I think the point you missed was that the old film stereoscopic cameras from the last century were around before computers were invented so you couldn't view them by 'wiggling them'. The way they worked was that they had two adjacent lenses built in to the camera's body, one taking an image from the perspective of your left eye and one from the right. You sent off the film to be developed and it came back with the images in slide form mounted next to each other on a small piece of cardboard. When placed in a viewer, your brain superimposed the 2 slightly different images giving a cool 3-D image. We used to own one of these cameras in the 1970s and it gave very good sharp images that were fun to look at for the 3D effect.

This may be the first 3D lens for a full frame mirrorless camera - however, Panasonic released a 3D lens about 10 years ago for the M4/3 Lumix and Olympus cameras. It was a dual lens 12.5mm IIRC. It is however very cool to see this new 3D-printed lens in action. I thought the results from the Pentax and the 4-lens models was equally impressive and achieved at least as cool of a look. Thanks for sharing you findings Mathieu!
Freakin amazing, can't wait till these go into their final stages and full-on quality production

Amazing! I've been hoping someone would bring stereographic lenses to digital. I own one that has 2 but 3 would be so awesome. Bummer that the lens run is so small and it's been a few months since the first run. Hopefully George can do another batch because I would order this in a heartbeat.
A delight, as ever. Thank you, Pete.
Also, I have one of those Nishika 4 lens cameras, and have been experimenting with 3d for years. A dual lens setup is better for live subjects, but you get nicer architectural and still life results with multiple shots on a modded macro slider, and you can get goofy lenticular stuff using marked camera rails.
If more lenses are added, you could print these out and put them behind a lenticular sheet, so you can make your own 3D patterns to hold in real-life.

For me, photography is all about having fun and you guys nailed it 👏👏👏
That's super cool, I once tried to get the same effect with two cameras and a flash out in the forest around midnight, turns out the forest is a pretty scary place at night!
This is awesome! I taught myself how to take stereo photos with a DSLR by hand, by shifting the camera side to side, and have been pretty successful with two-image stereo photos that you can see by crossing your eyes or putting it in a stereoscope. I also taught myself how to take multiple frames of a still life by moving the camera on a tripod and then use Photoshop to make them wiggle. I dream of someday having a camera or lens like this can take all the frames at once 😍

Presenting 3D images on a 2d medium such as a computer screen, using "wiggle effect" is just the way my old dog used to cope with the fact that he had lost an eye. He stood there wiggeling back and forth to be able to estimate distance. :D Great project!
@KanalFrump
5 ай бұрын
owls and most types of raptors also bob their heads to gauge distance. Their eyes are kind of natural "telephoto lenses" - and so aren't spherical, and so they don't swivel in their sockets.
This is really cool! But even cooler is the unexpected 'Shepard Tone' style illusion you've achieved in some of these shots: the image appears to be in a state of perpetual zoom despite being only 3 images.
@showalk
7 ай бұрын
He actually zoomed in on them though, it's not an illusion.
Hey Mathieu, I love the footage and the 80s music.
Nice project. The separation of the 3 lenses is not enough for anything but close subjects. Ideally you would want 2 lenses close together for closeups, and 2 further apart (same distance as human eyes, or greater). An updated version of the Fujifilm W33D with 4 lenses/sensors is what I am waiting for... and probably will be forever.
Absolutely loved this video! Well done as always my friend! Want to snag one of the lenses 😃
this is so cool, I'll have to get one of the lens bodies when they come out
I've been waiting for something like this since the reto3d came out
That's amazingly consistent, don't expect it to be perfect in backlit shots or when against a bright background , since. that glare will be hitting the lenses slightly differently, anyway. I'm amazed by how consistent it is when you take away the glare. I think I only saw a few exposure differences due purely to vignetting, there at the end.
I have a pair of Nishika N8000's one functional, and a broken one I used as a parts donor to tune up the better one. Haven't gotten around to using it yet, but this encouraged me to give it a try when I get my hands on some film developing equipment

