The Warning - TEDx Reaction
• Young Girls Love to Ro...
The Warning are three sisters from Monterrey Mexico, Daniela (15) Paulina (13) and Alejandra (11) that love music. In this video they perform their original songs River Soul and Exterminated, along with a cover of The Pretender. Between songs, they explain how they got their start playing music, and why they work so hard everyday to improve doing what they love.
The three sisters knew they are far from being the musicians they wanted to be, and had this dream of attending Berklee College of Music “Five Week Summer Program”. The girls had started writing their own music and wanted to soar musically. That dream became a reality thanks to the support of their supportive fans (through a “Go Fund Me campaign”) and the Ellen De Generes show who contacted them and invited them to appear on the show because of the impact of the “Enter Sandman “ video. After the show, Ellen continued their interest in the girls and asked to follow them while they attended the summer program at Berklee. The sisters made a “video diary” for the EllenTube Channel. They have written more of their own music; they are very happy with it. While they practice every day for 2 hours individually and at least another hour together, they know they still have a lot to learn

After the second one, the organizer had said they had an open invitation to return any time. Sadly, he also greatly disliked the direction they took with QOTMS and I believe said something along the lines that it wasn't them. Just goes to show that some will dislike any change in sound, no matter what a band does. I firmly believe QOTMS will one day go down as one of the very best concept albums of all time.

In my lifetime I’ve seen history being made before my eyes and of course on TV. KZread has provided us with being part of a historical journey with The Warning. Although they’ve been playing together for almost 10 years and some of us have been following them for a few years, the time has come for The Warning to become what they are destined to be. I really think they are on the verge of stepping into the success that The Beatles created 60 years ago. Great reaction Rob

They started working on their stage presence because of a class at Berklee School of Music in Boston, in 2015. This concert was 6 months later(2016). It has been a process. Ale's deep knee drops and hair flip came later. Dany's crowd control, laterl. Pau has always been an animal, Lol, but beating the crap out of her drums was always a natural thing for her. For a long time she hit harder because she thought she had to, to get the sound she wanted. As she got "bigger" and her wrist strength improved, she has not had to take a 'full windup' when she plays. She said she is less tired after a concert now. I miss Muppet Pau!!!

In her Gear Masters interview, she says she changed to heavier gauge sticks to put more mass into her strikes. That means she can get more out of the impact with less work. But if you watch the MTV VMA performance of *Evolve,* she lays it on really thick there. I'm sure much of it was enthusiasm for the opportunity, and the chance to show what they could do! While Drumeo announced that award for Rock Drummer of the Year 2023, they played a clip from that *Evolve* performance and a clip from *23.* kzread.infoYAfkI3Ys_WQ?si=hMvObCiFw0G_02Cd&t=2211

Pre-teen Ale had no problem belting it out, as well as talking endlessly. I think she just got the ordinary "teen-age self-consciousness" for a few years, perhaps during her sudden and dramatic growth spurts. IIRC, Pau said she's never had a problem with the "talking endlessly" part, at least among family and friends. But I think singing-wise she's starting to regain her original confidence and we'll hopefully see more of that in years to come...

Later there are versions where Ale takes the lead vocal on River’s Soul. Both of those two songs from XXI Century Blood are more seasoned with their live show the Dakota Bar which is one of their standout performances before the 1st Landmark appearance live at the Lunario CDMX which ushers in QOTMS along with the songs sprinkled throughout from that 1st LP.

Saying that Pau has a bit of a sadistic side is probably pretty accurate!😄 She wrote a good portion of the songs for the QOTMS album. She's been accused of beating her drum kit like they owe her money, and it's been said that she destroyed pretty much every toy she got as a toddler. So the drums are a pretty good fit for her personality!🤣 Just an FYI, the TedX performance from 2017 compared to this one shows just how far they progressed in one short year. The fact that they were invited back goes to show just how good they really were.😉 Thanks Rob!

This video was the most watched video from that event and earned them an invite back the following year.. If you think Pau was going nuts here, you HAVE to watch the other one as well. She goes FULL BEAST MODE and breaks a stick. Also, I think one of the reasons this sounded a bit more 'raw' was because of the mix. It sounds like the recording is almost straight from the mixer so you don't get enough of the natural reverb from the hall itself.

  • @williamburkholder769

It's a AWFUL mix, whereas the 2017 mix is better. But MANY of their earlier shows have vocals somewhat buried in the mix. At some point, they started putting compressors on the vocals, and switched to better vocal mics, and suddenly you can hear them. Lead rock vocals ALWAYS need two things: dynamic range compression, and a mic without too much boomy proximity effect. The Shure SM58 Mic is boomy on Dany's voice. They switched to an sE V7 mic and almost instantly she sounded better.

