The Wire: Jimmy McNulty - "Good Police"

Фильм және анимация

David Simon's modern classic, The Wire, is worthy of a multi-part series about the characters, codes and institutions that give the cult classic its definition. Our first entry explores the polarizing Jimmy McNulty.
Simon's new show, The Deuce, premieres September 10th, on HBO.

Cutty's story is easily my favorite of the Wire. Him and Bubbles are the only characters who are completely redeemed by the end of the show. Maybe Colvin as well but he never was exactly "bad" in the past. I feel like he's always been good police.

@@Goleary1 Colvin, McNulty, Greggs, Freamon, and Russell were all great police who cared about their communities and not necessarily the rank they held or was held above them. Bunk had several great moments too especially with Omar and retrieving Dozerman's gun. Rawls, Royce, and Valchek were godawful and very unhelpful but absolutely believable. Landsman and Daniels were effective middle managers that were not perfect but held up their end of their job when it counted minus an incident or two plot related.

In a time when so many channels are covering Game of Thrones, Rick and Morty and Westworld it's refreshing to go back to the shows that made them possible. The Wire was a turning point in tv history. It respected the viewers enough not to spoonfeed every little detail to them. You had use your head to follow the plots and that's why it's a masterpiece. The Sopranos was just as influential in my opinion but that's not what we're talking about here...

Sam Seaver I know it's a week later, youtube isn't notifying me for some reason, but I 100% agree with you. I would also throw Deadwood into the mix because that was the first tv show to use a budget closer to a movie than a series. I'm open to correction on that but no matter how you put it, HBO revolutionised tv and started to golden age of the silver screen we live in today..

Hands down the best show ever made! Timeless. Timeless because it will be important 100 years from now. It shows America at its core. Holds a mirror up to the face of America and its bureaucracy. Baltimore in this show is Every major city in the western world. People need to see this, 3/4/5 times. The layers, the subtleties, all there. I can't see how it will ever be topped. The ones who know how good this show is will forever cherish it. I will never stop watching the wire. 'All the pieces matter...'

The Wire was so underrated. While I've been clean for a long time now, I lived the life of an addict for a long time, and this was one of the only shows, books, movies, or media of any kind that got close to what the system's really like. It's really sad that a fictional story is closer to the truth than anything you'll see on the news. The Wire was both entertaining, and true to what life is really like for addicts, dealers, the many dirty cops, and the few who actually care about helping the community that employs them.

i feel like jimmy's ending is the most bittersweet of the entire series. yes, he has had a great personal victory, but ideologically, he has lost everything, as he tells that lying reporter "im just a big fucking joke." the system beat him, and i think that ending montage is him looking out at the city as it is: just the way it was when the series started (i.e. all the characters who take on the roles of previous characters, ex: michael becoming omar, dukie becoming bubbles."). all those betrayals, all that work he did, all the sacrifices he made in his own life, none of them stuck because the city doesn't allow the heroes to win. also i think carver, daniels, and rhonda all had pretty good endings like bubbles. carver made rank by being good police, and rhonda and daniels are able to do good work in the court system. thanks for the great video! not enough youtubers talk about the wire.

After watching this video, I just realized my Dad is just like Jimmy and coincidentally, he's a retired police officer :) It's so strange how many parallels I find between them. My Dad would tell the truth, even when if it meant risking his job (which it did) and being denied promotions (which it did). He would say things to me like "I don't care if you like me, but you will respect me" and "If you're wrong, you're wrong. Don't expect me to lie just because we're friends". He drove me bonkers when I was a kid, but at the end of the day , I learned the importance of speaking your truth and standing up for what you believe in. Thanks Dad.

The Wire is what happens when you make a city's institutions the ultimate characters of a show instead of the characters themselves. That is the secret to it's brilliance beyond, "great acting and writing." :)
