An ex of mine told me once that she dated someone that would fake seizures for attention. I asked her how she knew they were faked. She said when she tried to pry the eyelids open, her ex would resist opening them and would shut them harder. Usually when people have a seizure they don’t have control of their bodies and their eyes typically rolled to the back of their heads. My ex is a nurse. I thought those stories were so weird and odd. The lengths people go to for attention.

WOW... this personally REALLY upsets me. I had a condition called PNES (Psychogenic Non Epileptic Seizures). It's VERY real, but due to people who completely FAKE seizures, many people don't believe this condition to be "real." It was awful. It's a condition that happens as a result of trauma- PTSD, anxiety. It appears as though someone is having a seizure, but they're not TRUE seizures in that they don't register on an EEG because it's not due to electrical impulses going all haywire. I actually had to be hospitalized for 2wks on video EEG to get diagnosed with PNES. My seizure-like episodes were so frequent that I lost everything... I mean EVERYTHING... including my job, ability to work & provide, driving privileges, my car. Even friendships & family. I had to go on disability for years and it took a loooong time for neuro and neuropsych to even diagnose me & finally answer the hows, whats, and whys. In America, it's almost unheard of to get approved for disability benefits first shot... and I did. I'm just saying this to take home my point of how debilitating this condition can be. I cannot tell you how many doctors I saw that basically accused me of faking due to tests coming back as "normal" or saying "it's all in my head." I cried for weeks when I finally got diagnosed!! Just tears of relief. Come to find out, it really was "in my head" but not in the way one would typically think!! I was able to find healing for my trauma, PTSD, anxiety. I do struggle some days of course, but I've been episode free for 5yrs now after being on disability for 6yrs. It was a long, hard journey... but I did it!! I'm now a very happily married born again Christian (when I share my story in any capacity, this is an important factor to mention just because it wasnt until being born again that I found healing, but I acknowledge everyone's healing journey looks different!) wife and mother. I now have 4 beautiful children. I own a car, home, & drive. I make a comfortable living doing what I love and helping others get back to work who struggled with issues at one time that left them "unemployable." I'm also off of all government benefits & no longer require help in that regard (nothing wrong with that, but for those who've been on benefits, they know just how damn hard that is and what an accomplishment this is!). This topic of medical fakery just heats me up soooo bad because this is a very real thing and problem of people faking all sorts of medical conditions. Those kind of lies are EXTREMELY damaging to sooooo many people!!!! Faking seizures sounds like the least this woman did though. This woman not only faked seizures, she faked having full blown terminal cancer!! Not only faked having full blown terminal cancer, but faked being healed holistically from cancer... that is a whole other level & in my opinion, she MURDERED people with those lies!! People who fake such things (especially on a massive scale with her following) should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for such lies that resulted in the deaths of others. I'm sure it did!! Anyway, I'm so sorry for the novel- you didn't ask for this, no one did lol. I'm not sure why I wrote all this but I felt moved to... maybe it'll help someone else struggling!! 🙏 💕

Her holistic medicine gimmick helped muddy the water a lot there. We normally see people with cancer who ARE getting chemo and radiation therapy, and even tho it's medically preferable to dying of cancer, those therapies have a dramatic effect on how someone looks. What makes it really disgusting is that pretending to have cancer while looking healthy played into her marketing -- a BIG part of why I resent 'alternative' medicine influencers is because they're often trying to sell people this myth that conventional medicine us what's actually *making* them sick, that if they just did it "naturally" they wouldn't be suffering. It's the absolute peak of toxic positivity.

I know it's easy to say 'how dumb can people be' about believing her, but when you are told you have terminal cancer, any hope could be a lifeline. My Aunt, who had terminal cancer, started following a lot of her recipes, thinking that the publishers had done their due diligence, and yes, she felt better because she was eating so well, but it did not cure her and it was so had to see another hope she had shattered. And the thing is, sometimes the only way to stop that desperate person from falling for a scam is a little bit of "tough love" from a relative. Which can be difficult if either they don't have any relatives willing to do that, or else those relatives are younger than them and they themselves have an authoritarian mindset and won't accept "tough love" from their own offspring. Even when they are willing to accept that (as my dad was when I pulled the plug on him buying sketchy supplements for "brain fog" in the hopes of curing my mom's Alzheimer's - on three separate occasions) it can still take hours to bring that person down from trying to go for the scam again. And in the case of my dad, he did learn to spot it - but only after I had already intervened three times, and strictly at that. If I'd not been there or had taken a wishy-washy approach, he'd have bought it hook, line, and sinker. As many people do, when their lack of relatives or their own self-perceived place in the family hierarchy prevents such an approach. And it's not like I advocate being strict in every area, either - it's just that scammers are so slimy that you kind of have to be when it comes to them.

I was once personal friends with a man who faked cancer and embezzled from a homeless shelter. He sure could tell a story. He conned his wife too (which was hard to believe at first). Ten years ago, I didn't believe she couldn't know, but now I know better. Some people are very good at convincing people to believe them. I still feel bad I ghosted his wife when he went to jail, but so life goes.

I know what you mean about the conning his wife thing. When I was younger I used to think, how could their spouse not know, but as I got older I realized men can have multiple mistresses and the wife wouldn’t know a thing. I had been cheated on by an ex and literally did not suspect nothing until it came out 3 years later when she told me what they had been doing. I always feel bad for some of the spouses in this situation because they really could be just as shocked as us, but it’s worse because they were living with this lying, manipulative person. Also when it come to the money scams it’s easy to not know if they are lying or not because why would you question your husbands job or income if you aren’t the one who handles the finances. Especially if you are a stay at home mom or your accounts are separate. If your husband has an investment business and you’re not versed in business and he never really explains what he does how would you know it’s a Ponzi scheme? I know better now and like you said, life goes on.

