The Winchester 350 Legend ~ A legend invented

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Winchester introduced their 350 Legend at the 2019 Shot Show, with promises of a new super deer hunting cartridge. Reality does not look as good as the promise, as examined here. In fact, my investigation of Winchester's own ballistic data revealed some disturbing deceptions. Be careful before laying down your hard bucks on this self declared legend.

    2023 update on my experience with 350 Legend. I have used in the past 30-30 (my go-to rifle), 7mm-08, 243 (great deer round), 30-06, 65.x55, and a couple others in 47 years of hunting all sizes of North American game animals. In the last 3 years since I picked up a Ruger Ranch in 350 Legend. I have taken in one shot, 3 - 250+lb whitetail bucks, 3 does, 2 Black Bears, and a Bull Moose who dropped in on me when I was hunting deer. All deer dropped on the spot (under 150yds) which has never happened before. The 2 black bears ran at most 40yds before dropping. The moose took one in the engine room and one in the shoulder which is my standard moose shot after 23 moose. Not one moose ever dropped in one engine room shot. We always put one int he shoulder to immobilize it. The lethality of this round is now unquestioned by me and our group. I can say with real field experience this is the most ethical round I have used. The 150gr XP Winchester drops deer on impact. The 180gr Super-X Winchester drops bear and moose as well as any calibre I've taken those animals with. The real bonus is 8lb recoil, 16" -18 inch barrels and super lightweight rifles. It is without question the most accurate round I have ever shot. I have 4 different manufacturers bullets I use and every one is far less than 1MOA. The beauty of this round due to recoil is its incredible accuracy. If there is one rifle that every person should have in the safe is a 350 Legend bolt action. My hunting camp crew all agree. They have flipped to it with the same incredible results.

    Hello Sir, Welcome back to you. Delighted as always to be educated by your knowledge. I usually say... First on the Frontier First on the Firing Line Winchester, It is Your Hertiage I guess I will have to add... Sometimes Last on Facts.... Thank you for sharing, the best part for me was that you have taught about sectional density and I knew the number! 240's 👍 It looks like for lower Michigan, the Ruger American .450 Bushmaster is still the best choice for deer using a limited range straight wall cartridge. We have it accurate out to 300 yards and then gravity rules. With regard to recoil, it is equal to a standard 20 guage, very manageable, my wife loves it. Best to you and your family, continued prayers for Benny. God Bless, Rick Mansberger

    Rick, thank you. I'm intrigued by your wife's conclusion about the Bushmaster's recoil, given that it is typically listed with 30-06 recoil figures. It's one round I have not used, so I have no literal comparison. And that's with a light American?

    @@GunBlue490 We give it about the same recoil as a .20 guage which is what Ruger said it would be. Some like to lessen it more with a a muzzle brake which now it comes with one installed. The original 450's from Rady's Gun Shop in Bad Axe, Mi had the muzzle brake as an option. It was released for the AR-15 market. It is only a viable option for those platforms and for the straight wall restricted states. For everyone else it is of no consequence or value as the market is already flooded with capable calibres of which we generally already have one if not multiple versions.

  • @GunBlue490

    Very true. Winchester thinly disguised their agenda by releasing it chambered for their bolt action, having no AR rifle of their own, at least at this time. If their true intent was to satisfy the need for folks who are restricted to straight wall cartridges, with ample power and sectional density for deer sized game, they would have designed a round using a case of correct dimensions that truly has that honest capacity, not a half baked one that conveniently fits an AR-15 magazine. Energy alone without sectional density is just a number. What is most disgusting to me is that nobody in the world knows about bullet sectional density requirements on game better than Winchester (Fabrique Nationale). To place this round on par with the well established killing performance of the (imagine, their own!) 30-30 is snake oil quackery. As you said correctly, we already have a slew of highly capable straight wall cartridges, including their own 375 Winchester that they've ignored for decades.

