The Way It Was: The AB&C. Railfanning The Fitzgerald Sub

This is a re-issue of a DVD program I produced in 2010 on one of my favorite CSX routes: The Fitzgerald Sub from North Central Georgia, to the Southeastern corner at Waycross.
I've made a few edits for time, but it's basically the same show as the DVD. Enjoy!

Seeing the Wisconsin Central SD45 brought a smile to my face. I have fond memories of WC trains rumbling by with 3 SD45s in notch 8 giving that distinct sound you could hear miles away. I wish they were still in operation and not bought by CN.

Did you know that Talbotton once had it's own short line, The Talbotton Rail Road. About 25 years ago, a banker friend in town gave me a lead box car seal embossed "TALBOTTON R R". Unfortunately, I no longer have it. I did not know that Talbotton turned down the junction. I just know that it is really hard to get a decent night's sleep at any hotel in Manchester, due to all the horns.

  • @distantsignal

Yes, I knew about the Talbotton RR. I didn't know Manchester had any hotels to speak of. Plus, why are they blowing horns in Manchester? There are only two crossings and they're both outside of town.

Lots of those depots between Fitzgerald and Manchester my father worked at as a relief telegrapher/agent for the first 10 years of his career. Somewhere around 1956 he landed temporarily in Fitzgerald, then Manchester, then Coolidge, then Oglethorpe, then Montezuma and last Cordele before retiring because of health problems in 1985.

Great video. Thank you for sharing. When I lived in Ft Walton Beach, FL I heard about the Fitzgerald subdivision from several railfans. It is nice to see all the searchlight signals that were still active in the early 2000's. The former L&N line that ran from Pensacola to Tallahassee was "dark" territory. The line was not very active.

Yes, I railfanned the Tallahassee/P&A subs several times. Last time in 2018, I caught 8 trains out there. It was much busier then. I grew up in Tallahassee and have family in Panama City and Fort Walton.

@@distantsignal I was stationed at Eglin AFB from 1973 to 1979. The USAF railroad was still operational and interchanged with the L&N. As part of a management study, I was permitted to ride the engine to Crestview and return. The railroad closed in the mid-70's. In 1970, I made a round trip on the "Pan American/Gulf WInd" from New Orleans to Marianna FL. The ride from Flomaton AL to Marianna FL was on jointed rail with numerous slow orders. I have great memories of the L&N, although the deferred maintenance was beginning to affect timekeeping. Derailments were becoming common. After I left Florida, the track was upgraded with welded rail and they replaced the bridge over Pensacola Bay. I really enjoyed the video that you made about the line, especially the signals installed for switch-point indication.

As somebody who's pretty new to railroad and railfanning, people mention words like "subdivisions" and similar words that I assume have something to do with labelling a certain length of track. I'm not from Florida or anywhere nearby. Indiana, actually. Can you describe how these names come to be and other similar words? How do they come up with the naming of a division or subdivision? Are there other named portions that are either bigger or smaller than these words?

Can I ask another stupid question? What is the CSX Office Car? Enjoyed the video immensely. The truck was slightly muddy, to get real muddy you have to go off road in Wales in the winter. The mud pools, splashes and sticks, after one session the truck had doubled in weight without any in the bed of the truck. We cleaned the truck at home and removed six wheel barrows of dirt from the driveway when we finished. My wife has forbidden me to bring a truck like that back for cleaning. I need ideas on getting rid of six barrows full of dirt.
