The wandering complaint and other scams. Turtle Wins The Race home-based business podcast

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What I refer to as the wandering complaint is a pretty common scam that dirtbags will pull to try to get refunds after they've bought something. This is the story of the worst person in the world and the dumbest scammers in the world and how I handled them.

I feel like some people's life's purpose is to complain no matter how perfect something is. Some of the worst are the ones who say everything is fine to your face and then complain from the safe distance of a phone call. :/

I recalled a customer asking that I "send her a new lip balm because she could not get the plastic wrapper off the lip balm tube that I sent to her." I told her to "send the lip balm back and I will send you one without the plastic wrapping." Another nutty customer asked, "why would I send her a soap bar with olive oil in it I know she is allergic to olive oil."

Oh yes! Often the most basic venue & the lowest budget party turns out to be the most fun and the least hassle. Also you soon lose count of how many charities, influencers and even 'stars', or their agents at least, expect freebies, "it will be good PR or good exposure". As for those who try and abuse the ebay & etsy refund policies...

I went to school in Boston for floral design and used to do weddings on the side. I did all the flowers in this one particular wedding and had three big bows that were to be attached to the wedding party table. That was the last thing to be done, but I was TOLD to leave by the staff where the venue was held, because the wedding party was coming in. No prior warning of how much time I had left, they literally shoved me out the door. I gave someone the bows and asked them to please attach them to the table and I left. Needless to say, the bride refused to pay for any of the flowers, because the bows were not attached and she claimed it ruined all her photos. Yah, ok. This person worked with me too. I later found out she did it to the cake person and the photographer. It must have been the year of the wedding scammer.

This was great to hear, and you’re right sometimes it’s just better to refund partially just to get rid of the person and their jerkiness. I can smell a scam too. Once a girl from England bought a high end vintage item from me via PayPal, but she (and I knew) the shipping address has to Match WHERE you ship it. She kept asking me to ship it to different countries and then said she was coming to nyc to vacation and pick up the coat. Then if I followed her lead, she could claim a refund, and get it! I would not be covered by PayPal seller protection!

When you said the bride called you after her wedding, I thought the last thing I'd be doing after my wedding would be calling ANYONE, I'd be in my honeymoon!! (Only exception is we called my in-laws who couldn't attend our wedding because SHE was terminally sick!!)

It's so frustrating dealing with those kind of people, especially after putting in all the time & effort! Sadly, some humans are just jerks and as you said, aren't worth the mental/emotional toll. I'm so amused about the repossession of the cake, though! Bravo!! 👏🏻 At least you had the satisfaction of saying, "If you won't pay, no cake for you!" 😂 That's a nice little lesson that taught them to treat the next baker better!

You have to edit your shop, but I think that Etsy has limited the amount of info that we can add to our policies. I'll have to go poke around to look, but since my shops are older I think that I have the old editing interface and the newer shops might have less space to put information in.

I understand people refunding for a quiet life if they're very busy / stressed / earning a lot but I'm stubborn & won't reward dishonest behaviour. I'll fight tooth & nail on principle if I'm certain someone's trying it on. Because if I refund, that encourages them & perpetuates the scammer cycle. Let them file a chargeback/ leave a bad review etc... I'm not going to make any aspect of their shady tactics easier for them. That said, I'm very lucky (probably mainly because of low-ish customer volume), that the vast majority of my dealings are really positive. Your cake stories are outrageous. Had similar customers when I worked in kitchens. Everything was wonderful until they left 🙄

Hello Kara, I love your contents and videos since 2021, could you make a video for best sizing for Etsy listing images. They have changed ratio square to 4:3. It is really important to get customer attention on our listings. Some of my listing images can not crop with this sizes also I can't do the best form (pixel x pixel ) which is suitable for new algorithm. Thank you for all your contents, videos and also lovely fb group

Regarding the Etsy protection plan, are we paying for the refund? Our policy is no refunds and sometimes people are complaining that it’s not what they expected, like in this case, something was lowercase and they thought it should be uppercase for a name on a card, but it was clear how it should be in the listing photo. They wanted it redone, but I recommended that they file a claim and re-purchase. Perhaps that was the wrong advice? I’m not sure what Etsy would say regarding some thing that is just “not what I expected.“

  • @KaraBuntin

Anything that's a "not as described" claim isn't going to be paid for by purchase protection, that will be judged by Etsy. I had a customer say something wasn't as described and they sided with me and refunded it out of Etsy's funds, but if they had sided with the customer I would have had to pay for the return.
