I love this series! Fun fact: This series was my first introduction to fantasy books.

I was gonna write something about that. It was also one of my first forays into fantasy. I agree with the "solid" rating. It's just perfect for an "entry-level" fantasy read.

Omg love that you mentioned the cover art! It was exactly what drew me in as a cringey edgy teenager and what makes me cringe as an adult.

Legit! I've had the Night Angel trilogy on my bookshelf for close to 12 years and I only read them a year ago cause covid, hahaha They were a gift, and the covers always put me off of reading them.. but I thoroughly enjoyed it *spoilers(maybe)*That being said, i thought alot of the world building was very similar to WoT what with the Chantry's Speaker and their seraph tower in a floating island being a lot like Tar Valon and Sister Ariel giving of big Verin vibes and hell, the map of Midcyru basically having the same shape as Randland.. I also thought that kahlidoran aethelings and spys had a bit of a Darkfriends vibe... but it again it was well written and original enough to be satisfying in its own right.

"If youre into assassins you can shove this book right up your alley"..almost actual quote.
You know, I actually agree with you that Lightbringer is FAR superior to Night Angel. I really wish Night Angel had been done when Brent was already established as Lightbringer has been because there was a LOT of potential in those books and some themes I feel Brent really didn't have the time to play with, being limited in the number of books he could have. The ending of book three also felt REALLY rushed. However, I also love the Night Angel Trilogy and reread it often.

Agreed it was as though deadline day was 3 days away and he hadn't realised.. I really enjoyed it up until that point
I heavily enjoyed the first two books. The godking of Khalidor is hands down the most despicable villain I have read to date. SO I am most certainly willing to give Lightbringer a shot.
Yes/10 would watch unnecessary content again.
I think the thing with Night Angel is it is pretty straight forward with what is happening in the book. Solid story and a fun ride. And the assassin piece of it can appeal to a wider audience than just fantasy. Love Lightbringer more but this was still very good. It got me excited for lightbringer like mistborn got me excited for Stormlight.
I started this series as an 11 year old and now more than a decade and a 100 books later still one of my all time favorites :) i loved loved all of the characters, each one was so well written and full of individuality. I haven't read the books in 10 years but i can still remember them, dollgirl, jarl, momma k, logan, and ofcourse durzo and kylar. The storyline to me was exceptional and not like anything i've come across. I haven't read Light bringer but ill give it a go. Idk how i ended up here but i just realize how much i missed the world of night shadows I'll have to reread it. Also, this review does not the slightest justice to the book >:(
The reason I've liked it so much is specifically because I got tired of the whole warrior and made storylines, preferring things from course to a ranger or rogue story. It also kinda reminds me of more mature rangers apprentice.
how can these books be so good and so bad at the same time.
I've always considered Durzo Blint one of the best assassins in fantasy. Makes me think he will be a great match against Szeth from the stormlight archive series :)

I gotta take Durzo he’s too good
I just learned that there's a prequel book about Durzo called "Perfect Shadow" haven't read it yet but even now as a adult I love the trilogy, was my first young adult fantasy book. (My first fantasy book was Merlin's Dragon by T.A. Barron)
I have this book but haven't read it yet and this review has definitely renewed my excitement for eventually reading it.
I read this series maybe 10 or 11 years ago as a teenager and then literally forgot about it up until rn. It’s been so long lol. Might need to re read
I only read the Lightbringer series many years after the Night Angel trilogy, so I can't really tell you if they're comparable, but books 2 and 3 are certainly a step up from the first.

Night angel got better each book. Lightbringer gets worse and worse. I havent read the last book yet and honestly dont know if i will. The one before was just bad. I really really hate kip.
Yeah, your first comment about the book covers is so true. That's why I got the 10-year anniversary edition. Full black cover. With blackish grey text.
where's the reviews of book 2 and book 3 Daniel? k
Any follow-up for book 2 and 3?
I read these books when I was in juvenile detention they got me though my first few weeks
Has Daniel done book 2? I cant seem to find it
Are you ever going to post reviews of the other 2 books in the series?
Still my favorite, in spite of the flaws in the world-building and exposition (something that got worse towards the end of the series) but the story, characters and overall tone more than made up for it.

@@tinniesealjiji How certain elements of the plot and lore were revealed. Like, they mention the Harani and the creatures that inhabit their land a couple of times with krul being made from Harani bulls, but it's so vague and one-note that it feels lacking in purpose.