    My two cents, I been hunting Turkeys since the early 1970s before all the hype of hunting them started. Here is a load for you but, pattern it out of your shotgun . 30" circle at 30 yards. Yes 30 yards no more. You are looking for a shot pattern with out a lot of areas not covered tightly with the shot draw a normal size Turkey head and neck on the paper that's what you will be shooting at for a clean kill. You will also try different companies loads due to there performance till you find what works to your satisfaction. That's as far as anyone should be shooting at a Turkey. Standard 12gauge full choke 26" or longer barrel, and your shells should be #6 with 11/4 ounce load. Shoot for the head only. You will take the bird leanly with that shot placement. If you cannot get to within 30 yards 40 maximum then come back and hunt them another day. Happy hunting. Hope this helps you.

    The 350 Legend is competing with the 6.5 Grendel, 25-45 Sharps, 6.8 SPC, 300 Blackout, 223 and other AR conversion ammo. It has the market mentioned in the video for states that have the straight wall requirement, which is probably meant to limit range in deer rifles. It's a middleweight cartridge for shooting deer at short range and I suspect it will be around for a while due to low price and mild recoil.

    In my home state of Michigan, which I live half the time from about central Michigan to Norther Michigan we can hunt with any caliber you want, which is nice. But from southern to central Michigan we are kind of screwed and only limited to 44 magnum or up to a 450 BM,shotgun/muzzle loader, and now looks like we can now legally use this new 350 Legend caliber. Maybe I will get 1 of these rifles now. Thanks for bringing this to my attention GunBlue490.

It was designed for states that CANNOT shoot shouldered cartridges. It doesnt kick at all. It is good to 200 yards. Just my personal experience with it in the field. So I agree do some testing before you try to talk crap on something number mean nothing until you test it for yourself.

    I purchased a Ruger American Ranch 16in 350 Legend and I am really happy with it. I will say this much about it. It is a 150 yard round, it's recoil is really mild, it's not terribly expensive to shoot with 147gr fmj, and It makes a good "truck gun" for my needs. 10 round mags are plenty in a bolt action and keep the weight down. It all boils down to needs and philosophy of use. I knew going into buying the rifle that it was a brush gun and use it as such. It also makes a damn fine range "toy" with just a decent red dot or holo sight. I am really glad to see this video because it really hits the nail on the head about the bogus marketing schemes involved. 350 Legend is a great cartridge and I do hope it sticks around for a while but people just have to have the truth about what it is and it's limitations. Cheers, God bless, be safe.

    Thanks Gunblue for not completely disregarding this cartridge I live in Michigan and we have that law in regards to only being able to used shotguns in certain zones I believe this cartridge is gonna be real fun for load development and casting especially seeing that you can used .357 molds I mean honestly the combinations are vast and yes Sir you did in fact hit the nail on the head with the AR crowd that enjoys hunting with said configuration with that being said what would you recommend for a good straight walled case that meets the requirements for Michigan other then the 350 legend because right now really all that’s available would be the .357mag and 44mag and really there is only a few offerings for decent platforms to shoot those out of my first choice was gonna be the Ruger 77/44 now that’s a nice bolt action I can get behind thing is Ruger discontinued that model then you have the lever action rigs and those are nice to only problem is with those you can’t get a good one nowadays with out a safety you have to go used and since the DNR ( DNR=department of natural resources) has opened up the restrictions in the shotgun zones those types of rifles have skyrocketed it’s really ridiculous so with all that being said I definitely have to look at this cartridge

    Thank you for being so straight forward. I think that manufactures do themselves harm with inflated claims. Many cartridges come and go, ultimately, real hunters figure out pretty fast what works and what does not work. I personally do penetration tests as part of my recreational shooting (I have a little range in a gravel pit on my farm) and have come to appreciate the effect of bullet construction and a host of other variables when it comes to penetration. I am sure that others do the same. Before too long, someone will do real world testing on the 350 Legend, penetration, velocity etc. and put it on KZread. I do not need a straight walled cartridge to hunt deer in my area so it won't be me.

    Irregardless of barrel length and velocity, the sectional density of the 30-30 is far superior in penetration, which Winchester is well aware of, and of which they are concealing from folks quite cleverly for marketing purposes. Penetration by virtue of sectional density is the vastly superior indicator of killing power and they know it better than anyone, because they built the 270 upon it.