It's an hour and seven minutes long but well worth the watch. Also, they did another Ted Talk 1 year later in 2017, where they performed Unmendable, When I'm Alone, and Survive all off of the XXl Century Blood album, Exterminated and Rivers Soul is on that album as well. That album was recorded when they were Dany-16, Pau-14, and Ale-11 years old. That is just absolutely nuts.

They were written around the time of ‘Free Falling’ and were intended to be on that first EP before Sandman fame, the Ellen Show and planning for Berklee adjusted their plans. There’s numerous videos of them playing them in subsequent years. Ales sung lead on Rivers Soul several times. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZXysmM-xgNTQoKw.htmlsi=ueueAPIfGoLp04mK kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zqp_mMudhqjfaco.htmlsi=e7pBiwe6_4NF535I & they played both at the awesome Dakota bar show in 2018.

That took some serious guts for those girls to go to a foreign country, sing their original songs and a cover in their second language, perform at a university, speak in front of a room full of adults with poise, and have fun doing it! Kudos to their parents for doing all the right things. *River's Soul* and *Exterminated* appear on their first album, *21st Century Blood,* which came out in 2017. They covered the Foo Fighters' *The Pretender,* several times. I also like the outdoor version played at sunset, live, in a vacant lot near Monterrey. As for Ale's vocals, it's as if she got quiet for a few years as her voice deepened to a rich alto and she figured out where and when and how to use it. She seems to be singing more, in more recent videos.

In 1975, they all attended the Berklee School of Music's Summer program. From what I understand, the minimum age to attend is supposed to be 15 years old. Pau was 13 and Ale was only 10 Ale was so small that her mom had to carry her bass to class for her.

Great show VC....love these TedX hope you will do the next one as well, a must see. Pau's comments were precious, "your a girl, you can't play drums" and 10 years later is "Rock Drummer of the Year"....LMAO at the naysayers. Also a little bit of "animosity" in her comments 😁😁. Love listening to the Ladies talk, so down to earth and so damn brilliant. Cheers. 😎😎

I have never seen this, I don´t know why I have been stuck at the Ted talk 2017, maby it´s because I love watching Pau beat the living daylights out of her drums so the drumsticks fly around or the over all energy in that performance, I guess it´s both. Don´t miss the TEDx 2017! Ale is very prominent in this performance and they all have their "future" personas ready. Thanx for reacting to this!

Funny you say how you don't like the song The Pretender (or Foo Fighters). I say funny because The Warning's stand-alone video of that song was what actually Warned me about this band back in 2017. I'd never before seen 3 such young people play so well together. Maybe check that video out some time too. That video shoot was done outdoors and DPA played live. And I know you will agree the performance and the filming of it were top quality.

Ah - they are already inspiring other artists! There is another power trio from Kelowna, British Columbia who has been looking up to The Warning for years, learning to play guitar by watching Dany. They just released their first song, at ages 16 for the lead singer and 15 for the drummer and base player. Freeze the Fall, Glitch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hI1mmLN9hdGflKg.htmlsi=1tNsa4bbwWfro2bD

Pau said she would never play it in concert because it was too emotional, but did recently do it on their 10th anniversary Pepsi Centre concert. As many of the comments suggest doing the second TedX performance around a year later. Pau makes sure the drums are severely punished especially in the first song. Her one drum stick finally breaks. Their growth in one year is scary. Their speeches are better and smoother. All three are beyond their years in smarts, talent, musicality, song writing and composition and public speaking. They claim they were nervous but it doesn't show. And Rob I'm sure we all would appreciate watching your reaction. The second TedX is titled "You've been warned." Maybe the origin of that phrase, by your girl Pau.

Hey Rob, love the Teddy R line! You’ve aged well. Thanks for your reaction to this. I’d not seen this one before and thought your comments on Dany were very well said. Like others say here the 2017 TedX is really a great watch and cool to see how these girls grew as performers in just one year. Also, yes their 2 original songs here are on their XXI Century Blood album which came out the next year. Lastly, you mentioned being able to see an interview or documentary about them. This is Tidal Rising: The Warning. It’s 20 minutes long and is a great watch. It’s recent enough and won’t give away any songs you haven’t heard yet. It would be a great watch to see you learn about them and their personalities. Thanks again. Another great, authentic reaction!
