The Who - I Can't Explain - Guitar Cover - Rickenbacker 360/12c63

I Can't Explain Guitar Cover
Recorded with a Rickenbacker 360/12c63 and a Vox AC15 into a Shure SM57.
This song exemplifies the British Invasion sound of the 1960s with it's jangly Rickenbacker 12 string guitar, tight vocal harmonies, and raucous guitar solos. It has been said that Jimmy Page played along with Pete to "strengthen up" the sound, but only one guitar part is audible on the recording. Pete would have used his 1964 Rickenbacker 1993 Rose Morris to play the rhythm and solos.

Love the sound of rickenbacker pure 60s sound who agrees
One of my favorite guitar solos of all time! Thanks.
Nailed those solos! I imagine this would have taken intense repeated listening. That syncopation is spot-on and no easy feat. I appreciate how true to original you feel it, down to precise hand attitude.

The solos in this song are pure Pete! Playing them on the Ric 12 makes it much more difficult!

I always imagined the solo had pick switching , but apparently not.
The BEST cover of this song on KZread. You have all the right gear, the right setup and it's the most accurate rendition. You also have that "fire" that Townshend himself had. Brilliant job all the way through.

According to Page, he only played rhythm guitar on some of the takes. His contribution is either buried deep in the mix or did not make the final version of the song, The solo is all Pete.
Perfect! Helped me a lot! My band is playing this song, my generation and won't get fooled again... The Who rocks! Can't wait for their show in Brasil

Awesome jangle.
Deceptively simple song but you managed to inject the early Who vibe! Love your Rickenbacker! Thanks for posting!
What a fantastic authentic sound. How can anyone dislike this vid?
Really great, awesome cover Thank you
I need to give you an A+ on this. Thanks for posting
That Ric sounds absolutely beautiful
Spot on. One of my favorite songs Love Ric 12 strings
Most likely the best video on KZread and then a tutorial for one of the best songs ever. Thanks a lot!!! :-)
That's one of my favourite who songs of all time great cover love the sound you got on your rickenbacker 360c63 12
Love the guitar, the shirt, the song, the wall behind you, the jeans, the keyboards, the floor ( i can't explain ), the video, etc...
Love this song!! Fab cover!!😎
Amazing cover with the classic 12 string Rickenbacker! I'm a guitar beginner that loves the Who, and your technique it's just perfect! I can just thank you for this awesome video! Subscribed
phenomenal!
Those solos are very nice! They chime like a bell.
WOW ! What a lovely Rick and those toaster p/u 's sound amazing!
Wow, I am impressed !!!
amazing
Awesome job,dude! The tone is super crispy.
Nice job, almost perfect... it's always better to slightly lag than lead the drums/bass when playing the guitar part...not always easy to do. Townshend's stuff seems so easy to play, but when you try to duplicate it exactly, you'll see that it's not so simple. That's why I rank him way higher than just just a good rhythm guitarist.
Everything about this is fantastic! The guitarist was great, the song and most certainly the guitar was perfect

The Ric 12 has a fantastic sound! I love how Pete showcased the power of an electric 12 on a song like this!
loved that
Love it! They don't make tunes like that anymore. Saw The Who in Hyde Park in June 2015. One of the best gigs I've ever been to! Would've been even better if Keith Moon and John Entwistle were there
Great job on the solo's !!

Lp Mit Edgar Titansteini Why the question? He is playing this song on a 12 string Rickenbacker 360/12 circa 1963. Pete Townsend used 12 string Rick’s to help fill in the sound since he was the only guitarist where all the R and B bands like the Stones and Kinks had two.
great stuff,thumbs up.
Damn fine cover, old boy! Spot on!
Great !
Great rendition.
Amazing tone!
That solo tho! Post more Who covers please!
Yeah Baby! Superbly done! Back in the day, we (probably the original Who Nerds) were convinced the lead breaks on Can't Explain were not played by Pete Townsend. We felt Pete, an incredible RHYTHM guitarist, lacked the necessary skill. We believed Jimmy Page played lead on Can't Explain. The backup vocals were NOT sung by the Who, but by the 'Ivy League'.

Nice - almost nailed that solo!
One advantage of the narrow neck of a Rick is that you will have no trouble rapping your thumb up there on the low notes (bass strings) to either play or mute them.

nice guitar
You're one of a small handful of people on here with a Rick 12 string who has it EQ'ed correctly Kudos. Most people seem to have the treble cranked... this is how this guitar is supposed to sound.
@mattiboo
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for noticing! At first, I too cranked the treble on a Ric 12, since all of the articles I read talked about how much treble the 12 string had. After listening closely to recordings of the Ric 12, this one in particular, I realized that boosting the lower mids around 1kHz gives the Ric that classic sound that accents the natural treble of the guitar while adding some substance!