  • @anthonyperotti151

    Sectional density is a mathematical determination...not necessarily a true tell-tale of penetration and killing ability. By mathematics...a bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly. Shot placement and terminal performance/bullet construction is more the determining factor of a bullet’s ability to kill.

    I didn't pay any attention to any marketing hype, because I am not going to be hunting deer with this cartridge. I am going to be using it for coyotes, plinking, and as a subsonic round for varmints. It will be a minimal expense to build an upper for an AR, and there are a number of attractive and inexpensive bolt action rifles. The Ruger American uses AR pattern magazines which are available in short 5 and 10 round versions as well as 20 round versions. As a bonus I can use .355 and .357 bullets I already have. Winchester made a deliberate choice to not use .358 bullets, which I wholeheartedly applaud. I am also confident there will be plenty of factory loadings available in the near future that will take plenty of deer.

  • @GunBlue490

    @GunBlue490

    4 жыл бұрын

    If I were to use an AR-15 for deer, I would choose the 6.8 Remington SPC or the 6.5 Grendel. The 6.8 is a .270 bore diameter, though the limitation of short bullets reduces its sectional density, so I'd go with a very strong bullet rather than a ballistic tip. The 50 Beowulf is more powerful, but unnecessary in terms of ammo cost and recoil for deer. Frankly, I'm rather perplexed about the use of an AR-15 for deer, unless it's the only gun a person has. Its advantage of firepower is nullified by most state laws which restrict magazine capacity to five shots, and the selection of really suitable calibers is limited to cartridges that generally have marginal penetration, bore size, and limited range. I am an AR-15 owner and enjoy shooting it often, and I have much praise for it as a worthy target and defense rifle, with combat experience with it in Vietnam, but honestly, it's the last gun I'd take on a deer hunt for a basketful of reasons. I know that's not a popular opinion, but I believe that a gun should fit the required ammo and hunting conditions, not the other way around.

    They are peas in a pod ballistically, and though I have no specific data, I presume their relative performance would be similar in different barrel lengths. However, I would prefer a rimmed cartridge in an Encore for more consistent headspacing without reliance on maintaining exact trim length. Most successful Encore cartridges are either rimmed or have standard bottleneck headspace, so I'd go with the Maximum.

My brother's nephew downed a huge 10 point with his... his snow plowed twenty yards to his death bed. My opinion is if you want a short lightweight carbine rifle that points fast and the ammo is inexpensive get yourself one. It will knock the snot out of the biggest buck in the woods inside of 100 yards!

    Have you looked into the Hornady 170 grain power point I only ask cause now I somewhat feel bad I took 3 deer last year between 170 yards and just over 220 and it did really well but if it’s not ethical to take them at that range I would like to know that is above my knowledge level I do know the bullet density is like .218 or something like that but I would appreciate feed back sir thank you.

    For those who live in strait wall cartridge areas who only own an AR but want to try and hunt deer out to 150 yards, buying an upper in this may be a decent budget way to start. If they decide to stick with hunting, strongly suggest getting a dedicated deer rifle.

So far I like how it shoots, it seems accurate enough at 100 yards, and I just made some reloads for it today with 9 mm bullets I had. Hopefully I'll have a chance to shoot a deer with it this fall. Perhaps it will work out decently for some, but I suspect this will be yet another "All Talk, No Walk" cartridge ala .224 Valkyrie from last SHOT Show. Thanks for your incite on this. They are answers to solutions that nobody needed or asked for. Whatever merit they might have over their original versions entirely arguable, and won't be evident to game or targets. Their large, ungainly cases call for larger and heavier diameter specialized rifles, expensive ammo and brass, rounds that chamber more like cigar stubs than rifle rounds, and certainly more difficult to find ammo in hideaway places. Popularity of them is still struggling, which translates to reduced market value in resales. The ultimate survival of any one of them may still be questionable, and when a manufacturer determines one to be a cost liability, those who own them will be in the same boat as countless others. Don't get me wrong. They are very fine cartridges. Gun makers make few mistakes on that score. The issue is one of practically, of which I see none, and some further increase the rate of barrel wear over their former counterparts that are here to stay. As for which diameter bore, I really couldn't offer you any advice without knowing what your game is.

