The Winding Path of Progress | Sam Altman | Talks at Google

Sam Altman is the president of Y Combinator, the most prestigious startup incubator in Silicon Valley, but his vision for humanity's future goes far beyond northern California.
Since taking the helm at Y Combinator, Sam has spearheaded the creation of new initiatives like YC Research, a nonprofit branch of Y Combinator that aims to conduct pure research into moonshot ideas like universal basic income, as well as OpenAI, a nonprofit AI research company working on creating a path toward artificial intelligence that can benefit all of humanity. Sam visits the Mountain View office to share his thoughts on a wide range of topics, including bias in the workplace, the most underrated quality of successful startup founders, the potential benefits of nuclear fusion, the growing challenge of economic inequality, and the role of the tech industry in politics.
Moderated by Jorge Cueto.

I totally agree with Sam about the importance of determination in a founder. It's so easy to give up when things go wrong, but it takes true grit to keep pushing forward and find a way to overcome the challenges. And I think it's really cool that YC is looking for founders who have that quality, rather than just focusing on the idea or the network. As for independent thought, I think that's also really important. It can be tough to break out of the mold and think for yourself, especially when there are so many social pressures pushing you in certain directions. But I think it's important for entrepreneurs to be able to see things in a different way and come up with innovative ideas that nobody else has thought of. Overall, I think these are some great insights into what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur, and I'm excited to see what kind of companies YC will fund in the future

You should do this exact same talk (same questions) with Altman, in 2022, after 2 years of Covid, after 1 year of Jan 06 Capitol attack and after 1 year of Joe Biden...some of his 2017 answers are prescient (UBI) and others are off-base or not discussed at all (global warming).

well, it's because we have a lot of insincere people who are really concerned about what others think of them, so they've all competitively circle-jerked each other into seeing your allegiance to these arbitrary set of values as some form of currency. so you'll see a lot us feigning outrage at some conjured injustice that we don't really care about, or at times we'll seem to be inanely obsessed with the topic. you notice they don't really seem to care about diversity of thought so much, but making sure we've collected all the different skintones and genital types is SUPER important.
