at this point, he's just going along and agreeing to what people are telling him. He's so out of his element, he's suing his former minority owners, there is a congressional investigation into the workplace he presided over and now personal allegations about him, he's been told to elevate his wife to co-owner status and the NFL recommended /told him who he will hire as his Team President - he aint the same guy he was in his 30s or even his 40s when he was simply a horrible owner. Now in his 50s, he is a neutered horrible co owner.

At this point, I really, unironically would have liked them to stick with Washington Football Team. Even then, the Hogs would have been a far more acceptable name.

They have 1983, 1988, 1992 as the super bowl years. That is the year we won the Super Bowl but the NFL season we won it in is 82, 87 and 91. It was the 1982 team that won NOT the team in 1983. They totally messed up and have obviously put NO meaningful thought into much of anything really.

The team has had a banner with the years of their combined NFL and SB titles within FedEx Field...with the Super Bowl years as 1982, 1987, and 1991. There was very little reason for them to screw that up.

What's really wrong with the name?

Washington Football Team was the tail end of the redskins legacy, and a chance to emotionally say goodbye to the skins. The commanders are a new team. The team I supported since 1983 is done and dusted. It’s not unusual, I guess. Fans all over the US have lost their team from time to time. Teams move, coaches move, players move. But fans are expected to stay through thick and thin…..and changes of the team. Well, not me. I’m off after 39 years. Good luck to the Commanders.

My family and myself have been Redskins fans since they moved to D.C. My grandmother moved the family to D C. just because the Redskins were moving there from Boston. My grandmother was part Blackfoot Indian. I really liked the name, The Sentinels. But I will still say Redskins until I die. In my grandmother's memory.

I’m 0% Native American, but I’ll stand with this.

I'm not a fan of the team but in all honesty. My heart goes out to you fans out there. Especially the diehards who have been around. You have my sympathy.

This was super obvious really. There was no way they'd pick a cool name. This might be the next step on their way to being dissolved to open a spot for another team

100% without a doubt. The mascot and stadium chants could've been so lit with that name. Literally writes itself. Not to mention Wolves are prominent in Native American culture, so it could've been a very respectful rebranding of Redskins where you can still keep the same themes. They really missed a big home run.

I’m 24 and I was a fan of this team since I was 9 years old. All of that ends today. I’m either going to be a Ravens fan from now on (I’m born and raised in Maryland anyway) or just bandwagon on different teams because I don’t care, I have no idea yet. But all I know is that I’m done. Just why did I have to grow up being a fan of THAT team?

I understand the whole trademark situation with the name "redwolves" so that sucks.But could you imagine a whole stadium howling during a close game situation. Would have been kinda cool.

As Tony Kornheiser pointed out, team names with at least 3 syllables are always shortened like Bucs, Cards, T-Wolves, Niners, etc. And the logical shortened version of this team's new name will be The Commies

I thought Hogs would have been a nice choice in keeping with team tradition. I know a lot of people felt like Sentinels would have been a better choice, even if it was from a movie. Commanders just feels kind of flat, like it's not horrible but it's not really inspiring either. Colonels or Generals both sound better.

Sentinels would’ve been cool. But you just know if they went with hogs people would’ve made fun of it even more and said “haha they named themselves after a pig” They also couldn’t go with generals because that’s the job team that loses to the Harlem globetrotters so that would’ve been even more embarrassing. I do agree with you though that commanders is just an eh name. I’m indifferent to it

Nah lets name them after a rank in the british army, commanders- during the Revolutionary war- with a shorthand dis- commy, that is almost as wide known as 'fish in a barrel'- The higher ranks only ate seafood and were apart from the regular troops ie making them all the easier to go after via sniping and gorilla tactics in said revolutionary war.

If I lived in the DC/Virginia area, this would be the day I stopped watching NFL football... soulless name
