I know right? Jack White also wrote everything for the White Stripes. So people who don't Meg's drumming just don't like Jack's writing style/ sonic choices. They are a garage-rock band first and foremost, never forget that. (No hate to the video creator, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but man I wish you could open your mind a bit and realize Meg's drumming is the glue to this band)

Sorry for torturing you. Back when these requests were made, we didn't know how much you'd be irritated by Meg's drumming. Jack is actually a drummer himself and he taught her to play the drums because his artistic vision for the White Stripes was that he wanted that child-like, amateurish element. He's a very competent musician but loves the raw, unfiltered sound of broken pawnshop gear and nostalgia. Jack has also done a lot for the resurgence of vinyl with his Third Man Records. But it has become quite clear by now that the White Stripes don't resonate with you. 😂 Just imagine if Meg White had a band with Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) doing atonal Frank Zappa covers.... As a side note, there is a documentary called "It Might Get Loud" where Jimmy Page, Jack White and the Edge talk about their lives and music. They even jam a bit and teach each other some iconic riffs. It's very well done and recommended viewing material for any musician. I'm convinced you'd enjoy it a lot.

This is honestly so comedic, you should tell this to the Grammy this album won for best alterative music album and the nomination for album of the year. Also to the 100 of millions of plays The White Stripes have. Also to the sold out tours including selling out Madison Square Garden.

I love the White Stripes, but Grammys and records sold doesn't necessarily correlate to good music. There are A LOT of people who love Jack White but hate Meg White's drumming, understandably, becuase she's not very good on the drums. Obviously he can't get over that, which isn't surprising being a bass player who has a relationship with the drummer in keeping a song's tempo.

Cardi B got nominated for a Grammy award for album of the year in 2019 and also she won best hip hop album of the year in 2019. Also to the billions of plays Cardi B has. She had 213 concerts in 3 years while the white stripes had 305 in 7 years. So what are we talking about here? Is Cardi B better than The White Stripes by your logic? All this stuff about awards and selling tickets... Don't get me wrong, I love The White Stripes and hate Cardi B, I just wanted to take a shit on your flawed illogical comment.

Who cares if she dont maintain the tempo, like who gives a f***. You know what she can do, she can rock the f up, and get emotions out of ya and thats all what an artist needs to do. So who cares if she slows down, thats part of their beauty, the raw, unpolished sound. And both of them as a team get to ya, and make you actually feel something, and thats art. So, out of tempo? Slows down? Who cares????

I have played with click and with a drummer that is so locked to a tempo that I feel irritated. It is not human for me. Funny how different we are. I loved the reaction. Keep up the good work.

I have an explanation. They never rehearsed and didn't use setlists and Jack (guitarist/vocalist) told Meg (drummer) to stop practicing so she couldn't get better and so they could stay the same way. Also I'm not saying I don't like Meg, I think she's an awesome drummer, but Jack's new drummer is better (because of my point above). Well technically he's had two different drummers and the current one is Daru Jones. And I have a request. It's ball and biscuit this song BUUUUTTTTT live 2022 glastonbury. (he got his new drummer in 2012 so don't worry it's not the same drummer.)

I counted this and I actually think you were off tempo a few times in your criticism, not that she wasn't as well. I can hear her speeding up twice, but she goes back fairly quick. She def didn't "slow down and speed up six times in one minute". But sometimes I've listened to their live stuff and jack will do sped up playing too and she always seems to catch up pretty well. I think your anger at her style has made you hate this music lol. I don't know much of your stuff but I'm guessing you hate punk and garage rock because of the less precise nature. I play classical piano but I think it's good sometimes to relax about time signatures. You don't fuck to a metronome.

I love the White Stripes and love that song but your reaction about the drumming had me in stitches. It's been no secret since 1997 that Meg White is not a good drummer. You've got to ask yourself why would she be in a band such as the White Stripes? Jack White once said that he loves the child-like quality of her drumming and it fitted in with their garage rock blues attitude. Jack White is also heavily influenced by lots of blues artists in the early 20th century. Most of them didn't keep good time and were even out of tune.