Everyone please... if someone is having a seizure _CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES._ The person's life could be in danger from poisoning, a neurological event or even swallowing their tongue & suffocating. I knew about Belle's reprehensible lies about cancer, but hearing that she convinced people to endure her fake seizures _for 40 minutes_ is enraging because ambulances & emergency hospitalisation are _free_ here in Australia. Please do not hesitate to call 000 or 911 or 999 or whatever your local emergency number is and let _them_ - _NOT_ the person having a seizure - tell you what to do. These are time-critical medical events... better to be a little embarrassed if it turns out to be nothing (and you _shouldn't_ feel embarrassed about trying to save a life BTW) than sorry you didn't trust your gut feeling to do more. 💜

It is impossible to swallow your own tongue. Do not follow this advice. Ease them to the floor and make sure they have something soft cushioning their head and only call 911 if there are other symptoms. Or if it lasts longer than 5 minutes or 20 if it’s been communicated to you they normally have long seizures. Loosen any tight clothing and help them turn to their side after they stop jerking. Stay with them until it stops and listen to them if they communicate instructions to you. Clear the area around them, if possible. Please google for advice from seizure specialists and don’t spread misinformation about the condition. Even if you live an area where a hospital trip would be free, you are disrupting someone’s life without their consent over a flareup and probably making them feel worse about being sick. EDIT: wanted to clear up if someone is having a long seizure or multiple seizures in a row/short time period , CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES IMMEDIATELY. Those are actively dangerous! It’s just unnecessary and potentially upsetting for those who have regular seizures.

@Frank Skoda-Simmons It's disingenuous to label people "stupid" because they didn't know what to do in a medical emergency... many people do not have experience with conditions like epilepsy & most have never had to call 000/911. My comment was intended to help those people to _not_ feel helpless & know that there _is_ something they can do, even if they don't understand what's going on. Let the trained 000/911 person make the call on how serious the situation is. The reason I called out the free services is because I know in countries like the US they may not be, and I've spoken to people who have _avoided_ calling for help because they can't afford the ambulance bill. Australia is very multicultural & I've had to explain the free emergency services to numerous people over the years, including friends & family. People should _never_ hesitate to seek help... money is not worth more than your life. And I agree that it was completely ridiculous that the media & Apple bought her BS story without doing any due diligence... but scammers like Belle are successful because they take advantage of people's inexperience, often in situations which aren't openly discussed. Few people would be comfortable questioning the motives of a cancer sufferer, even in today's society... and _the only way you combat scammers of any type_ (affinity scammers, financial fraudsters, phishing & cyber-fraud, etc) is by _educating_ people - not calling them "stupid" or "gullible" & giving them more reasons to avoid asking any questions. _Anyone_ can be scammed given the right set of circumstances.

Nooooo this is not true. Many epileptics I know (including my aunt) specifically asks us not to call an ambulance. I am an EMT and now in medical school so I am fairly familiar with ensuring peoples safety/privacy during seizures. I understand as a non medically trained person it can be tempting to cal 911 but before calling 911 take the 3 seconds to see if they have friends/family around and judge their responses to determine yours. If they aren’t freaking out the person is probably epileptic and are informed of what to do for their loved one so an ambulance would be a costly bill. If you see no family/friends around then call 911.

As someone who has struggled with health since childhood, I've always considered it a red flag when someone bragged about a health struggle or volunteered information excessively. Also, Belle story isn't necessarily why so many people fell for the scam. There is a history of people believing a certain type of person - with a certain look and don't question claims or require proof. Think Theranos. Had Belle not continued to take advantage of the public, she would have gotten away with this much longer but she decided she preferred sympathy over praise and that's what got her caught.

To be honest, even with the best medical care, pancreatic cancer is a very challenging problem. Also, a seizure that lasts more than a minute is serious and I have never seen someone just wake up momentarily like that during a seizure, speak clearly , then lapse back into seizing. People are very drowsy after a seizure. Poor Jessica. And Ms Gibson just used Jessica’s family.

I got this coworker who has been telling customers and some of us coworkers that she's being worked too hard, and she has cancer in her liver, brain and breast. The liver is stage 4. The doctor who diagnosed it called her six months after her last in person visit for refills on narcotic opiate replacement therapy medication. He hadn't done any labs, but re ran a urine drug screen and found it. She tells people her electricity is constantly turned off, due to paying for chemo. She takes money nonstop off of customers, then laughs at how they will give her anything she asks for. The evidence of her cancers is extreme weight loss. Been skipping all meals while working for two years. Here's the strange part of this.... I'm three years clean off of methamphetamines and heroin. We live in a small town. She sneaks out to the parking lot hourly with random people and acts paranoid, delusional and high. High like I used to be. We have never seen a medication for cancer. Paperwork. Doctor's visits. Nothing. Her own family has said they never heard of it. Long story short, we all believed her until she started stealing. And lying. Nonstop. How can someone bust someone for exploiting people for money?

Oftentimes injuring themselves from the fall. A 40 minute seizure is insane. I have a step brother with CP. And my late dad had hemochromotosis and had seizures aswell. If I saw her doing her 40 minute seizure routine I woulda walked up to her after she told someone not to call 911 and I woulda told her she can knock that shit off now. We're all going home now.

Had ‘that woman’ been promoting her bullshit still, I know my mum would have followed her suggestions.
