If I were to take a guess, part of Sanderson's beef with organized religion seems to come from an idea that pops up multiple times in his work--i.e., that religion is about defining right and wrong and enforcing those standards. (That is, he seems to identify religion with a divine command theory metaethic, powered by institutional enforcement and the threat of divine retribution.) That idea pops up twice in The Way of Kings that I can remember (one of which you mention here--the other one is a debate between Jasneh and Shallan's favorite ardent), and I seem to recall it coming up obliquely quite early in Mistborn (as a bit of philosophical banter with one of Kelsier's co-conspirators). Now...this strikes me as a pretty impoverished view of religion. (I also had some irritation with the juvenile way that religions were discarded by a certain character later in the first Mistborn trilogy.) But I really shouldn't be too harsh with Sanderson, as he usually has something up his sleeve...

Yes to ALL of the above lol! I trust Sanderson so completely, I'm absolutely shameless 😂😂 It's honestly just nice that he interacts with religion in a way that isn't completely negative and stereotyped, which is how a lot of modern authors do it. "Impoverished" is such a good word for the attitude toward religion in today's literature!! I'm stealing that. Thank you so much for leaving your thoughts! Always love to hear from you!
