Had a friend of mine who was working as a lab assistant at a pretty big university back in 2007. He found out he could order some really scary stuff as a college sophomore. We talked about it and he went in and talked to the department head.... He got a raise and they changed the ordering process. I think he works at the CDC now.

That last bit was important. You need to order microbes, especially pathogens, through a lab, institute or university protocol. You can`t just buy stuff to use in your research, it has to be proper, with a written consent and some other items. Also for the top tiers of infection agents, you`re supposed to provide proof of how each vial or batch was thoroughly used and dispatched. Live vials can`t just be lost. Also, word spreads fast if you work with pathogens, and you`re on a watchlist if deemed untrustworthy and subjected to body searches to prevent exfil events. On top of that, there are places that, if an order seems suspicious, will ask the provided institution for confirmation of the order, and if it`s a fake order from impersonators, the shipment will contain a shitty dead yeast to make sure the live pathogens wouldn`t be successfully used in malicious events because shipping fake stuff is better than not shipping anything at all.

There are similar websites where you can buy small amounts of controlled drugs like methamphetamine for the purposes of calibrating testing machines. The samples are tiny though, like under 1 milligram. I got as far as adding meth, PCP and heroin to my basket and clicking checkout but stopped there. I don't know if there are further security checks (probably).

I've got one of those grow your own bacteria kits sitting in my closet. I'd love to use it, but I can't think of any place warm ENOUGH to culture them. I'd like to keep them at 30c or so constantly, which is easy enough during the day, but at night it gets cold so I can't just stick them outside. And there are no warm places in my house to put them. Unless I can just leave them at room temperature, but that doesn't feel right.

I'm not surprised you need some certification to get these nasty bugs considering the world we live in where people will use almost ANYTHING as a weapon. I could imagine if someone wanted to get revenge on someone or where hired to kill someone, they could just get some nasty disease and expose their target to it (which would probably be stupid as they'd most likely expose themselves to the pathogen as well) Stuff like this is best left to professionals that know what they're doing and how to handle these nasty things.