    There are millions of 30-30 rifles out there in the hands of not only "senior citizens", but younger folks as well. So we're not fearful of that caliber becoming extinct. Lever action rifles have become very popular and desirable in recent years, partly due to nostalgia but also due to practicality. Look at Ruger putting out the new Marlin line with people jumping on the new 1895 and anticipating the release of the new 336 and 1894 models. Look at the deep lineup and popularity of the Henry line. It's not likely that either the lever action or the 30-30 caliber will become extinct.

  • @daltonwinchenbach7982

    I see the points your making but what you’re not considering is the Sammi specs for the cartridges. 30-30 maximum pressure is around 42,000 psi, the 350 legend maximum pressure is 55,000psi. The 350 legend allows and does utilize much higher chamber pressures than the 30-30. 350l will use hotter faster burning powder than 30-30. So Honestly your argument is invalid. You did research but you yourself cherry picked your data and left out the most important factor is ballistic performance, that being the allowable chamber pressures.

    I was happy to see you made a video sharing your opinion on this new cartridge. Here's why I'm getting very interested in it, I'm thinking of it somewhat like an M1 carbine Magnum, in my state we do not have to worry about this straight wall cartridge thing and we mostly have a bunch of elk and mule deer. However, if my wife or my teenage daughter was to grab a carbine and step out the back door, she could be shooting at coyotes or two-legged predators. I'm thinking this might fill that role very well. It also seems to me as far as reloading goes this might be a good candidate if I can use 9 mm projectiles.

    In full agreement with GunBlue490, the 350 legend fulfills a niche in those states that have the mysterious straight wall cartridge regulations, and only for those who are less robust than a full grown man. The 444 Marlin would be a better cartridge for a full grown man, in those straight wall states. But, what if you live close to the southern border of the United States and feel the need for an AR platform rifle that can both eliminate people, and take down small to medium game? If one is looking for one firearm to hunt game and protect against people, it is an option. I would choose the M14 for that dual purpose firearm, but I'm a full grown man. I'm not knocking the AR platform, because I've shot it and it's easy to see how somebody would choose it.

There are so many fantastic cartridges already available, it's not easy to find an open space in the market. As you say, perhaps this will be great for states with peculiar, uh, I mean particular laws, but I'm not sure how useful it would be for anyone else. My only foray into recently debuted cartridges turned out to be unusually successful, I love my little .17HMR! I have a few thousand rounds through my Savage 93R17 over the course of 10 or so years. I wanted to be sure the .17 would stay around. Shortly after I got the Savage in .17, Aquila started making 5mm ammo again, so I have them both in service, much to the chagrin of the starlings and pigeons around my farm.

The AR is a good hunting rifle with an adjustable stock, even from a stand where the single point sling means the magazine is against your leg and keep your hands in your pockets. It's a proven, powerful deer and black bear cartridge that has been around for many decades. It's large open point can be very destructive if it hits muscular tissue. It is everything that the 350 Legend is not, by virtue of greater bullet weight combined with strong velocity, and much greater powder capacity. Heavy bullets cannot be loaded into the 350 Legend with it's restricted AR-15 magazine length, which is the obvious market it is engineered for.

  • @GunBlue490

    @GunBlue490

    5 жыл бұрын

    It would be a hot round in 19th Century terms, but I'm not sure what the point would be. In terms of powder capacity and brass construction, it would be a lesser version of the obsolete 25-20 Winchester lever gun. Lots less powerful than a 250 Savage, which was replaced by the 257 Roberts, and ultimately overshadowed by the 243 Winchester and 25-06. The Maximum case was a revolver round, and is much thinner and weaker than rifle cases, so it's pressures must be kept comparatively low. Minimum power for a short range deer round, and too powerful for short range varmints, and not powerful enough to be a flat shooting gun. I think it would be a cartridge looking for a purpose. Lastly, rimmed cartridges don't feed well from box magazines, and require very careful follower design. Invest your new barrel in a round that will do your M77 justice. If you like 25 caliber, the 257 Roberts is the cream of the crop.