Whats ironic is Meg probably won't ever play again, or make public music because she was getting the same criticism of her drumming, even at their peak, by Rock media. Even though they were extremely popular. Which is fine if someone doesn't prefer the sound. We all listen to music for different reasons. But her drumming has a place. It reminds me of like some sort of new age punk rock. Where techincality is almost irrelevant, and its based purely on feeling and the emotion it elicits. Imperfection isn't merely accepted, they seek it out. Down to their color schemes, to they way the play music, its built on a foundation of simplicity and imperfection. And finding new sounds and expressions within the rigid bounds of that simplicity. I absolutely love her drumming and how it perfectly compliments Jacks play style and how he rarely performs a song the same way twice. And trust me, I love prog rock, metal, all of it. And sure, she could keep beat more precise, do more drum fills. They could add more bass guitars, keys and strings into their music. Jack is absolutely talented enough. But that then takes away the simplicity. And simplicity has its place. I can search on KZread and find 100's of virtuoso artists playing instruments to perfection. You can't search and find another Meg or White Stripes. And I think thats awesome. And if you get an ear for it, its becomes addictive and immersive in ways more complex rock simply can't. The White Stripes would have simply been another band that came and went, that sorted of blended with whatever rock was popular at the time. But Megs drumming is the foundation of their sound that made them super unique and refreshing. Just a stripped back, raw experience, where the imperfections are an attribute. Techincal doesn't always equate to good, just as simple doesn't always equate to bad. And I respect your opinion, and won't try to change your mind Just want to explain from the perspective of someone who has really enjoyed their music for decades now. I think of it the same way if like someone told me Janis Joplin was terrible because she wasn't always on pitch. When to me, thats what made her stand out, personable and connect to a lot of people. I think its the exact same thing with the Meg, and by extension the White Stripes. At the end of the day music is simply nothing but sounds, you either like it or you don't. But with saying that, I think all styles of rock music has their place while serving a purpose. And the refreshing charm of the White Stripes was undeniable in my opinion. And so unique that you can't find another band to compare them to.

Relax dude - watch them live a bunch, they purposefully speed up, slow down, never play there songs the same way twice. Lyrics get changed, chord structure, songs get mixed together. It’s their style. It’s part of the charm. They’re garage rock on purpose. You’re missing the point.

I had heard at some point that JW actively discouraged MW from practicing. I always liked the fact that she sucked at drums… especially in the beginnings. I get it though… it’s annoying if you aren’t fully committed to accepting this as (The White Stripes) a sort of performance art piece. Like their (or HIS JW’s) commitment to idiosyncratic and obsessive adherence to the “rules” of his art: Use vintage instruments (usually cheap, damaged and or out of tune. He mentioned once that he felt that having to fight with a guitar helped him achieve what it was that he was looking for), vintage recording equipment and techniques. The red and white and eventually black motif is obviously part of it. Having MW play like she doesn’t know how (well… she doesn’t right?), the whole brother/sister husband/wife thing. I don’t know… you get it. It’s about more than the music and the musicianship. It’s about deconstruction or reconstruction of blues standards often mixing in a modern post -industrial angst (listen to “The Big Three Killed My Baby”). When they first emerged it felt like a breath of fresh air… or dirty stanky air… in a good way. Don’t take it too seriously… it’s all tongue and cheek.

Meg never took lessons. She sat down at jacks drum set and started banging and Jack liked her childlike rawness so he said you’re the drummer and she said cool and they became one of the biggest bands ever.

Yeee I'm not sure you get how this band works. My drummer would probably be as frustrated as you are and I get it. I'm a prog rock musician and precision is important to me, but these guys are going for the very opposite of perfection. They are trying to nail down the aesthetic of kids playing music in a basement. They change tempo impulsively and make mistakes because of their lack of focus, but that lack of focus is their root. If somebody did this on drums during a jazz solo or during a precise section of a King Crimson piece it would be inexcusable, but this is the White Stripes. Their aesthetic relies ON their imperfection rather than their imperfection being a detriment to it. I play early Genesis and ELP regularly and I love the White Stripes especially for the things that are annoying you right now. Take a step back as a musician and try to see it through a fresh set of eyes.

The White Stripes were all about the guitars and sloppy drumming. If it makes you feel better, they disbanded about 11 years ago. You can relax now.

OMG! If it bothers you that much then dont play their songs. The drummer was his wife. Jack taught her & had no problem with Meg.The WS were a punk band. Even though Jack has much music skills; people didnt go to see them because of great musicianship. They went to see this band because of their raw emotion.

Poor Jack? lol It was purposeful. With the White Stripes he was seeking imperfection, and seeing what they could create within the rigid lines of simplicity. To them only being a 2 member back, to their color schemes and how they played music, it was all based on simplicity. She could have learned drum fills, he could have incorporated more bass guitars, keys or strings, but they purposely didn't. Thats the charm. Its why you can watch 5 different performances of the same song and they will always sound different. They weren't seeking perfection, or technicality. Jack said it was liberating making music where they had very rigid lines on where they could go with it. But it was all purposeful, whether you like the sound or not. Every band Jack creates have a vastly different sound. The Raconteurs were more textured and technical. The Dead Weather was more bombastic and in your face. And the White Stripes were simplicity and imperfection. And his solo stuff is more experimental. All of those sounds were on purpose. Now you don't have to like it, thats valid. But once you turn your analytical brain off and get an ear for it, it becomes so refreshing, raw and charming.

David is a music critique…. If you don’t like his opinions or if you want your ears tickled then go to any other reaction channel and let them butter your biscuit. Heck, I’m anxiously waiting for the video to drop where he reacts to my volbeat request. You either love them or you hate them. His vocals are hit and miss with everyone. If he ends up not liking it, I’m not gonna get all offended and bash him for his opinion over a song I requested.
