 singular temporal overview perspective, then Yen would have 4 episodes by herself telling a 50 year journey before she even meets Geralt in the town of Rinde. Then you'd get 3 episodes of their time together before Ciri is even born on the last episode. This isn't like a Social Network or a Jobs where the focus is on a singular character or reflection on a singular life. There isn't a pivotal character. All three are linked, so their stories were told at the same time despite being centuries apart in length.

@@thedarkemissary no i think those movies are very good examples of how to use time jumps regardless of the story you're dealing with. And u kinda pointed out the main problem why it doesnt work as well in this, it created lack of a pivotal centre if i might say. i mean can't you see how bizzark the entire structure is explaining it like that?? imagine if lord of the rings decided to give us legolas and gandalfs story of how he became a wizard by time jumping between their various perspectives across multiple time periods nd frodo's mission just to show they were connected by destiny or whatever, we can all agree it would'nt have turned out quite as impactful as the lotr we know and love today cause it would've fucked up the central goal of the movie. Game of thrones too by the way, i mean my gosh have you read the books, they have alot of stuff that could've been told via time jumps but imo that's not a device you use to tell a story across an ENTIRE season unless you really really know what you're doing with it.

@@afrosymphony8207 Right. But, that's the entire point. You have the ring (in present day) that's the central plot point. Everyone else's story resolves around this ring. So, when they do do flashbacks of where the ring came from, how Bilbo got it, all the stuff with Gandalf's back story or Aragorn's back story (not to mention all the stuff left out from the books). It's all in flashback form. Or it's insinuated. And it's all interesting, but it doesn't really factor into the present physical thing/concern. Whereas the entire focus of the Witcher universe is on the idea/concept of this relationship between these 3 characters. There's no ring to destroy, no mountain to get to, no monster to fight, no helms deep to defend. It's all about how these 3 lives interact with each other, have interacted with each other, will interact with each other, from lowly witcher to world renown sorceress to blooddaughter of the gods. Look at it like this, imagine if how Gandalf became a wizard was actually central to the plot. Like knowing how and why he became a wizard was actually pivotal to understanding how he interacts with others and how others interact with him. And again, this is in the context that Frodo and Gandalf haven't met yet, that there isn't a mission yet. It'd be a chapter of him doing his thing, a chapter of Bilbo doing his thing, jumping back and forth, repeat until they eventual meet in the Shire and dude drops the ring on the floor. Except, Gandalf has been around for 200 years and some of the important events that happen to him happened before the Shire even existed.

@@afrosymphony8207 it wouldn't have been a slow burn though it would've been a slow start focusing on characters who don't seem relevant a sudden climax then a meandering finish the non linearity allowed the show to ramp up usually and also gave you those aha moments as you slowly understand how all the scenes fit into the big picture

I liked the three timelines of the first season. It was confusing watching it through the first time but afterward everything clicked. And I don’t think I would have cared as much a bout Ciri if I had only met her in the last two episodes lol

Just what i needed for tomorrow. Good thing that this recap is in chronological order.

The idea "People linked by destiny will always find each other" is the reason the season 1 presented that way. The stories/events moved in such a way that at the end Geralt and Ciri met. Now in season 2 you will watch things in proper order.

Exactly! The mystery behind them keep saying destiny and law of surprise made sense. If it were presented in chronological order it would have been just plain and a silly word bunch of words for those who didnt read the books.

Unfortunately they left out the part where the merchant offers Geralt the Law of the Surprise for saving him, which would have been Ciri anyway. that was a subtle but amazing touch in this entire series.

Tbh the steps that leads Geralt and Ciri to this coming together are way better in the books. In the books, they met before. In the series, it felt kinda off, when they hug each other without the history they had in the books...

@@Haniel93 though there isn’t a deep connection in the books either. They met in brokilon forest and he guided her home. It’s just that they knew a little before. I think the hug was meant as a visualization of the deeper connection they have through the bound of the law of surprise. But yes, it didn’t feel very natural the one or the other way.

@@franzkuntschnig1320 they ALSO met in Brokilon. But the first time they met was in another forest where Ciri was way more younger than when she was in Brokilon. Geralt helped/rescued her from (I think it was something bout a big cat that cannot climb trees. Sorry it's a bit hazy now since it's been awhile that I've read the book) a monster. She got lost from her caravan due to her curiosity about the place (and of course she's a kid). Yes you're correct, when I watched the series first then the book; the series was a little bit unnatural of the way they met. But it might be a good reason that they didn't totally follow the books so that we will read them. And I just did. Andrej just gain another fan from me

i honestly loved how it was out of order. it was like piecing a puzzle together.

I’ve seen season 1 three times but this was still very entertaining! I just want to clarify that Sabrina was under mind control when she attacked Yen:)

@@cryst4l882 I think it's hinted that he's a very dark mind that has his own agenda - to fight, kill, hurt others. He's definitely not a spy, evidenced by his chat mid fight with the man with the winged helmet, but can't be trusted. He'll probably slip over to the "winning" side if he thinks it'll get him what he wants

I really loved the different timelines of the first season, how it was used as a narrative mechanism that made us ask questions until it clicks at the end or on second rewatches. It will really make Season 1 unique to the upcoming ones~

@@trollwayy5981 didn't you watch the show lol? basically she pukes, which signifies she's pregnant. it's a pretty lazy symbol, but an obvious one. he says 'fuck' because now he's bound their child to him through the law of surprise - in this case geralt is like 80 or something (looks younger than he is) so he won't be expected to marry Ciri, but he will be connected to her now as a father figure. Geralt didn't want this because he doesn't want to subject a child to a difficult life - this is different to in the book though. in the book, he claims the law of surprise on purpose, expecting the baby to be a boy so he can train him to be a witcher.

that is false, that is VERY false. The first book followed ONLY Geralt and kept the lore close to its heart. The entire story of how Yennefer got her powers etc is all in later books. As far as I remember, the only stories with her were the titular Last Wish story and the Gold Dragon one

I've read the first book, this is not an excuse for the first season's mess. It was bad, not only the pacing and visual quality, but also the writing and some of the unnecessary "politically correct" changes.