    I do like that people are more and more hunting with their AR rifles because hunting is one of the things the gun grabbers say they think is okay, and they say the AR is for killing people, not for hunting. So the more pictures of hunters standing over their game with an AR rifle the better.

  • @GunBlue490

    @GunBlue490

    That's logical to us, but gun grabbers are almost universally anti-hunters, and they certainly don't enjoy or look at photos of dead game, and the sight of hamburger in a store is a horror to the vegan-PETA crowd. The only folks who see our photos or are impressed are members of the choir, and they already know what kind of gun they prefer. Though I love to shoot my AR, and enjoy it immensely, it is clumsy, cold (all that metal and plastic on a snowy 26 F morning??!!) heavy, and awkward in the field, and it unnecessarily limits ballistic selections to cartridges that are crammed into it. With a standard 20 inch barrel with so-so ballistics, they are balanced at the carry handle or scope, and the barrel has no weight to steady on shots. But with a heavier barrel that aims well, they become ungainly to carry. Most states don't permit hunting with a semi auto with greater than five rounds, which negates the capacity advantage they were designed for. They are an excellent design for what they do, but in a world of so many far superior options, I would be the last person to recommend an AR as the best hunting solution. Whether we keep our Second Amendment rights is a persistent fight against hysterical anti-hunters and anti-gunners that has nothing whatsoever to do with associating the AR-15 rifle to hunting, which is just another reason for condemnation to Friends of Bambi. I've been fighting this fight since the 70s, decades before the AR became popular, and they came after my walnut stocked bolt actions with just as much enthusiasm. They will always have a reason to come after guns, because their logic is tied up in their man buns and yoga, not their pot-fried brains.

Some of these laws make no sense. The only rifles you can use here are pistol cartridges like 357, 45 colt, 44mag, etc. I know the gun grabbers are against hunting, but they lie and say they're all for it to fool the people on the fence, people who are not gun people, and hunters that are not gun people but who hint with traditional looking rifles and shotguns. I just like to be able to point to pictures of deer hunters who hunted with an AR rifle to show the non gun owning voters that the gun grabbers are lying when they say a deer will explode if you shoot it with an ar15.

    Mr. Gun Blue: Iowa requires rifle calibers from .350 - .500 bore (necked-down, straight-wall or pistol), or, shotguns, for deer during most gun seasons except the special January antlerless hunt whereby virtually any caliber CF deer rifle cartridge can be used to clean up those remaining mangement does as a result of any surplus tags. The Savage Axis in .350 Legend seems to be the "new .30-06" for rifle-caliber-restrictive more-eastern American states. The 6.5 Creedmoor was once so wonderfully touted but some cornfield state game regulators don't seem to dig it much. I don't fancy toting my nice 1971-vintage steel-blued/checkered wood stocked Sako L579 Forester .243 bolt-action in the freezing snow for a January freezer doe should I end up moving to the Hawkeye State. I must have a modern shoulder-fired low-recoiling but accurate gun with a grooved bore to haul in the venison to my freezer. This notion of shotguns, Savage 220 bolt slug guns, handguns, muzzle-loaders and archer's bows for deer doesn't make my cut. In no mood to trifle, I like the notion of taking down a trusty rifle on a November day so clear out to hunt some deer.

