Now imagine this: I was in the 4th grade listening to this album on a portable CD player every morning on my way to school. Having immigrant parents , they had no idea what I was listening to at 9 years old 😂 At that time, I remember writing the lyrics to every song down on paper so I could memorize it. Yes at 9 years old 😂 As I grew older, my perspective of things have changed but it fascinates me that this album in particular continues to give me the same exact feelings it did back then. Excitement. Anxiety. Anger. It’s a thrill ride lol

When I hear MMLP, I feel like "yeah, this is obviously his best album, a true master piece". But when I hear the Eminem show, which is a very different album, I feel exactly the same. I just can't choose, never could and probably never will. And that's the best part of this. My two favorites albums in rap music are from the same artist but don't look the same at all. SSLP I loved. It was funny. This album you could tell he wasn't ready for the success he had. Lucky for us he channeled that anger into this. Makes me wonder how devil's night would of been if he kept it to himself and it wasn't a D12 album. And Eminem show I also loved but like you say different reasons. Encore went south but they can't all be winners.
“Kim” is actually a prequel to the song “97 Bonnie and Clyde” from his first album At the end you hear him dragging a body over sticks. Same audio from the beginning of Bonnie and Clyde where he explains to his daughter that momma “had an accident”
This album helped me get through my childhood. All of the anger, the emotions, the humor... its like Em channeled all of my frustrations into this album and helped me release it all.

The missing lyrics in I'm Back are "I take seven (kids) from (Columbine)" and they had to be censored even on the explicit version of the album because the shooting was only around a year old (and they didn't have a school shooting every few months like we do now so it was still a huge deal)

That part that was censored out, he said "Columbine". So he was referencing the school shooting that happened in 99'. It was back when school shooting wasnt a regular thing (like it is today sadly), so they censored it out. Also the "stand them in a line" bars was originally a Rakim scheme. Just like The Way I Am chorus melody was him as well.

Brilliant reaction, loved it. You looked so internally stressed during Kim though! Glad you loved Criminal, it's my fave Em track ever.
The main thing separating "hip hop" today to hip hop in the golden era is THE STORYTELLING. Eminem is telling you a story on this classic album. There is a reason why this album is considered his best album ever, why it is Diamond album, why it has sold 25 million in the US alone, and why he won 2 Grammys for this album. It was also controversial upon its release. I remember a couple of my friends said they had to sneak the album into their parents house with fear of being out of pocket $22 dollars. $22 was a lot for a CD back then. If their parents found it, they would throw the album away. Bro, you should review Redman's "Muddy Waters" album. If you didn't appreciate Redman before, you will after hearing that album.
@jamesthegr8732
Жыл бұрын
The first 3 Redman albums and the 1at red and meth collab album are all great albums, Eminem says Redman is his favorite rapper. If it wasnt for Redman first two albums doing good, and Warren G smashing the charts with Regykate, there was talk of Def Jam closing back in the day.

Great video, I grew up with this album at 11 years old back in 2000. (My cousin had let me listen to SSLP before as well) - I was gripped by Eminem in that first era of albums... also just a fun side note - Mark & Jeff Bass were heavily working with Eminem on the production of SSLP + MMLP. A lot of the guitar riffs were by the bass brothers here.... This album was also heavily recorded in Amsterdam.
This is definitely going down as one of the best albums ever. Christopher Reeves was an actor who played superman in the 1979 movie. He had an accident that left him full body paralyzed. Em is a big comic book fan so when he jokes about CR, that's his own messed up way of showing love 😆
@KPITGangsta
9 ай бұрын
I thought it stemmed from Christopher Reeves being upset and disgusted when he found out Eminem found inspiration in him. Christopher also said that if that was true he has wasted his life if he inspired somebody like that. After that, Eminem started just putting him in songs more just because, lol.
Been searching for someone reacting to my fav album for long time. This shit is HARD
2:20 Dre said he was on the phone with Em and had this beat playing in the background, and Eminem asked what that was, Dre said he was just messing around, so Eminem said "Send me that shit" and the rest is history lol Eminem came up with the chorus within a minute Dre said