This was a decent series, but there was nothing that really set it apart. Robin Hobb's Assassin Series at least had the unique perspective of being told in 1st person...and was much more of an intersting read because of it. I would also recommend Melanie Rawn's Sunrunner series. It has a very unique magic system I think you would enjoy.
I read the night angle trilogy years ago and just recently bought the series to read again. I fully enjoyed it before and i dont remember anything about it. So i am enjoying the read all over again. I will read the light bringer series when i am done
I know they say , "don't judge a book by its cover" but that's exactly why I haven't picked this book up off my shelf yet. I bought it based on a recommendation and it was on sale. Maybe I should read lightbringer first though?
Did you ever finish the other two? I don't see a review for those on your channel...maybe do one of the entire trilogy close to release of Night Angel Nemesis? I'd love that 🙃
Oh man. Just wait till you get to the end of the series. In my opinion one of the most satisfying conclusions of any trilogy. I like Lightbringer a bit more overall as well. I think. Because the Night Angel Trilogy as a whole is stupendous. Will really be interested in what you have to say after you finish it!
Ive read the first two books and still working on number 3. I enjoyed both and they kept me wanting to keep reading whole way through. They had the potential to be amazing but they were still great.
Ik this is like my third time commenting this, but what happened to Malazan?

I’m getting to it. I’m trying to start a whole lot of series and see which ones I want to come back to. I CERTAINLY want to come back to Malazan
I read this about ten years ago and remember thinking I might be to old for this...
Hi Daniel, I've been enjoying your videos, and I was wondering if you've heard of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King (starting with the Gunslinger)? I ask because I'd be really interested to hear your opinions on the first book at least; it's like no series I've ever read, blending high fantasy elements, horror, post-apocalyptic elements. It's got such an unpredictable, captivating quality to it, and it's largely due to the world King creates, and his main character, Roland, who is my favourite fictional character of all time. We seem to have similar tastes (I LOVE WOT, Stormlight, His Dark Materials, LOTR etc), and I think you could get a lot out of this series that you may not have encountered in fantasy books before. Anyway, plug over, I just think it's way underrated, and would love to see what you think!
They have a set of all three books that has a complete black cover, including the page edges. It’s much more beautiful than the single covers.
I just finished the first book today. I enjoyed it. (Rogue class tends to be my favorite, and this one was done well). I recommend Robbin Hobbs's Assassins Apprentice if you want to see some solid and unique world building.
I'm reading it right now, and the cover was a turn off for me too lol but I met the author and that's why I originally picked up the book. I really enjoyed it and I'm not very articulate but I found it extremely immersive and like you said, impressively solid. Can't wait to read Lightbringer.
Half way through the book at the moment and I am loving it and just got the two other books today.
Just bought this book about three days ago. I always passed it up because the cover makes it look like a romance novel.
Grey Assassins > Honorable Knights. You can't always be the good guy
I avoided this book because of the cover art but let me tell you I will never judge by the cover again

Captain Crunch yes the cover art is HORRENDOUS but I actually liked the story
I cacan't wait to read this book once I'm finished with the lightbringer series
This trilogy was my favourite read of all times.
please do a review of this from the graphic audio version! it's such a different experience.
Came back to watch this after I saw it in a recent video of books that under-perform on the channel. I really do want to know more of your opinion on the series as a whole.
wondering how you found the last 2 books? i enjoyed the first book good, but by the end of the third book i gave up on Brent Weeks for a while.
6 years later and Daniel tries to delay every episode of isekia DND.
Glad that you gave this book a chance :) it isn't the best for sure but this was actually the first book that got me into reading fantasy. Great review! Also about the coverart I recommend checking out the international versions especially from spain. Their coverarts for the nightangel trilogy and even the lightbringer series are pretty cool
I liked the first book but enjoyed books 2 and 3 a great deal more, so hopefully you do as well.
Hey Dan, I didn't read the book, so until I do, I'm not watching. I just stopped by to say I'm a huge WoT fan, and your videos have been a treat to watch. Three reads and two listens so far, and the story is even better when you pick up things you missed. Do you ever listen to audio books? It was great to see you pick up Joe Abercrombie. IMO, his books following the trilogy are the best, and Steven Pacey is a treasure of a narrator. When I saw your reaction for The Blade Itself pop up, I was worried you wouldn't like it, but you were spot on! I've seen you do a few videos on some sci fi classics like Clarke and Herbert. How about giving Alastair Reynolds a read? Try Revelation Space. The guy worked for the European Space Agency in astronomy and astrophysics before giving it up to become a space opera novelist.