I see the hype and the marketing to sell new products over and over again. I have been fortunate to have bought my guns over a period of 30 years, so they became affordable. I have decided that I have everything I need to hunt anywhere in the world. My 7-08 rifle is plenty for Pennsylvania deer. My Tikka .270 should do for Pronghorn at long distances. The Winchester model 70 in 300 Win Mag. should be enough for mule Deer, Caribou and Elk? My 45-70 or 450 Marlin should do for close range large pigs, black bears and Sasquatch. If I am lucky enough to go on an Alaska coastal grizzly hunt, My Remington 375 H&H should be plenty, given that I put the bullet on the right place. See, we old guys have come to the realization that we don’t need a new cartridge. We just need the proper load for the rifle in question and practice, practice, so when the moment comes, we put the bullet where it needs to be. Thank you for the honest talk. The AR 15 is the best selling and most popular rifle/carbine in the USA. Neither the 30/30, nor the 35 Remington is short enough to cycle in the AR15 platform. This round will sell like hotcakes as it basically turns an 11.5" Braced AR Pistol into a 357 Lever Action Carbine. It's the modern incarnation of the '92 Winchester/ 1894 Marlin 357 mag and fills the same roll. Short, Handy, and HARD hitting... Jeff Cooper's "Thumper". And if they meet the price point of under $10 a box I think it will quickly surpass sales of 300 Black Out. They are advertising 150gr@2300fps out of a 20" barrel. Quite a bit warmer than 357 magnum and almost approaching my 35 Rem 180gr handloads which clock in at the same velocity with a 30gr heavier payload.

    From the research I've done, from some chronograph results I've seen and from Winchester's data and from others. Winchester is claiming 20% more velocity and energy over a .30-30 at the muzzle from the same length barrel and bullet weight. So far, those numbers seem to be on point. Ballistics in terms of energy and velocity however seem to be identical to Remington 6.8 SCP 2 loads and .35 Remington loads. Which is a good thing truly... Unlike 6.8 SPC it seems like it will not limit capacity, so like .300 Blackout it will allow for a 30 round capacity on the AR platform. Ultimately though.. I think it will be a marginal success as it ultimately seems to be targeting hunters who live in states that restrict straight walled cases and such.

I would greatly prefer the more versatile 45-70, which has a large selection of bullet weights and velocities, or even the 444 Marlin. If you can find a 375 Winchester, that's a terrific choice, too. The Bushmaster would be my last choice, mostly because I would never want to carry my AR-15 around in the field, which feels more like the bumper jack in my old 59 Buick Electra than a rifle, and points about as naturally. ;-). "Even though the 8mm Remington Magnum has never been very popular, it is a very suitable cartridge for the hunting of elk, moose, caribou, and larger African antelope. However, the .338 Winchester Magnum had a 30-year head start on the market, and is short enough for medium length actions, which increases the models of rifles it could be produced in. It is also available with heavier bullets, although this isn't a problem for people that load their own rounds of this caliber. Bullet selection is quite critical with the 8mm Remington Magnum since the bullets have to be designed and constructed to hold together at magnum velocities."

    I have not done one on it. It's a good but highly specialized round for very large game. I remember when it came out with lots of fanfare, but it died on the vine very shortly afterwards. I was working part time at a sporting goods store then. The reception was almost always the same. Someone would come into a store to look at one after reading about it, but when I showed him the round, he would say something like "wow! that's too much gun for me!" The one Remington we had on the shelf was looked at and pawed over for nearly two years before it was finally sold at dealer cost, just to get rid of it. Dealers everywhere had the same issue, so they never re-ordered them. I must be honest; I don't think there's much point to hosting a round that is so rare, which was obsoleted by Remington so long ago. It's a great round. Enjoy it!

    Luvta Handload sorry, but that’s a direct quote from guns and ammo magazine. Remington announced it and Elmer made that statement. Now, he may have died before it came to market but he dang sure made that comment. He was a good friend of my old friend, Erv Malnarich of Hamilton, MT. Elmer used to teach marksmanship at Erv’s guide school.

    I wish I had all the guns I've bought and sold since 1978! But I've kept it down to a large safe full instead of a room full. The classic guns I had from the 60's - 80's are now selling between $1,500 - $2,500+! Oh well. I consolidated the 30-30 and 30-06 to 308 bolt action. I sold my .243, 6.5x55, and .270 along the way, expanding the .223/5.56 category instead. Yep, I loved every one of the calibers I sold, but I can only afford and be proficient with a few calibers. My faves (must haves) are down to .22LR, .223, .308, and 20g. I still have 12g shotguns with ammo. But the 20g is lighter, faster, less recoil, and does everything I want. So I've been using up and phasing out the 12g. I've been stocking up on 350 Legend and looking for an AR upper. Seems like a good woods rifle, with an occasional shot across a field. So a little more flexible for deer than my shotgun, without the power and expense of the .308. If you're all set up with 30-30, or a .35 Remington, keep it. Even the 7.62x39 is good enough and cheaper. And the Ruger Mini 30 is lighter and a bit more accurate than the AK47 if you can find one. I agree that the 350 Legend is best where straight walls are required.