Enjoyed listening to the album again along with your reactions. Subscribed! In my opinion, Eminem's best albums are his first 3 in the order they were released. The slim shady lp is my favourite eminem album and is in my top 5 hip hop albums of all time. Keep up the cool content my man! Just about to listen to your reaction to the slim shady lp now as i noticed you just uploaded it a month ago. I'm gonna look through your other videos too. I hope you've already done illmatic.
this is my fav reaction video! I like how you understand and your open minded about the lyrics and the up bringing, sometimes some people are little more cookoo than others!
This is the most groundbreaking, unapologetic, and raw rap album of all time. Especially for it’s time, no one has ever heard anything like it. It really turned rap music on its head and it’s subject matter was so controversial that the genius of it was lost on so many people.
You took me back with this one lol. Good reaction bruh. I still have this cd, but honestly, I don't return to this album, because I'm a man of a certain age now, and some of the subject matter and pop culture references just don't hit like they did initially. Glad you enjoyed it, however. From a production standpoint, cringe and shock value content aside, the sonics provided by Dr. Dre and Eminem & the Bass Brothers, along with Mark The 45 King for "Stan," are excellent. "Kim" is the only song on here that has iffy production. The Real Slim Shady is goofy sounding in hindsight, but at the time this album came out, that production by Dre fit Em's subject matter perfectly. Back then, you still needed radio singles to set up your album, so that song worked. Loved your reaction to "Who Knew" and "I'm Back" rhyme schemes and the wordplay on "Remember Me?" (Sidenote: according to Sticky Fingaz, that song was meant to be on The Chronic 2001, which sonically, makes perfect sense). Even if I can't get down with the subject matter, I'll always appreciate how dope Em was with his pen and new rhyme schemes. "The Way I Am" rhyme patterns, which Nas just borrowed for a song on his last album, and Lil' Kim used on one of her albums years ago, is just elite. Em was bonkers in that era as an emcee. Dre guided and crafted him into an actual artist by '99, but you could still hear remnants of his earlier underground battle rapper phase on songs like "Amityville." Anyhow, good reaction bruh. Looking forward to the upcoming MF Doom, Ghostface Killah and The Fugees reactions you've got lined up.
I'm new to your channel but I love the way you react. You look like you're about to cry because of how dope it is and how much you've missed out on. This was 14 year old me when I played this shit so much my walkman scratched it to death. Always glad to see newcomers to this album. It really is a musical experience like no other.

Portugal here for the Goat Eminem always since day one and forever. Thanks for reacting to this legendary masterpiece. Salutes and respect.
This is in my top 5 albums. It's soooo good.
Christopher Reeves played Superman n the old school movies. He had a horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. It’s ironic that he used to play the Superman and had such a fate
Classic! I still have this album from when it first dropped. 🔥🔥 Yeah, I'm old AF. 🤣🤣
Great reaction! Now that they’re streaming you should do a lot of de la soul songs/albums. If you like tribe called quest you’ll like them. They were the inspiration for so many groups including Outkast
I forgot how good this was! No skips Kill You and Criminal were my favs just displaying Ems superior lyrical and cadence ability.
Such a classic! Em was so over the top on this one lol After Stillmatic next three you should do Ghostface-Supreme Clientelle A Tribe Called Quest-Midnight Marauders Nas- Life is Good
you’re the only black youth on youtube (near my age) that don’t think Em is corny Been waiting for this shit since I first started watching 2 years ago
@Vnov93
11 күн бұрын
My personal opinion, the people that consider him "corny" haven't listened to his first 2 albums, and are judging him off of his more goofy hit singles like "The Real Slim Shady" or "Without Me". There's nothing corny about the SSLP or MMLP. They are dark.
I first heard the first bars of "May I Have Your Attention Please -" at a club when the LP first came out. Everyone *flooded* the dance floor. You couldn't even get the LP that week in the record store, it was sold out. I got it two weeks later. If you emailed someone with the lyrics of "Stan", everyone knew the reference ... within a month. Someone played Dido's "thank you" in a bar; the girls in the table next to you would loudly express DISAPPOINTMENT that it was not "Stan". Everyone remembers when this album came out.
Man, its interesting how we work.. my first time seeing your channel pop up and i actually committed through the entire album with you bro ;) After seeing your reaction i could appreciate how you saw songs for what they were, respectin the message etc. I grew up on Em, so it's always fun to watch people react to new tracks like these. I just wanted to mention around 1:02:30 on Kim, despite having heard that song many times, that last time yelling bleeed made me get emotional.. can be hard to pinpoint what draws those emotions but it was kind of a powerful moment watching your reaction. Because i feel like i can tell you laugh to express many things, nervousness, displeasure? so even though you were laughing you were also shocked i think.. maybe thats what brought me over the edge a bit like damn... this shit... is fucking.. heavy... as a guy who feels a lot, and appreciates it.. it was dope to see your authentic reaction too. There's something bigger at play w reaction channels ya know? lol being able to share the feeling that those songs bring us. they are a part of our history and identity. I'ts validating i guess too, like waiting for that rhyme scheme or part you know is DOPE haha but i should stop there lmao ill peep more of the channel have a good one
Bought this the morning it came out on cassette for my walkman . Shit was insane . When I was bumping his 1st album people roasted me for being into him they only knew the video for my name is. When this came out the whole world got into Eminem not just hip hop heads. I wish you could've seen the shit this album caused at the time. He was public enemy no.1 still can't choose between this or the slim shady lp but these are definitely his best 2 . Loved this reaction some of these album cuts I've not heard in 20 years. Can still rhyme off every bar after all these years.
I remember copping this at midnight on its release date, I must’ve been 20 or 21. I was onto Em early, pre-Dre signing (shout out to Emerson College WERS underground hip hop radio show), and I was instantly hooked, he just flipped lyricism on its head for me. At stores, all I was able to find was the single with Just Don’t Give A Fuck and Brain Damage on the B-side, plus I dubbed 3hree6ix5ive off the radio (“the underground shit that he did with Skam” - one of my favorite all-time Em verses). Hyped him to everyone I knew. Maybe 1 or 2 listened to me. Then like a year later these same people hitting my phone like “did you hear this new white rapper? Hi! My name is….Hi! My name is….”🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ Anyway, glad he blew up and I was right about him, lmao. That Jennifer Lopez shit was WILD lmfao

