Pretty amazing seeiing that little boy on the drums, and realising he was the most extreme rock and roller of all time - at least in terms of his lifestyle.

By the way.......Keith Moon at this recording session was stoned! If you know more about Keith, you'll understand that. Pete Townshend (lead guitar) and John Entwistle (bass). This was a very early song of The Who, but straight away you can hear that indescribable talent shining through.

The Pistols footage is also interesting because of the achieve nature of the early gigs included with original punks before the spikey hair mob took over. Also, for spotting Siouxsie Sioux & Viv Westwood in the crowd, well, Westwood (dancing) at the side of the stage. Also, superfan and Sex Shop assistant (the late) Jordan.

Even the Pistols would concede that The Who’s original was best. Funnily enough I first heard this song exactly 40 years ago, i.e. in the spring of 1983. My brother had compiled a ‘Mod’ cassette and this was on it.

I always liked the genuine passion / anger in The Sex Pistols version & Punky vibe of the 🎸 of Steve Jones. The Who 🇬🇧 original a bit to polished but certainly laudable.

A lot of people in the music industry sort of thought of early Who, at least to some degree, as punk before punk. In the mid sixties their sound was very unique and much simpler than most of their later stuff. I love them throughout their career.

For me, the clear winner is The Who and not just by a little bit! 😋 Don't get me wrong, I do like the Sex Pistols original material, like "Nevermind the Bollocks" is a great album track after track.. but in my humble opinion Substitute doesn't work for them and you know, The Who were one of the greatest bands ever to grace the Earth.. they're just in a different league! There's no one quite like The Who. My two all time favourites are The Who and Led Zeppelin. Loved them both ever since I was a young teenager twenty years ago. I did listen to the Sex Pistols growing up too, I remember a kid in school called Kevin gave me the "Never mind the Bollocks" CD, however when it comes to punk my favourite band is the very much underrated Stiff Little Fingers. 😊

The Pistols footage is them playing live of course, but the audio is the demo version (it was never recorded properly for release) that appeared on the 'Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle' soundtrack. Now,it was played "live" in the studio at the time with no overdubs, but subsequently for the 'Swindle' project, Jones & Cook overdubbed guitar & drums (probably bass too) on to the original demo track.

Fun Fakt: not long after "substitute" was recorded the Who booted Daltrey out of the band! When the 45 was released it peaked at #4 and the record company FORCED the Who to quickly rehire Daltrey!

Not true. They kicked him out of the band because he kept hitting people....mostly Pete. The record company offered to set him up as a solo artiste with a back up band. Roger said he knew then if he was going to "make it" it was going to be with The Who....they were his best chance.....the best line up. So he rejoined with the promise that from then on he'd be, "Peaceful Perce" and no more throwing his weight around. Although on one occasion thereafter he did knock Pete Townshend out when Townshend called him a, "dirty little cunt" and in a rage attacked and swung at Daltrey with his guitar. Read the biography, the fights between him and Townshend are as legendary as Moon's lunacy.

The Sex Pistols owned this. No one could harness and channel that rage into a focussed, spiteful, staccato song of defiance like John Lydon. The Who sound like they're happy to be doormats.

In 1966 a 14 year old Gary Moore ( you should check out some of Gary's amazing catalogue) saw The Who in Belfast & he said just watching them he felt like he had been in a fight & that The Who were the first punk band? It's a pretty interesting point of view.

The original was a typical 60's Rock'n'Roll song but what The Who didn't know was that it had a "dormant" Punk vibe, so much so that when I heard the Pistols' cover I thought it was an original, until I saw who the song writers were. 🙂

I love the Who and the song "Substitute" in general. Though I really can't decide which version I like more. May still have to go with the original, but mannnn did the Pistols ever knock out an amazing version of it too. Sort of like them both equally in different ways, but I'll give it to the Who just slightly cause it's such a great song in general. The Pistols were a much needed kick in the ass though in 1976; even Pete Townshend agreed to that. He was a big fan of the Pistols. Worth pointing out too that each of these versions are 10 years apart. The Who's version is 1966 and the Pistols is '76; a lot changed about music over that period. Punk Rock was purposely playing off rock'n'roll early characteristics and hyperbolizing them as a reaction to the stale state of rock by that point in the mid 70s. So naturally it was more aggressive, louder, faster, etc. It was taking those early traits (started by bands like the Who) and just exaggerating them. Edit: okay.. to conclude: The Who wins slightly. I agree with both of you here. Sidenote: love this idea for a reaction channel too. Can't think of any other channel doing the comparison thing. Great concept.

  • @extremecheese

Well this isn't really fair as the sex pistols version has been sped up - the original is in 'A' whereas the rock and roll swindle version is tweaked to 'Bb' - giving it a much more 'punchy - fast' sound. But that does not take away the fact that Glen Matlock actually provides a better bassline than Entwistle's original - Glens line is bouncy, edgy, reminiscent of "I saw her standing there" and basically adds an element of careless fun to the track. Yes I love them both, but the winner is the sex pistols.

It blows my mind that Keith Moon had hardly ever used hi-hats on his drum kits! I had to do 1 single band practice without them as a drummer for the first band I'd joined in the late 80's (after the pedal on the stand had snapped and my Big Bro had taken it with him for that week in order to weld it), and man did I HATE not having any! 😂 Good job by the S*x Pistols, however, I've always been fond of The Who's original for some reason, so they are _my_ winners 😊 For another fun performance, maybe also check out 'A Quick One (While He's Away)' , the live version from _The Rolling Stones' Rock 'n Roll Circus_ movie! 😀👍

To me, ALMOST every time, it's the version I personally heard first that I prefer. Usually that means the original, but for instance I far prefer the Beatles Twist and Shout over the original (Shirelles?) but I liked the Zutons, so Amy Winehouse's Valerie just sounds weird to me although most people would have the same reaction I mentioned about the original Twist and Shout. Maybe just depends what you're most used to. There are exceptions, but not sure I can think of one off the top of my head

However, the Pistols version was a demo originally (that's not live despite the footage) before overdubs were added for inclusion on the Great Rock 'n' Roll soundtrack. But the Who live were just as Mental if not more "Destructive " Keith Moon made about 25 pounds in profit in 1978 ,while on Tour ! Smashing up Hotel Rooms , came at a price ! That was the year Keith died of an Alcohol replacement tablet overdose !What the doctor who advised Keith to take this, beggars belief , as if Moon would stick to the right amount !!! The vid of the Pistols is pre "Sid Vicious "Matlock was not a bad player ! Sid was clueless, bless him . Sid also did a cover of "My Way " which IMO is a lot better than Mr Sinatras ! "Rory Gallagher " watched the Pistols perform when they were on Tour in the USA ! ( They were not liked in most States ) Rory released the Album "Photo Finish " in 1978 the track "Brute Force and Ignorance " is the result of said gig ! Which is a superb track , which is Ace Live !