    Love your channel, the straightforward presentation of information, and cutting through the crap. Speaking of the 30-30 Winchester I really like your video about it and the rifles chambering it. Would really like to see a video about the Marlin 336 if possible. Keep up the good work and spreading the truth.

    Thank you. Look back through my videos. I discussed the Winchester and Marlin rifles a couple of years ago, along with the venerable 30-30 cartridge. My first centerfire rifle purchase was a 1964 Marlin 336T chambered in 44 Magnum. I've owned a number of very good 336 rifles over the years in their various chambered offerings. The lever rifle remains one of the finest and most efficient, lightweight, woods companions ever made, and the 30-30 (or 32 Special) with it's deep penetrating 170 grain load cannot be beat within 150 yards. While good with cartridges of greater than 2600 feet per second, I consider the 150 grain bullet, with only .225 sectional density, to have marginal penetration at 30-30 velocities. The late Jack O'Connor had the same conclusion. In general, cartridges for deer sized game should have sectional densities greater than .240 for best performance, and the 170 grain @.256 SD does that in spades.

    @@GunBlue490 thank you. I hadn't come across that video yet I will go back and look for it. My first big game rifle was a synthetic stocked Savage 111 in 3006 that I bought on the advice of the guys I first started going hunting with. Didn't take me very long to realize that I was pretty over gunned for the area I was hunting (upstate NY) didn't really enjoy shooting that rifle very much and I liked carrying it and looking at it even less. My go to for years now has been a Marlin 336 with a 16 and 1/4 inch barrel loaded with 170 grain soft points. Any deer I've ever shot with it didn't seem to notice that it was a supposedly week cartridge fired from a short barrel. Greatest gun in cartridge combination for thick woods in my opinion. A lot of new cartridges will come and go and still not do anything really better than the 30-30.

    So how would u compare the 350 to a 44 mag rifle? Would it be an improvement over a 44mag out to 150 yards?

    I really don't think so. The 44 Magnum out of a rifle is a whole different animal all together. The extra barrel length really wake it up.

    The 350 Legend and 44 Magnum are in different velocity class, so they cannot be compared on equal terms. The 44 Magnum is nearly a thousand feet per second slower than the 350 Legend, and its hunting effectiveness drops off the charts after 65 yards, even in rifles. Beyond that range, penetration, energy and trajectory deteriorate uselessly. The 444 Marlin is in the same velocity class as the Legend, but is significantly more powerful in all measurements due to it's far greater bullet weight and sustained velocity. The 350 Legend's attractiveness will be for AR-15 uppers, which is a thinly veiled motive, despite it's offering in bolt rifles. I won't be surprised if Winchester has an AR-15 rifle coming soon if the Legend gains popularity. However, I think they could have done better by simply inventing a new straight wall case of a larger diameter and longer bullet with reasonable recoil levels. Winchester manufacturers ammo and rifles, and does not need to follow the crowd with any standardized case design.

    The reason I ask is many hunters in indiana use the 44mag lever evolution ammo out of a rifle. I have killed deer with mine out to 100yds before with a pass through shot. So I know they are different and cant be compared easily im just wonder if the 350 would be a better choice then the 44mag.

    @@joshhasenour4157 Exactly. I forgot about this conversation but was reminded about it today. I have had two complete pass throughs on deer and another that ended up under the hide all between 60-90 yards with .357 hardcast gas checked 180s out of a 20" Rossi 92. More than one of us in our group have had zero issues plowing through the side plates of multiple hogs with the same cartridge. Federal makes them. People used to and still cleanly kill deer every year with a freaking flintlock patched ball. If an arrow with a flint can do it cleanly so can a properly aimed small caliber smokeless round within reasonable ranges. I will say again, the 44 mag is a much different animal out of a rifle. Paper results are just that. Paper.
