if he play at his best is untouchable in every court even on clay, his skills it's too much for the opponent, it was so fun to watch him play even when he had bad days was fun anyway there was something of magic in his tennis style

that week federer was unstoppable. impressive how easy it looked to play like that. it seems effortless.

His talent was on a uniquely different level.

Roger was so talented, he wore down his opponents mentally, even before he wore them down physically. He would hit winners off his opponent's "winners". Insane talent.

Some players will break every record he have,,, But he'll still be the true GOAT in tennis,,

No one is close to breaking many of his records-- 1. 237 straight weeks at world number 1 2. 5 straight Wimbledons and 5 straight US Opens 3. 65 straight grass wins (very few grass tournaments are held every year) 4. 10 straight slam finals 5. 24 straight semi finals.

@@DLH-zw3lx Best grass court player of all time. Yeah I know Djokovic beat him a bunch at the end at Wimbledon but he was past his prime. They also slowed the courts down intentionally to suit Novak and Nadal's game after Federer had developed a style based on the courts being played on and balls used during his developmental years. He won't get the GOAT title because of his lack of majors relative to his two main rivals and that's a shame because over all he was the better player and far more pleasurable to watch.

@@DLH-zw3lx I think it's fair to say RF had one of if not the most consistent peak in tennis history especially from the beginning 2004-end of 2007. 11 Slams accrued out of a possible 16 played. 68.75% Plus two French open finals played and two semi finals made. If not for Nadal and an inspired performance from safin in Australia in 2005 he'd have probably made it 12-13 slams during this period. Even though 2008 was considered a bad year for him three finals made with one win plus a Semi final following it up in 2009 with all four finals made and winning two of them. 14 out of a possible 24 slams won from 2004-end of 2009 winning nearly 60% of the slams across a 6 year period in tennis is extraordinary. Just a remarkable spell of consistency across all of the slams

I love how Roger "figured it out" against Nadal. He won 6 of their last 7 matches (there was an 8th but it was a walkover for Roger), with the only loss at the FO. And 4 of those wins were in 2017 when Nadal regained the #1 ranking. The key was Roger robbed Nadal of time. He never left the baseline during rallie and took the ball so early, giving Nadal little time to prepare for the next shot. And Roger played riskier tennis earlier in the rallies.

Rafa's minus point is,when someone hits very hard to his forehand again and again, he starts dropping the ball short cross court which is when opponent take charge..Novak exposed it since 2011 and roger figured it out late in his career...For roger to take the ball so early and rip it, is extremely difficult but he makes it look so easy

@@vijayendranvijay4538 Yes, Roger taking away the extra split seconds from Rafa became the true key for him at the end of his career. This is also part of the reason why Rafa has been successful outside of clay since many courts, including Wimbledon and the AO, have slowed down the game where it gives Rafa those extra split seconds he needs. There were years where the USO courts played slower than other years, as well.

Thank you! No one understands how important this was! People don't realize Federer was using the equivalent of a wooden racket circa 1965 vs Connors metal frame circa 1975 .He basically handicapped himself for well over a decade and STILL was right there with these two legends. When he changed he showed me at least (and probably a lot of his peers) that he was the single most talented player to ever play.

Growing up I never new how long a match could really last? I respect the sport more than I ever have!

Just joyous to watch. 36yrs old and a resurgent Fed stormed 2017. My favourite season of his since 2005...

2017 Federer is peak performance. Aggresive all court action, hitting early before opponent can react, the best serve by non-Giants, more importantly Neo-backhand is icing on the cake. He blasted numerous backhands even Nadal's forehand cannot answer

Roger was the only player that could half volley Nadal's crazy dipping spins and hit flick winners , consistently too.

It’s just impossible. Some of those angles shouldn’t exist.

Hats off to those few who gave him a fight...

That year Roger returned to his god level of the mid-2000s (for some he even surpassed it). I don't understand how many specialists don't consider his backhand the best in history. They usually put Wawrinka as number 1. Obviously Stan's backhand was the most powerful, but for me, that power was achieved only by playing it as if it were a backhand drive, especially parallel. On the other hand, Federer's backhand was something else, he played it in every possible or impossible way, including his variations with the backhand slide. Achieving winners with that shot from any position, height, power, overhit, that no other player could replicate or anticipate. Let justice be done, also the best backhand shot in history is Roger's.

Agreed! Roger takes the ball really early while Wawrinka stands far back so he has time to for a big backswing generating lots of power. If Wawrinka stood where Federer does, he wouldn't be as effective. Federer has the best 1 handed backhand while still taking the ball early.

The reason he returned to his god-like level is because he finally upgraded his equipment. He was always the best, was just playing with one hand tied behind his back. But yes, his backhand is magical. Unfortunately it would abandon him quite often because of its need for absolute precision.

Roger is just an insane talent and we're lucky to have witnessed him in our lifetimes.

And when the season seemed over after the U.s Open flop Federer showed us once again why he is the GOAT

It was probably one of those days, where everything was working for Roger, feet felt light, all the offense n defensive shots were working, nothing was wrong, the perfect week for Roger.. Cant say the same during his SF at the AO of 2016 & 2020

SF of AO 16 was the only GS match that I felt joker actually dominated Fed and 20 the first set Roger should have won by 6-2 but then again and later he was injured

This hardcourt was fast as hell. Look how dominant Roger is when the courts are fast and his amazing aggressive angles don't allow the baseline returners that extra time to even get in the point. Rafa and Novak got dominated on courts like this before tennis slowed everything down to creat a more competitive big 3 vs just Roger.

so true. a lot of shots he hit so hard that his opponent doesn't have the time to MOVE much less than returning it. if you are nowhere close to the ball, it won't be going back. Look at a few of the shots against Gasquet, he had not moved when the ball was passing him. He looked completely dejected.

It seems like other players don't hit enough in the empty spaces away from their opponents. Fed does it so well.

Point at 8:32 ..when Federer hits that winner, TV loses track of the ball completely. No matter how slow you play the video, you can't see the ball.

Unless I'm mistaken, funky styles of tennis like Dolgopolov and Tomic just don't seem to really faze Federer. Except maybe Santoro. Someone else want to comment on that?

2017 Fed - Beast mode of Federer!!!

Very few people realize Roger played with what was already an almost antiquated racket head when he turned pro. He only changed a year or two prior to this tournament and you can see the results. He stubbornly resisted going to the larger head size despite the fact that his rivals were using them for over a decade. Never understood that at all. He had his reasons, I've heard him talk about it, but it's pretty obvious he was just being stubborn. He wanted to beat everyone with inferior equipment. I guess it made it more poignant for him. But he potentially would've won a LOT more if he had changed sooner. His head to head after the racket change vs Nadal is eye opening. Other than a clay court match or two, Nadal was clearly the inferior player in Feds late career, despite being quite a bit younger (in tennis years) and going on to win I think 3 or 4 more majors after Roger was affectively done from the knee problems.

I stopped watching tennis since Roger retired. It’s really no longer the fun.

How do people see his game and are like, yeah Djokovic and nadal are better, none of them could produce the angles the returns the volleys his footwork and his serve, let alone at 37 take a look at how Djokovic and nadal are doing now at 37 and 38

Couldn't you just enjoy the tennis or even skip the video and shut your fuck up. If Novak showed up anytime in 2017. Fed would've annihilated him. Watch this tournament and any other after Wimbledon 2018 and you'll know the difference between a player in his prime and a player past it
