The WiC 64! - Loading games directly from the Internet super fast - Building and testing

Ғылым және технология

In this video I build and then test the WiC 64 wireless interface device which lets you load games and programs directly from the internet at super fast speed.
Other wifi-modem solution have limited features and can only access BBS'es for the most part.
This however, can load software from the internet.

Very cool way to not just get a C64 online, but also significantly shorten load times. Fascinating!

Hello from France, Tommy (Tommy’s your first name, right?)! Thank you so much for this interesting presentation of the wic64 and thank you in general for your awesome videos. I also enjoy seeing the beautiful sceneries from Norway which you include in every show. Keep up your incredible and very much appreciated contribution to the retro-computing community! Kind regards, Thierry

Ever since I got my FujiNet adapter for my Atari 800XL, I've been trying to find something similar for my C64. It looks like I found it! Thanks for the video!

I made a two player artillery duel clone for that device called Multorio (it's available in the Portal under "Online games") and a remote BASIC compiler that sends your program to a server, compiles it there and gets the result back from the server. It's quite fun to work with these devices, albeit some things are still in their early stages and it shows. One of mine died recently, because a capacitor on the ESP32 shorted, which also burned out a diode on the WiC's PCB. I replaced the diode and flashed a new ESP, no big deal. But I'm not the first one with this exact failure, so it might be a general problem with either the quality of some ESPs or the voltage supplied to the ESP. Just in case your WiC starts to smoke as well, that's what it might be...

Nice :) Hope it wont happen to me. I guess the possibilities are endless if you know how to program and can utilise it fully. Hopefully that portal will be expanded with more stuff.

This is very cool. They have recently developed something similar for the Coleco Adam computer, wifi adapter named FujiNet that lets you connect to a site to download game directly to the old computer's memory.

This is super cool. I wonder if you could have the thing load a directory on a local server of games. It wouldn't be so difficult to have a simple ftp or http server locally that it could access the applications. I have an SD2IEC that works pretty well but some applications do take a dump on me but what can you do. The other thing I wonder is, could I use this to also PUT information on a local network? Maybe save some data files here and there, nothing to complex. Hmmm.... This is super cool.

For future reference: Almost all HTTP servers are case sensitive since they usually map directly to an underlaying *ix filesystem. The hostname is never case sensitive unless the client is bugged.

I would say many, not almost all. But if mapped to a *ix file system, that is true.

Will this firmware also work with : C64-WiFi-Modem-User-Port by Sven Petersen? From what I can see the hardware design is very similar and if my understanding is correct all of the magic is done in the firmware/ software?

  • @michaelcarey

I don't think it will. The Sven Petersen modem uses the C64 "RS232" serial in/out on the User Port, basically emulating an old-world telephone modem. The Wic64 uses a parallel connection between the C64 and the ESP8266, this is how it can load data so quickly.

Maybe some of the glitches you experienced are due to a heavily modded C64 (the screens show you have jiffydos kernal rom and maybe some other custom ICs).But a great device nonetheless!

A really great project. However, this device cannot make a Pi1541 or an sd2iec obsolete as it doesn't handle full disk images. In other words, programmes loading several files in a row would need additional treatment to be supported by Wic64. Also you can't create backups of you old diskettes and then transfer them towards the net. I hope I see this right.