I didn't imagine he would, but I like to go into new books blind.
Keep it up man these are great , refresher
The next books arent better but not worse. They are different. The second book has the entire saga about the pit which is a very interesting read
I really liked the first book and most of the second as well. The small magic system and the orbs that have specific higher capability magics, then the relationships with Logan and Doll Girl. Then Vi went from a complete skipable side character to one of the most important people in the series in a way I really hated with zero build up, it's just she's nobody then a time skip and she's the most powerful wizard the world has ever seen, then there's massive magic wars with mythical beasts added and people come back to life with godlike powers that don't fit the small magic system the first book built, and it really killed the series for me. The first book is still great as a standalone though, most of the second is great as well but it has a really empty ending that needs the third book to pay it off.
Personally I much prefer the night angel series over light bringer
Funny enough, Ninjas in reality were highly relugious.
PUSHED the LIMITS????? I was sneering dying this entire review but that was my last straw 😑😑
Lightbringer is better the way of shadows, where was the struggle apart from walking up some stairs. I couldn't put the shadows down, even at work I would be thinking about it. Lightbringer was more like oh yeah I have not finished this book yet. U read great books but still I can not get on board with your opinion, each to their own.
I like more Lightbringer, but Night Angel is very good too. I would liked to challenge you, out of your comfort zone. Try to make time to read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.
I read this book about 2 years ago and I found it so dull and boring that I didn't read another book for over a year. Only when my brother got me a new copy of my favourite book Count of Monte Cristo did I finally pick up reading again. Then I got into the wheel of time and my life changed forever...
now i have a clue . keep reading for me . YES !
You know I’ve never read this book that you’re reviewing but I picked up light bringer and light bringer was not worth finishing not even the first book. I couldn’t really tell you why I was just bored and didn’t care what was going on in the book.
What is the font on the front cover?
Kylar story overall is better than Kips. Kip ending and his time with Gavin was better but only cause Durzo played more backseat where Gavin was as central as Kip in the whole trilogy
That bookshelf doe
As an edgy 11 year old I saw this series in a Barnes and Noble and fell in love with it lmao

I'm reading the series right now and I'm 12. I'm not edgy though, my dad just wanted me to read and this was one of the options I had to choose from all the books he had for me that he read before, and I am on the second book right now.
I actually prefer this series to Lightbringer for some reason
So the book based on Broken Eye. Ok
i love that your first seconds were a big fuck you to your haters, LOL you're the best
I felt the same way, pretty good but not great.
"I am interested to see if the next books step it up" Unfortunately no. The first book was the best in my mind. Serious decline from here on.
probably because assassions are more popular
Dat cover looks like shit but I am interested in trying this series out.
Way of shadows was not good for me.
Just finished the trilogy. All of them have that suuuper cringe cover art. The magic in the later books gets craaaaaazy
Seems extremely strange to say all the characters were good and necessary. The depiction of women in this book (on the rare occasions they appear at all) would be laughable if it wasn't so depressing. None of them really do anything, except moma k who is then completely shut down by durzo. The other women are only described by their physical appearance and relation to the male characters, adding nothing whatsoever to the plot. Worse still, the creepy description of a 15 year old girls body was not only gratuitous but deeply uncomfortable. Just awful, the whole thing. Did Daniel not notice these issues,, not care, or just choose to ignore them?
@blueeyed5074
3 жыл бұрын
Well maybe, like me, he didn't think that those are ''issues''.
I found the 1rst book engaging and promising. The end of the first and the start of the second book were waaaaay too cheesy and cliche, just dripping with boring basic plot devices. I think I'm more disappointed than I would have been since it originally had so much promise.
great series, though, I'm no prude, the sex in these books is a bit much. I mean c'mon. It's trying to get a HBO series. We all enjoy a good tumble. Stop it.
I personally think its a dumb series, but good ideas inside.
The reason lightbringer isnt as popular is the main character sucks. And he continues to suck through the WHOLE FUCKING SERIES. Kip is the worst main character in any fantasy ive read. By far.
