Hi Primrose - I tutor both Maths and Science (Foundation, Higher and A Level Physics and Maths) - I just had to say that you are a truly wonderful human being, having taken the time to devote yourself to provide a free source of revision for science and maths to many head scratching students across the land. It has proved a reliable source to help tutor and point my students in for their revision - not sure where you found the time to do all of this - but many many thanks form the tutoring community as well!! Excellent work!!

5:45 Here are the reasons as to why these are useful -cavity wall insulation: stops energy loss through walls -double glazing: layer of argon gas between layers is a poor conductor of heat, therefore keeps warm air from escaping -loft insulation: reduces heat lost from roof -carpet: traps heat in fibres -curtains: prevent heat and air entering/escaping windows -draught excluders: prevent cold air entering through door and stop heat escaping -jacket around hot water tank: reduces heat lost

Hi Primrose Kitchen, you are teaching energy using the idea of forms. The new way is to teach energy using stores and pathways (see IOP). With this approach sound, light, electricity and heat and not forms of energy, but pathways for energy to move from one store to another. It has taken me a while to get my head around this new approach! Whilst seeming more complicated (doesn’t a photon of light have energy), I can understand the rationale for the new approach. It gets pupils (and teachers) to think more about the physical processes underlying changes rather than resorting to energy changes as the explanation. Energy analysis should be used as an accounting tool (is something possible) and not as a way of explaining things. Good example is explaining what happens when you add another light bulb in a series circuit. Using energy analysis you might say that the light bulbs dim because the energy gets shared between the bulbs. It would be more valuable to say that the electrons are experiencing twice the resistance through the bulbs and it, therefore, takes twice as much time for the electrons to move through the heating element in the bulbs. No need to mention energy.
