I thought the old Whizzer bikes were 2 stroke guess not. I was just reading about the 70-74 Sabb Sonett and the 1.7L Ford Taunus V4 engine used. It was bigger than the previous 1.5 & 1.6L engines but was severely de tuned to meet 70s emissions crackdowns. So the 1.7L didn't make any more HP than the other 2....Using lower compression was one main way they detuned them. Probably also detuned by using smaller carburetor. It said other 1.7L Taunus engines modified for racing were making 200+hp at the time. I'm not sure if they also used a smaller cam in the Sonett or did any intake & exhast restricions or used a catalytic converter. But since the engine is small & easy to work on. It looks like you could easily get over 100hp for cheap. If it doesn't have a small cam in it. You could research carburetor size & cylinder head porting & get a bigger AM carb or dual carb setup, if they purposely used a small one. I'm thinking with DIY ported polished better flowing heads & milled for higher compression ratio, switch to E85 by going to 30% bigger jets You could cheaply get over the 100hp mark. The E85 with milled/ higher compression heads alone would make the majority power increase but might as well port the heads while they're off. With it being such a lightweight car 150hp plus some extra torque would make it a zippy little fun to drive car. I like the uniqueness & style of it plus it looks simple to work on, I think Japan 🇯🇵 got the Mazda RX7 & Datsun 240Z from the Saab Sonett. If I had the money I'd rather have a restomod Sonett than an RX7 or 280zx

2:59 I think this bike should be restored, but at the same time, be restored to full functionality, while keeping the same "look" as the original, but without worrying about 100% accuracy or completeness. Just make it "good enough" at least for now.

Do you have the information for ignition you put in to replace the points? I’m running into the same issue you had.

Yes actually! They're called "Universal Electronic TRANSISTORIZED Ignition Ignitor MODULES" that I got off of Amazon for like $15. Obviously I can't say for certain if it'll work since the engine's not ready to run yet. However I do have a really nice strong blue spark not when I spin the engine over.