Two biggest things I loved when I first watched this back 2 years ago. The toss a coin to your Witcher song and when Siri says whos Yennefer. God I cant wait for this season

I will NEVER understand why on earth they chose to put this entire season out of order. This 15 minute recap has literally made Season 1 go from WTF??? to WTF!!!!! This is by far the best way to have watched Season 1.

While i agree the season makes a lot more sense when it's in chronological order (having not read the books or played the games), i think the way they structured the storyline was the only way to really get to know ciri's storyline and character. Otherwise we would just see her for the last episode or two and not really get to know her as a character.

they had changed order because yen's story is earlier in timeline and if they start show with her it would not make any sense since, geralt is central part of story, so they introduced yen in second episode instead of first thus leading them to follow different order

If it happened maybe once or twice fine, but it was constantly all over the place and left us going, do what? I know I'm not the only one either as they went on record saying Season 2 would be filmed more chronologically. I mean heck, this trailer even mentions it.

@@yungblacky2939 it was hard to understand the first time you watch it until episode 7. Where they align the time jumps with first episode and it is clearer. But until episode 7 it's confusing as hell. It should be simple to watch and read the show. I hope season 2 doesn't have these time jumps. They don't even have subtitles for these timelines. They just come unannounced out of nowhere and confuse the viewer. I had to rewatch the show and use Google to help me understand it. I have watched many shows. No other show made me google like this one to help me understand it. Any series should be easy to understand. Also they use a lot of jargon and terminology which if you haven't read the books or played the games is so confusing. You don't know what they are even talking about. A wise man once said "show, don't tell" in the cinematic universe.

@@adamknight5089 because they though it would be too complicated for us small brained audience members to understand that one of the stars of a show can be introduced halfway through a series, so they made the backwards decision that 3 different timelines needed to be shown from the very first episode…. Ironically then making it so much more complicated.

Listen again to the last line in this very recap. "People linked by destiny will always find each other." Literally has no weight, since you wouldn't have even met Ciri until the last episode. The whole point was to show that these 3 were on a collision course with one another culminating in the final sequence of the season.

I thought I remembered half of the story, however I actually remembered less then 5% of it. I definitely needed this recap.

What a show. Loving every second of it so far. Replayed the game a few months ago and its really cool to finally understand (some) of what's going on. Its cool theyve leaned more into the game, its a classic like any other witcher medium. The White Wolf Returns 🗡🗡

The whole story is based around the law of surprise. If you know what the law of surprise is you will follow the story easily. If you don't know what the law is then may the god help you. I had to Google what this law is. 😂

That was excellent. Literally saved me from having to rewatch the whole thing to get my head around the timeline jumps. I honestly thought Netflix had labelled the episodes in the wrong order at one point first time around. Or someone had watched too many Christopher Nolan movies 😁

I rewatched the whole show then watched this too.

The Witcher is the most intense series I've watched since the first seven seasons of Game of Thrones.

yes exactly... the timeline ist just so messed up in season 1 and everything just kinda didn't make sense the way it did in the books. But i believe in season 2 they make up for it.

yeah, they will take major liberties again i think, but thats also ok, if it's well done. For me it's ok to see a slightly different story in the show than it was portrayed in the books, that way i have a reason to watch it and not just be satisfied with my imagination of the books. The first season actually inspired me to read all the books before season 2 to see what was different and the same applies to the new wheel of time show. I quite like it, when the story is not exactly like in the books to keep me motivated. But thats just a personal take

@@woolwizard1967 i have no problem with the changes they made, but they completely removed three stories that were top of all, shard of ice, a little sacrifice and sword of destiny. Which made me cry so i felt bad about it. hope they cover major stories here atleast

OMG get it started already!! Can't wait! I just hope you can fix the elves for the upcoming seasons. They are supposed to all be stunning majestic and beautiful. The elves in season one looked like some one glued pig ears to the side of their heads.

lool ngl u right. They could have picked someone a bit more impressive for the elf king. Maybe the idea is thought that they've been brought to their lowest, starving, perhaps that affects their appearance a lot

@@LemonSte I don't expect them to cast only supermodels for every elf character it's just those ears :P But maybe living up in the mountains and not getting enough nutrition makes them droop down and look half pug

I dont need a recap. I know it by heart. I need new Witcher and I'm so hyped!!!

I think the time jumps would've been fine had they explained that witchers/mages don't age like regular humans. If you've never engaged with the books/games how are you supposed to know that Geralt is well above 80 in the present timeline? A literal 30 second scene or a line or 2 of dialogue explaining what witchers actually are would've been nice. It's the same with the potions and his eyes turning black, this is never explained in the show either and is instead just assumed. Are all the potions doing the same thing or is he drinking different potions for different scenarios like in the games? Other than that I think it's great, things make a lot of sense in s2 and you can appreciate s1 more during a rewatch.

IF, if, people pay attention, they will see in one of the first episodes Yennefer calls out that she has alredy lived a long time for example. There are multiple examples of characters saying roughly how much time passed

There are clues about this littered throughout the whole series if youd listen to the dialogue carefully. Yennefer makes some references to her long life in the first few episodes as well as the last episode. In the last episode youll even catch a few other mages saying “ive lived long enough” before they head into battle at sodden, and also dialogue between Tissia and Yennefer, yennefer tells her that shes lived 2 or 3 lifetimes and is prepared to die. Just some examples
