Exactly! I guess that's why we need to look again at these old stories, to learn what we can, and try to avoid making the same mistakes. Surely someone somewhere will learn...??!!

Unfortunately, this story may have a lot less to do with scope creep than with the inability to tell the truth to authority, including admitting, "I don't know how to do that." I believe this is actually an important reason why scope ends up creeping.

You're right Scott, these are complex situations with multiple causes. What you call "the inability to tell the truth to authority" has recently been given a smart name by Prof Bent Flyvbjerg - he calls it "strategic misrepresentation". I have a different word - it's called "lying"!

"Strategic misrepresentation"...I have to remember that! I would have some sympathy for a person who lies or withholds some part of the truth from someone who doesn't want to hear it if that latter person has the power to impose serious consequences. That is, as long as harm does not come to others by lying.

Hmm, what about ethics? Some years ago I produced "The Risk Management Professionalism Manifesto", outlining what a client has a right to expect from a risk professional. I'm currently thinking about how this applies to the risk management challenge. How do you "tell the truth" when the subject matter is inherently uncertain??

It's worth pointing out that certain systems tend to enable "strategic misrepresentation" more than others. This story is a prime example of subjects living in fear of a monarch who can't handle being told no. Whether or not the King would actually have reacted badly is moot. The historical precedent of kill-the-messenger monarchies was enough. No system of government is immune to this, but some are definitely quicker than others to inspire bad behavior in engineers.

Gamers know this as "feature creep". Developing a game typically takes several years. More if you're attempting something ground breaking in the tech. Long story short, go watch a story/document/anayisis on the Duke Nukem Forever game. It is quite a loathful example of "creep" on a project. And yes, the title is wonderfully ironic.

That's amazing! I hope you and your fellow-students learn the lesson of the Wasa - avoid scope creep, even if powerful stakeholders insist!

Hubris has been mankind's constant companion as we pushed the frontiers of the possible. There is no field of engineering where we have not totally screwed up. And this ghost is not gone.

Thanks for asking. The graphics were created using VideoScribe, and the idea is to reuse graphics throughout the story to indicate repeated characters or themes. It's free and easy, and many people find it engaging and interesting to watch. Did you not like it?

First off the Ship was called the Vasa not Wasa,and it sunk 333 year's ago not 400,I dont think you did much research.

Thanks for your comment Ralph. This video was an English translation of an original prepared in Spanish by my Argentinian colleague Pablo Lledo (www.pablolledo.com), and he did the original research. She sank on 10 August 1628, which is nearly 400 years ago. The wikipedia article has both spellings of the name, but you're right that Vasa is more common.

Thank you Joel. You're right that Vasa is the most common spelling (although the ship was originally named "Vasen"), but Wikipedia recognises that both spellings are used en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_(ship). This article says that the Vasa name was adopted by the museum in the late 1980s. Sorry!!

I know and np my friend it just sounded funny to read Wasa everytime i am in Stockholm to visit my friend we go to the museum right now i cant cuz of the virus but i fokus more on the training with my bandy team edsbyns If we won this seasons elitserien as we call it in swedish dunno what the english Word for it is 😂😂