Absolutely high quality content ❤️
So cool! That's an easily achievable effect on smartphones today as they have lots of cameras. Instagram will soon blow up with these.
I want to make one for EF mount or RF mount, wondering if I could do it with disposable camera lenses
Neber thought ill need to take a motion sickness break for a youtube video 😂
Fun little thing, not sure my eyes / brain knows how to process the wiggly pics though. Still it's a cool thing, good luck and my best wishes to the creator of this new lens series.
PRETTY NICE!
There's something really amazing about objects with motion blur in with this parallax effect!
With a center subject and some distance the effect of 3d separation is really strong. Digital is actually ideal for this.
Reminded me of 16 x lenses Fujifilm camera for golf - Rensha Camera Ryu N16, still possible to buy today in Japan, and some Japanese vintage photographer's still love using it. It takes 16 shots one by one, on 16 lenses, exposing 16 images on 2x 35mm frames film. Quite a strange beast from the past.
I have a collection of black and white and color stereo cards. I photographed a color card to get the size matching, and simply took some nature shots with an object in the foreground and then moved my camera a couple inches to the right and took another. It worked out well at the Grand Canyon with nearby branches at the edge. I substituted my digital images onto my "scanned" old stereo card, and printed it out, but this time on the orange border, I put a fictitious photo business with my name on it. With the right turn of the century font. Easy enough to spray mount the card on sturdy board..7 inches wide. Now, I'm going to push the envelope and make some really intense nature stuff, and I bought an old 3-D camera slider on eBay today to mount the whole smear on a tripod.
It's cool, though I kinda prefer anaglyph to wiggle. For a still image that is I've encountered a website long time ago that has a calculator to make a disk with 2 apertures - this is to take 2 images on same camera, same sensor. The disk is to be placed on the lens of course. However, my trials with it were poor (I used black hard paper to easy handling but maybe a metallic one would be better).
Curious what it looks like on the viewfinder/lifeview
This is awesome! Are there 3 pictures in one photo? How do you make them wiggle? Pack each one of them after the other and create a GIF, or a short video clip that repeats itself a couple times?
Does anyone know if you can get that 3D effekt in video too?
Interezting lens!! Did you had any issue on sony camera?
about halfway through the video I was thinking that I would love to just see a montage of wiggle photos. Thank you.

i want to put it on a canon 6d, is there any version for ef mount ?
Pretty cool, i will keep it in mind when digital paper with battery that last 100 years and is thin as paper comes to fruition in 2207
Is this any different from the Samsung 3D lens for the NX series DX cameras?
hey from where can i get one for myself
There is some of these lenses with 2 lenses, the lumix have one for m43, but with 3 the effect looks really different.
What is most impressive to me, is that you can get an idea of what motion blur from a slow shutter speed looks like in three dimensions at a given point in time.
I met a guy with two small Sony APS-C on a rig a few years ago. Turns out he was into stereoscopic images and used a 3D TV to view his own productions.
Is there a way to make this lens work for video?
Samsung had made a 3d version of the 45mm lense a few years ago for the NX line when it was still in the photography market.
Pre-orders are sold out :( how can I get one?
I love 3D photos and videos. I sincerely hope that George Mua’s idea will go into production. With any digital camera I have, on a still subject, I have to take a left and right image to achieve the effect I want, while for video, I still have no resolution for it, especially for an iPhone owner. I wish that smartphone makers allow for 3D video and photographing (Apple?).
@MathieuStern
3 жыл бұрын
That would be cool!
This is awesome! Where did you find the lenses?
You can create sort of the same effect by using a gimbal and shooting a short video, then the trick is moving the camera from one side to the other, and then make separate frames from the video, then putting them together nicely, it worked for me with a wide angle lens
Is there a version for dslr?

Hi can someone please explain how does the lenses work with only 1 sensor? I understand that the film versions have 4 separate lenses each focuses on a segment of the film giving 4 pictures that can then be combined to get the wiggle effect, but how does it work on one sensor? Do we need to take 3 pictures, and wouldnt the pictures be overlaid on eachother since all 3 lenses focus on the same sensor?
I'm sure many will see it as nothing more than a gimmick, but I think it's really neat!
when will more be fore sale????
