I love that someone finally made Portia realise that her dissatisfaction is sorta in her head, or rather that given the beautiful places they have been to in this movie. Jack’s past was so difficult that he truly appreciates and absorbs the experiences he goes through, while Portia lives and thrives off of expectations not being met

No, Jack is a broken man who is here justifying *to himself* the murder he's been asked to be complicit in and the one he's supposed to commit but gives up on in the last moment. Jack isn't right, he's rationalizing. What helps Portia in the end is realizing the edge she barely didn't step over.

The subtle ambiguity of a glass half full/ half empty world view. Read all the comments of people arguing over whether or not he is right. Its perfect. Neither Portia nor Jack are really inherently wrong. We are always on the brink of apocalypse, at no time in human history have people chosen to end their lives so frequently, so many people live without hope and connection and YET its also maybe the most civilized time in human history with the best medicine and most widespread freedom. Its a powerful argument and both of them are bringing super loaded experiences with them into the discussion. I think especially potent is the subtext that Jack is hiding his true feelings with his statements which leads to more ambiguity. Does he really believe whats hes saying or is it a defense mechanism hes manufactured to bravely face a cruel and unknowable universe.

So fine, the logical takeaway, then, is that it’s the struggle and stakes that make life worth living and provide a contrast for the pleasant moments. Thus, luxury is the enemy. And this fits the theme of the two couples and Jack and Portia quite well. The hedonist couple and Jack feel alive, sure, but they’re also completely oblivious and irresponsible. They hurt others and don’t reflect on it for a second. They’re savages. But because of their savagery, they have joy in their lives. A joy that’s missing from the actually civilized people who are bored with theirs. It’s the trade-off in modern culture.

So I know other people have theories. For me he was supposed to distract her even kill her. He mentions things he did not want to do leaving us to believe it may be gay sex, but I think he meant murdering her. I think he never wanted to do that, this was way more than he was bargaining for and he wanted to save her. He took her straight to the airport ensuring she wouldn't run into his uncle. My take on it.

Agree. Quentin was supposed to kill Tanya and Jack was supposed to kill Portia, get rid of any “witnesses”. By not killing her he is taking a risk she can rat them all out (at her own risk), that’s why he tells her he knows she’s smart just don’t be stupid (ie keep your mouth shut and don’t ever come back).

Jack actually makes some profound comments. He just doesn't dress it up. The world is currently going through it's longest peace time period. Things make change, but for now there is no major global conflict.

@@mattblob Well I beg to differ. I'm not from either of those countries just to clarify that I'm not biased. It's a pretty major conflict in terms of the scale of destruction and death in a short span of time.

A lot of the characters are annoying, but she's insufferable. Sh es s in Italy, chilling, on someone else's dime, eating a gelato sundae and still complaining.

First season was better but this was still grade A

Jack's enthusiasm seems really, really forced to me. I think if we all had to think deeply about it, there's nothing about this era we're living in that would make us any more "happy" or "satisfied" than any other era. Sure, before cell phones and electricity there was a lot more tribulations that everyone had to go thru, but that would have also had its advantages, because within suffering is meaning, and I don't know about you but finding meaning is a pretty core part of my existence. And from Jack's perspective, I don't know if what he's saying is genuine at all- it seems like verbal peacocking to try and cheer Portia up, which while kind, is a really unnecessary gesture. Portia is right. The world is fucked up, but Jack does have a point- we are living in a miraculous time despite all the impending crises and deep debt to the environment that we have, we can travel anywhere we want, do, study, be anyone we want. I just don't think he truly believes it's great, because despite being out of his "hole", he's still an addict who is deeply miserable in his situation. The fact that he can point out that there's a silver lining is cool, but it's not convincing.

Also, the body language is really telling- while Jack is Explaining to Portia why she should be happy, he's standing over her, looking down. Then he decides for them that they should just live for the moment and 'get pissed', while dragging her along while she still needs to pick up her stuff.

I think you're misunderstanding Jack's point. It's not even about the past being "worse" than it is now, even if I agree with that as well to some degree, it's about the fact that it's stupid to go around thinking that the world nowadays is "crazier" or "worse" than it was in the past. Yeah, his perspective is obviously forced, and it's an actual plot point since he's clearly not from a good background, but if you were to forget that Jack is Jack, then the point still stands Then again, I bet you're biased as hell, just like me. You seem like soneone who vaguely thinks the world is "shit" at the moment, while I'm the opposite, and I think that's the power of the show; the way everyone can interpret it differently

@@18skeltor What are you referring to? The climate crisis? Nuclear weapons? Those are the most obvious, famous ones I can think of that could actually affect the global population I agree that it's dumb to ignore the societal issues of today in favor of "living every day as it comes". But in a sense, I truly feel that most people are limited in terms of what their resources allow them to actually do about these issues. Ultimately, the job of a politician, at least in my country, is to make decisions for the people (as in, they represent them), so that the general population don't have to make them. I'm sometimes annoyed by people like Portia who clearly have some form of privilege, and yet do nothing but complain, despite doing barely anything to actually better their situation. And thus, if anything, I feel like Portia's "we live in a crazy world" is more forced than Jack's quote

I agree, I don’t even know if Portia mentions this period being the worst in history - she just says where we are now is fucked. Other periods in history have been fucked also. While I think some of his points about seizing the day are valid, at the end of the scene saying they should just get drunk seems like - because of how bad his life was (and is) - he’s incapable of believing he can have longterm goals or admitting how hard his life is So, even though Portia’s kind of annoying, I don’t think his approach would answer her existential questions either and eventually she’d have to face it

Did the writers actually include so much profanity, or were the actors improvising because they thought it would make them look cool? Swearing in every sentence is a great way to make it sound like you never passed third grade 😂
