The White Queen: Elizabeth of York & Richard III's affair | Part 1 | 1x10

Ойын-сауық

The White Queen (2013) scenes: Richard III wants to seduce his niece to undermine her betrothal to Henry Tudor, his political nemesis and rival claimant for the throne. He thinks the rumours will make Tudor look like a fool, and allow people to see Elizabeth of York and her sister supporting his reign. He is willing to hurt and humiliate his wife in the process, although he later admits he hates himself for doing it...especially because he accidentally fell in love with Elizabeth.
Most historians don't think this salacious rumour was real, but centuries later, the myth still endures: Richard III and Elizabeth of York had an affair. In Shakespeare's plays, Richard III is a perverted uncle that disgusts his niece, Elizabeth of York, whereas more modern tales by Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir and others suggest the interest was mutual to some degree. However, the chances of Richard III seriously considering marriage to a girl he'd made illegitimate would undermine the foundations of his reign by suggesting Edward IV's children might have a claim to the throne after all.

Sighs. This series. I said it once- I will say it A again; Richard III WAS not having A affair with his niece- that would seriously undermine his position.

Absolutely, the show-writers were just sticking to Philippa Gregory's work, and probably hoping that a salacious storyline would increase viewership etc. This particular rumour is still scandalous today, centuries after someone invented it haha

Elizabeth Woodville and her mom also weren't actually practicing witchcraft - a lot of licence is taken with history

@@crazyand2099 confused. we're all talking about the same thing - things people said happen vs. what was actually happening. There were rumors of a passion btwn Richard & Elizabeth same as there were rumors of witchcraft. People SAID Jacquetta was practicing witchcraft, people SAID Richard had an eye for his niece - but likely neither of these happened in reality.... And of the 2, it is more likely that Richard had an eye on his niece than Jacquetta was literally a witch able to raise storms & mist. (Wasn't King Manuel in Portugal off marrying 2 sisters in succession and then a niece at about this time?)

@@crazyand2099 this is getting heated, and I don't want to argue with a stranger over something we both enjoy. I'm bowing out. I'll end by saying that it is nice to see others enjoy this period in history! Fascinating times - better than fiction!

I so agree it's insulting to Elizabeth of York as well. As if she would want to be with him.

Seeing as religion played a huge role in people's lives there is no way Richard III and his niece would have committed this sin.