No problem. A lot of videos on youtube are almost impossible to watch due to the ice-picky tone. I watched some of your other videos and there's a clear evolution in the sound quality. Rick toasters are tricky pickups anyway, and the 'vintage' wiring has a capacitor that actually cuts the bottom end out of the bridge pickup if you can imagine. The guitars actually sound much better with that cap omitted, but then it wouldn't be 'vintage style' anymore. Vox amps are just as tricky as the guitar itself. I like the normal (non top boost) high input with the cut control at about 3:00 with bright guitars, then just turn the amp up halfway or more... GREAT sound. It's hard to duplicate the tone of a lot of these old recordings though... especially the Beatles tone. George Martin was as much responsible as John and George were for the tone of the guitars on those early recordings... LOTS of compression... listen to John's 325 in "I wanna hold your hand." I don't think anyone has successfully duplicated that sound. Great videos though, you're a strong player with some nice gear.
Wish I could do this...been playing guitar for 32 years but can't barre. :(
Nice job with the solos :).

Best version on web: Guitar sound and technique are pretty close to the orig!!!
You know what this song needs? Pete Townshend smashing the shit out of his guitar and whatnot!!!
I'd love to see Walk Idiot Walk played on this guitar.
Can you do 'The Kids Are Alright'? - same guitar - same vibe! :)
The playing (especially on the solos) is really good. One suggestion on watching a lot of your videos is to up the midrange on your amplifier setting. The tone is a tad brittle. If you increase the mid you'll get some really good chime to complement the playing.

Thanks for the advice! I really enjoyed your cover of Won't Get Fooled Again. Sounds spot on!
Could you do "The Kids Are Alright" cover?
Ok it's been almost 4 years now, I'm sure you have " Substitute " down cold by now. Yes, please ?
Fantastic -- can you add some early KINKS?
I've always wanted a 12 string. What was the price on that one?
How did you go about learning the solo? They sound great!
@mattiboo
5 жыл бұрын
I did it by ear! Listening to the record at a slower speed helps.
how much was the guitar
Why Don't you make a tutorial of this song you do it great lad
I think the only thing that plays along with Pete's guitar is Perry Ford's piano. Even that's a little faint in the mix.
Please do '' The Kids Are Alright '' or '' Much too Much''
Can you post a slowed version of the last solo?

You can use the speed function under the "gear" icon to slow down the video to half and quarter speed!
What amp settings are you using? How can I get my guitar to sound like this when I play the song?
@mattiboo
6 жыл бұрын
I used a Vox AC15 with the treble on 2/3, bass on 1/3, and gain on 1/2. Pete used an electric 12 string Rickenbacker to record "I Can't Explain", so it may be difficult to get this exact sound with a 6 string.
Decades ago I always thought this was played on some kind of electric piano or something.
Got a feeling inside (Can't explain) It's a certain kind (Can't explain) I feel hot and cold (Can't explain) Yeah, down in my soul, yeah (Can't explain) I said (Can't explain) I'm feeling good now, yeah, but (Can't explain) Dizzy in the head and I'm feeling blue The things you've said, well, maybe they're true I'm gettin' funny dreams again and again I know what it means, but Can't explain I think it's love Try to say it to you When I feel blue But I can't explain (Can't explain) Yeah, hear what I'm saying, girl (Can't explain) Dizzy in the head and I'm feeling bad The things you've said have got me real mad I'm gettin' funny dreams again and again I know what it means but Can't explain I think it's love Try to say it to you When I feel blue But I can't explain (Can't explain) Forgive me one more time, now (Can't explain) I said I can't explain, yeah You drive me out of my mind Yeah, I'm the worrying kind, babe I said I can't explain
care to share the vox's amp settings for this?
@mattiboo
6 жыл бұрын
The Rickenbacker has fairly low output pickups, so the channel volume (gain) was on about 1/2 or 2/3, the treble on 2/3, bass on 1/2, touch of reverb, and master volume to taste.
this guy has anchors on his shirt AND pants!

Nice Guitar, Cute Outfit Did Your Mom Buy That For You That Too ?
Did you know that Record Producer Shel Talmy wanted Jimmy Page to play the guitar on this song, and Pete Townsend refused to give up ax duties to Jimmy Page?
Who keeps your Rick "in tune"? They were a dog to keep playable. Helps to know a luthier or guitar tech I guess.

I keep it in tune! I haven't had much trouble with the 360/12C63, but both the 325s go out of tune very quickly when playing them.
@kidsworldstorytime4885

Easy to tune. Use a tuner..String pairs E, A, D, G all tuned one octave apart. B, and E string pairs are tuned to same octave like a normal guitar. It's not that much harder than a normal guitar. Putting new strings on is another matter...hahahaha.
I need me a ric
Amp Settings?
@mattiboo
8 жыл бұрын
The amp was set to have about 3/4 treble, 1/4 bass, volume set to get a clean sound, and just a tad of reverb. Most of the sound you are hearing can be credited to the compression, EQ, and plate reverb added by some Garageband and Waves plugins. For the EQ, I cut out the high frequencies from 2kHz to 20kHz with a slight curve, boosted the frequencies around 1kHz, and boosted the frequencies below 200Hz.
I don't have rick 12 string (can't explain) Don't have an amp(can't explain)
