I'll hate Herc forever how he totally fucked over Randy. Gotta blame Carver as well for not following up before it was to late. There's no happy endings in the wire and that's the rub. I do strongly believe that Randy become Stringer due to his business sense and hardened exterior due to how much he went through. Prez told Daniels I don't want him getting lost in the system and that's exactly what happened. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. They were better off leaving him alone. Most shows you watch would show a happy ending, not this one and that's the reason it's the best show ever. More like a live documentary not a tv show

I said this a while ago: this is the foreshadowing of Marlo. Nobody knows Marlo's origin, but the police said that he was the spawn of Satan. Marlo does not respect authority, but nobody knows what led him to that. No one is born a sociopath, but things along the way of someone's development can bring that person to that crossroad. Look at Randy: abandoned by parents/never knew parents (possible father is Cheese); only stable foster parent is working, leaving him lots of time in the streets; has a good entrepreneurial sense but a tarnished rep that he didn't really earn; most of all, a child forced to grow up too fast. He ended up back in the system due to circumstances brought on by a cover up. Years go by, and now Randy is hardened by being in the system with no outlet and constant abuse (assuming that his punishment didn't stop). Every adult he's tried to trust has let him down, so now he's in a position that he has no other choice to depend on himself. The only soft spot I can give on Marlo is when he was observing Chris interact with his children; that brought a smile to Marlo's face. This could lead me to believe that Marlo could have been an orphan and longed for a family: sounds like Randy, right?

Dave Trachtenberg I think differently. Plenty of people who grew up in a terrible system can grow out of it like the black actors in the Wire and the real-life inspiration of Omar. Randy by nature and by his formative years knew the world outside of his neighborhood due to his decent forster mother and his ability to take advantage of the access to the internet and his education system. I think this scene is meant to comment more of the ignorany and stupid actions of the police and social service instead and provide a closure to Randy's story. Once he is out the place, I think he can build something of himself.

Bunk is generally a very smart detective. You just wouldn't know it from this scene. The arrogance of him coming in with that kind of a heavy handed speech, with threats against Randy tossed in, and thinking that was going to work on a kid whose life had been treated so viciously and callously by the system. Randy lost everything. Threats weren't going to work on him like they did back in the time he was dealing with Miss Donnelly. The happy go lucky kid, with that endearing smile, is now someone whose demeanor is a mirror image of Marlo.

The thing I love about the wire was there was no true happy endings, most shows try to do that where everyone lives happily ever after or the last episode is heartwarming. Not the wire. This show was the sad reality of life in Baltimore. Of the 4 corner boys in season 4, only Namond was able to get out and be a success story, and that was because he got lucky to develop a relationship with Colvin and unlike his friends his father was in his life even though he was in jail, he still made sure his boy had a chance at a better life than he had. The other 4 boys sadly became statistics Michael is the new Omar after retiring from drug dealing, Randy has been failed by the system and is all alone, and Dukie became a homeless drug addict. It’s heartbreaking to see where the boys ended up.

I think Randy's storyline was the best in the whole show, close to Wallace in Season 1. Both of these kids were almost completely innocent when you meet them. Both are trapped in the environments they grew up. While most would say that Wallace is more tragic because he actually gets killed, there's something way more disturbing about Randy. He literally gets the innocence beaten out of him. A good kid getting killed is heartbreaking, but a good kid turning into a bad one is worse IMO.

They never really developed it but Cheese was Randy’s Father. He also inherited Prop Joe’s business sense. I felt Randy still had a chance even though ended up in the institution. Seemed he was heading for a long and windy road, but he could end up possibly having a normal life at some point if he made it through the turbulence his life was heading. He was such a sweet kid that the system ruined.

This is why nobody likes the police Bunk couldn't help randy and he knew it, it's not like he cared to help him Anyway, All he could do was threaten him and coerce him But what could you threaten randy with which he already hasnt gone through? He already got fucked over

Yeah, bunk is good police, but you can tell he's motivated to solve murders first and foremost. Carver is absolutely gutted by Randy's fall, whereas Bunk turns up, says his piece (trying to bluff, scare & threaten the boy, even after knowing the tragic backstory) and leaves. He's a good detective and shakes the only branch in front of him, but it's just process. Randy's swallowed by the system, and he's just a piece in Bunk's puzzle, barely even a human being.

Man, this scene hurt my heart when I first saw it. When you remember how Randy was just one season before, smiling and full of hopes and dreams, only to see him here---older, drained of his hope, and hiding behind a hard exterior that you know he's only doing in order to protect himself because of the reputation he gained for being a snitch---I truly broke down and cried. Because all I could think about was the possibilities he could have had if only he had been allowed the opportunity.

We we agree or not, the ONLY child we should agree with is Spider. He's the true foreshadow of Bodie. All he does is hustle, all he does is keep the count right. There is nothing beyond that with him.

Gotta wonder how Randy would have turned out if he had known Prop Joe and Cheese. I feel like Joe would have taken him in if he'd known.
