The White Stag in British Folklore & Mythology

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to my channel! Here you'll find folklore from across the British Isles. In this video I finally cover my favourite folk story. The White Stag is a sacred creature from the Otherworld that symbolises great change, or the beginning of a quest. There are many tales and stories of them, and here I start at Bamburgh beach where a Stag was once known to jump from the rocks to escape hunters.

True story. Me and my wife were having a holiday in the highlands of Scotland. It was autumn in 1998. We were returning from a night out in Ullapool to a little cottage we had rented in architibule, a small village on the north west coast. It was dark and we were driving along the hilly coastal road. Then suddenly a white stag raced down a hillside and ran straight across the road. It was lit up by my car headlights. I stopped and a few moments later a whole herd of stags and deer thundered down the hill following the white stag. It was like they were in pursuit. It was one of the most magical and breath taking scenes I have ever witnessed. I will never forget it.

I first kissed the girl who is now my wife and mother to our four daughters in The White Hart pub on White Hart Lane in an area I didn't know well a week or so before Christmas half a lifetime ago. Some years later we moved into our first family home in a new development and our agent spoke of what had been on the site before the build and we realised in talking with him further that it was the very same place. For those of us with eyes to see the unnecessary State execution of the White Stag this week is surely an omen.

Shortly after my first son was born I put him in the baby carry backpack, I took him a hike in a forest in fife near Macduffs cross. We were deep in the woods and I came upon a large tree freshly blown over with its roots sticking up. as I rounded the roots I came face to face with a stag. Close enough to touch we just looked at each other and shared a moment. It calmly just turned and left a deeply profound moment in my life.

I never knew there was a white stag on the Banburgh coast. That's definitely one to visit now! Also what an excellent story at the end. I had a strange encounter like that where i was out hiking and got lost in a wood. It was almost dark and i saw a bat, so i went in the direction it flew, and instead of flying round in a loop like they normally do. It led me to the correct path in the wood.

I fear for the policeman who pulled that trigger in Liverpool, I really do. I would have refused to shoot it if I were them. I fear that great misfortune and even death may come to them! It's more than symbolic, it's a sign of the times we live in. I believe the animal was bringing us news from the otherworld, saying that it's ok now to follow our own path, and not follow the herd. As a Pagan man, I see it as the opening of the time of the great hunt, a time of harvest and prosperity as we enter the cold half of the year. I see it as great hope for the dark half of the year and that we must stay firmly on our path, a Pagan path of love and loving nature. This white stag lives on in the otherworld.

Many years ago in Princeton, New Jersey, there was a beautiful white deer that appeared in a field on the woods' edge of the Institute for Advanced Study. This was such an historic area of the State. I used to watch for him each time I drove home this way. Then he was gone. I heard from a person I worked with, that someone had shot him, even though many hunters say that one is not to kill or eat the meat of such a creature. It was a tragedy. I will never forget the magic of seeing him, nor the loss felt when he was so wantonly, hideously killed. 🙏🏻💔🙏🏻

I like how you brought up the role of the white stag as a messenger and guide in various legends, saints' stories, and the Narnia book. One thing that I was surprised wasn't mentioned was its role in the Harry Potter series, with the stag Patronus serving as a weapon against despair, a form of spiritual protection, and a connection to deceased loved ones. In the last book, it even leads Harry through the forest to find the Sword of Gryffindor and reunite with Ron. After learning about the symbolism behind white stags, I think this was definitely deliberate. I was also touched by your story about seeing a deer and its fawn while in search of a hazel tree. One winter night a few years ago, I walked all the way down a highway to contemplate suicide by a bridge. On my way back home, I was startled to run into a deer right outside of my apartment. Like you and your deer, we just stood there staring at each other, in the snow and the lamplight, for what seemed like a long time; then I cautiously made a wide berth around it and went back inside. I don't necessarily believe in spiritual signs or anything of that nature, but I found it a very touching moment.

There are a lot of strange things happening at the moment. For me, the appearance of the white stag in Bootle and its senseless slaughter is like the appearance of Christ and how He was slaughtered by those He came to save, by His death on the cross. The tyranny the world is going through is being brought on us by dark spiritual forces, as St. Paul put it, our struggle is not just against flesh and blood but against these dark forces. So for me the appearance of the stag - which is such a rare event - represents Christ and spiritual goodness, and is a warning of our need to be vigilant to the significance of what lies behind the imposition of tyranny across the world. The most acute example of this right now is in Australia.

I have lived on our farm in Devon for 20 years and never seen nor heard of any white stags. Then last year in a bottom wild field left fallow as its too wet for much, one afternoon when walking the dog, i saw white shapes through the trees. I assumed it was sheep from next door. But on drawing closer it was 3 magnificent white stags! Brothers I assumed. Each was full grown, perhaps 7 foot tall to the tip of its antlers, maybe taller. I couldn't believe it. Took out my phone and took some photos. I told my wife but dare not put it on social media for fear of local farmers sons who shoot the local deer for meat and money. Looking up the meaning i read they are good luck symbols of change, and also a harbinger of death as messengers from the other world. Later last year my dear parents died within 3 days of each other, as well as other more distant people I knew. I have never seen them since. I have the photos and a video and they are superb and magnificent. Im not sure now whether I want to see one again if they are a portent of death? It remains a huge privilege and an honour as they were a sight to behold and I have my proof. You'll understand why I am reluctant to share my part of Devon as the last one in the paper was found butchered and strung up in a tree and beheaded as a trophy for money obsessive morons. May those people/person pay heavily for such desecration.

If we could perceive more wavelengths, then we would be able to see things that exist that we had never seen before but have always been around us, interacting with us. We measure only the things that we can sense. There is so much more that we can't measure because we don't know it exists to be measured.

So saddened to hear the news today. Just came to this video after seeing your telegram post. A great video indeed, however. What is your opinion on this dark event? Do you think it signals a turning point in that those responsible will pay for their misdeeds? Or do you think this could be a negative sign indicating the overwhelming power and evil we are up against?

  • @hempmaiden

I think if you really look at the symbolism, it only signifies something dark. I urgently want to interpret it as something positive, but I can’t see how. I don’t want to over analyse but it seems too symbolic. I think it can only seem negative.

6:48 this reminds me of the story behind the Jägermeister logo, which depicts a stag with a luminous cross hovering between its antlers. The theme is similar (in that both stories seem to mark a transition between or meeting of pagan and christian beliefs). According to wiki: "This image is a reference to the two Christian patron saints of hunters, Saint Hubertus and Saint Eustace, both of whom converted to Christianity after experiencing a vision in which they saw a Christian cross between the antlers of a stag."

I was in the woods near my hometown last year and I was also looking for some small pieces of wood to practice whittling with. I found this small bare branch that was perfect and on my way back home I spotted a White stag running past with group. I’d never heard of white stags before so I was really amazed.