Can’t forget insane, cold wind blows, and welcome to hell.
Classic, I think if I remember his first 4 albums were all fire 🔥, his first two were on Kelvin scale for heat and still in rotation in my master playlist This one always triply cause I imagined “Stan” was the guy in 97 Bonnie and Clyde and it was just the continuation
Dang I missed it Live Eminem is such a good rapper ! He be saying some wild stuff but I love it ! He spoke a lot of his truth ! When I visited Detroit in Nov 2020 his food truck moms spaghetti wasn’t open yet. I wish it was . Thanks for the reaction of this album. His song toy soldiers was played on the movie Megan recently . I love that song . 2:07

This shit was revolutionary. I miss these days so much.. our whole culture was so much cooler back then.
Loved this!! I was 11/12 when I got this album when it came out, and it changed my life and got me through my childhood. I listen to it to this day. Criminal is a great song. Glad you could see he's humour and raw honest emotion. Kim is one of my favourite songs. It's a piece of art in my opinion.
Mannnnn I remember had my mom buy me this album when I was like 10 and I never heard the whole thing and we were listening to it in the car and the Ken kannif skit came on, top5 most awkward moments with my mom😂

I love it when they say black people dont listen to Em. Love these reactions
It's battle rap on an album but done so artistically and structured perfectly. The lyrics, the sound, the cadence. the whole concept is insane. Eminem is a genius fr..
This album is a masterpiece!!!
While we're all used to Eminem using different voices, and rapping about everything on the planet, this album hit you like a mack truck when it came out. At this point, Em was just starting to become well known, and he was getting compared to Vanilla Ice, and pop stars. You have no idea what it was like to hear these songs for the first time, he had really only used his high pitched nasally voice, and on comes Stan, in which he's rapping in a totally different voice, measured and calm, very serious. That song was like a slap in the face by the time you got to the end, it was amazing. And even The Way I Am, he had never rapped so angrily before, it was startling. He was coming at you with all these different voices and cadences, it was hard to believe he had just made an album even better than the first one. Imagine trying to live up to that hype, and not only delivering, but completely blowing away The Slim Shady LP. That's when I knew this guy had the potential to be one of the all time greats. And he is.
This shit came out the year before I graduated high school and it's still wild in 2023.
True story: my mum knew I loved Eminem so she went out and bought this album for me and gave it to me as a present after school. Unlike Eminem - I love my ma! ❤
This is my FAVORITE album of all time!! Glad you enjoyed it!!

I really enjoyed this brother u care about the music

Cool to see you react to this album. Recommendation: Jay-z - Originator '99 (Nigga What, Nigga Who). It features Jaz-O and your girl Amil. Classic song. Also, Em's 1st album Infinite is worth listening to too.
@34:50 that’s when he mentioned the first mass school shooting (Columbine High School Shooting, which took place 1 year before this album dropped 1999) Interscope Records had him censored the lyrics because they were getting upset about it, so it’s censored on all versions.

Great reaction!
Aww puffy IS Sean. Lol idk how i came across this, but I'm glad i clicked it. I'm happy to listen to this album, and i love seeing a younger cat getting hip to it for the first time. I remember when it came out back in like 8th grade i bought the cd that day and listened to it over and over till i knew all the songs lol you're clearly studying hip hop and that's what's up...oh yeah i just now noticed j. Cole in the background. Hopefully you've heard coast contra. That's what you should review if you haven't yet. Their lyrics are really fkn dense tho lol it's not for the weak lol
dude i’m 33 and have been listening to this album since it came out, and somehow never put the “Ike” part together, never occurred to me it was an Ike Turner joke.
