im crying listening to this. MY POPS died yesterday. HE love the HAG and this song. He used to bring the 45rpm to my bedroom and beg me to play it on my stereo. I was a heavy metal teenager and NOT into this at all!! He loved the lyrics. Decades later i understood. RIP POPS. 1939-2024

We are now living in a self-centered world of; "the way I want to be seen". Which is saying that nobody's got any way about them anymore that's "real" ! Seems like there's no more positive values, Godly morals, hard work ethics, grit, gumption or determination. All the things Merle would sing about. Now it's mostly a country of entitlement, vanity, and the glamour of me, myself, and I on facebook. When Merle sings "the way I am", I believe he is referring to a way of life obtained from an old school upbringing that yielded the true character and conduct of a man or woman which results in the continued building up of a great Nation like we once had, and could have again if the generations to come will truly and seriously examine " the way they are" !

When Merle rolls down for those low notes he evokes his inner Lefty. Its so fantastic. I'm lucky to have seen him live in small joints a couple of times.
