The Weirdest Montana Agate I've Ever Found! Hunting an Island for Jaspers, Agates, & Fossils!

In this one, we head out for a short hunt on the Yellowstone and are treated to a wide variety of finds! Tons of jaspers covered in fortifications, Montana agates, banded chert, coral fossils, and even some Baculites! There was no knowing what we may find next! The biggest score of the day however, was the weirdest Montana agate that I've ever found; a big knobby tube agate with banded tubes poking out in every direction! We have a found a lot of Montana agates, but I have NEVER seen one like this! After our hunt we head back to the shop where we cut some of our finds! I hope you all enjoy this one, and I will have another one out soon!'

Oh look! Totally appropriate for upcoming Halloween! @11:27, on that amygdaloidal basalts, on the upper left-hand side of the rock is a tiny ghostly octopus! LOL, it's totally not, but does resemble one. But, the green pockets in the reddish basalt are so cool, I love it. I scanned the comments though and it looks nearly unanimous, the "tube agate" wins this video! Some pretty cool finds this trip, Theo, thank you for taking us along.

Hi Theo, I love your channel. I think that at 16:30 minutes into the video you are holding an agatized stromatoporoid. Earlier, in the video when you're rock hunting, I see you pick up rocks a couple times that are also stromatoporoid fossils, which are ancient sea sponges that could possibly be a billion years old. I'm not always 100% certain without actually holding and examining things in person, but that's what I think. I live in Michigan and find them in the lake often enough to know what they look like. ~Thurston~

I was thinking maybe an agatized coral of some kind, but you are probably right. Was just one of the weirdest-looking agates I've seen. Thanks for the input!

@Doxymeister Hi Theo, thanks for the reply. I don't think it's a coral fossil, because of the decided absence of corallites. The prominent cellular banding on the one side is common in agatized/silicified sponge fossils that I find. Also, at minute 14:30 is another agatized sponge fossil. Again, I'm not 100% certain without hands on, only fairly certain. Thanks for all you do and all the videos that record everything. You find rocks and fossils that I can only dream about. Best Regards!

The closed captioning at 11:12 says "Omega little" basalt. I found it in my Audubon Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals, and the real name is amygdule "...and the resulting structure amygdaloidal". Quite a stretch, but it is what it is! Fantastic!

I need to look for more banded chert. It’s just usually not very colorful here… I’m probably just showing my crystal/fossil bias here 😂 that tube agate was cool! I was excited to find a small Montana agate recently. It’s pretty sad by your standards but my son found it last week on the Mississippi and I really think it’s a Montana agate!

The bumpy agate definitely drew me in to watch this video, but I was hoping you would slice it so we could see the insides. But I get it-I have one that I found in a place that never has agates, and I am still trying to figuring out where to start.I love the basalt, and the shell! I get such a kick out of the idea that large clams can live in fresh water!I love how well it cleaned up!

Okay, about that "tube agate", @18:19, that's almost got to be some kind of agatized organic life, like a stubby finger-coral, maybe, or some type of stromatolite? I know you don't want to cut it, but could you maybe compromise (for those of us dying of curiosity) by slicing off the very bottom so that it sits squarely on a surface? Wouldn't that improve it's appearance as a display piece AND satisfy the curiosity of your fans? This is me wheedling, LOL. 😂Thanks, Theo!

Looked like a tough hunt with all the dirt coated rocks. The amygdaloidal basalt has to be my favorite. The polished ordinary old shell is nice. I was hoping the banded chert would be spectacular, but it was a little on the ho-hum side. Thanks for sharing.

How I feel I live in Illinois and there's a lake here that a certain time of year I can find a lot of mussel shells I never even thought of polishing it I've collected a couple bags over 10 years and I've saved them because on the inside where it's already shiny I'll see growths almost like natural pearls on the inside...... And also you are an expert I have such a hard time telling the difference between agate and Jasper 🙈 as always thank you for sharing and I to like it that you cut and polish some in the same video 👍

youre very good at identifying and describing the rocks you find. its helped me to identify some of my own finds. believe it or not Ive found a gorgeous stromatolite and a beautiful corprolite? in amongst the border-planter rocks in a strip mall parking lot. Ive also found fascinating rock specimens along one small stretch of railroad tracks. cant get to the mountains, rivers and streams but theyre brought closer in rural city areas as ballast and garden decoration.

Theo, could you please stop making the colour of rocks in the thumbnail brighter and more vibrant as it only leaves me disappointed when I see the rocks in the video. The agate in the thumbnail looks orange and yellow, yet in the video it is a tan colour. 😞

  • @TheoKellison

I do not up color saturation at all. It is completely a difference in lighting quality and my camera, it records in much lower resolution than when i take photos so colors often seem muted compared to the picture quality. The agate is in fact bright orange and yellow. Looking into replacing my camera so i can recird in higher resolution to avoid the issue. The gopro is even worse about muting colors
