Glenn's death was needed in order to push the story forward and to introduce new plotlines. I also don't understand how one could think his death was too gory. It's a zombie show. What do you expect lol? As for the cliffhanger, it would have been way better if they showed Abraham getting Lucille'd in the S6 finale and then surprised us with Glenn's death in the S7 premiere. That way, people wouldn't have had to wait just to see who died and Abraham's death wouldn't have been overshadowed by Glenn's as much

Dang, i have to disagree with Andy here. I caught up with twd since s5, when i was still in highschool. The whole s7 premiere was like a point of no return for me, i thought to myself - this is it. From now on, everything is possible, no one is safe - The bigger dissapointment for me was that those expectations were never fulfilled. Except from carl's death and the pike scene, there were no more imo shockers, no more risks taken and i dislike that i'm seeing this aw in the spinoffs. Now that i think about it, maybe if the show didnt go so far in the day will come, it would have kept its essence and the uncertainty of safety would have felt more real, rather than most of them becoming post apocalyptic demi-gods

The season 7 premier needed to be as brutal as it was to drive home what a bad guy Negan was. That's why I love season 7 so much. It was the first time the group was truly broken with nothing to do but play by Negan's rules. It played out nearly the same way in the comics minus Abraham. I will never understand why so many people disliked that moment or season 7 as a whole.

My two cents: If we had to pick between two iconic moments kept the same for TV and the options were Rick losing his hand or Negan killing Glenn, I’d rather have seen Rick lose his hand. I’m 100% not against the violence of Glenn’s death, but Glenn in the comics was just a solid B+ character. He was nowhere near the ultra beloved Glenn that Steven Yeun gave us, and that didn’t sit well when translated to tv. The loss was FAR greater.

Glen's death could've been so much worse. It was pretty tame compared to Noah's face getting ripped apart.

Honestly I think we should’ve seen Abraham killed at the season 6 finale because if season 7 premiered we would’ve mourned Abraham for months and then they could’ve surprised us with Glenn because it would tell us no one is safe and now we would mourn 2 characters. Also I feel bad for Abraham because he got overshadowed by Glenn’s death but still if they had done that then we wouldn’t have been this angry when the cliffhanger happened because if we saw Abraham killed in season 6 by Negan then we would’ve mourned for him while we waited .

Andrew's comments are very difficult to me, tbh. I guess we're in the spill the tea era for this show. My take is that that scene did kill the show, good or not. If (I was an AMC exec) probably would have removed it. If I was Gimple it would be 50/50. You have to find a balance between artistic integrity and audience retention and killing off one of your main characters in a major TV show I think was always going to go down worse than the comic book. If they wanted to redeem Negan as well, I personally think something else should have happened and it would have been easier for audiences to swallow. Killing Glenn in that way came too early in the show IMO, it was too impactful that it couldn't be topped, and that's something reserved for when you get towards the end of the show (the example you. brought up with Howard on BCS happened 5 episodes before the end, they could afford to do something like that). Walking Dead did get too trigger happy, but I would say Game of Thrones and some other major dramas in that era did too. And then it fucked up the stories they could tell and things went off the rails. Having a main character and a thesis is important. Without it it's just a broadcast show where random shit happens every week. These big drama shows needed to be grounded to something, an idea, a character. A lot of them lost it. My mother quit watching it that night as well. She was one of the 7 million. What you said about it being "too real" is true. It wasn't the gore. I feel like no one cares about The Boys' violence as much because it's just stupid. AMC always goes to a gritty place and it was that "real" death that freaked people out. Artistically? Probably a good decision. Business wise? Terrible, awful decision. IMO they were never going to win here. With 17 million viewers it was always going to be a crapshoot. And Gimple never did a good job artistically after that either to keep the remaining folks on board. So neither camp really won. It was never going to work out.

Going back, those episodes are some of the best in the show, its such an intense watch for two or three straight episodes, and they were really building up negan so much before he finally showed up. But the cliffhanger was such a horrible way to watch it live. AMC was acting like they could do anything because of breaking bad being so amazing. Also they kept faking out glenns death before it really happened, it kind of cheapened it. They cliffhangered him again before that with the dumpster scene.

The whole show just felt so empty after Glenn died

What happened that having Glenn around for would have added to the scene? If anything Glenn not being at pivotal moments in the story is much more compelling than if he were. I just don’t understand what happened in the second half of the series that Glenn needed to be there for

I totally agree with you, the cliffhanger was the big mistake, just saying that it was the 2nd cliffhanger for Glenn, first one was with Nikolas. A friend told me that she felt all that cliffhangers with Glenn was an insult, as if they(showrunners) were playing with the viewers and she simply didn't like it and stopped watching the twd after

I believe the cliffhanger really diminished Glenn’s death in the show when it should’ve been as impactful as it should’ve been. We see Glenn in his entirety in S6 and then S7 starts and Glenn just gets killed after Abraham. Glenn being super integral in the show and then he’s just killed without any proper lines or build up to his death, just killed like he is secondary character. If he would’ve just been shown to have actually died at the end of S6 then it would’ve at least been better.

I don’t think it was the gore, it was the character that was killed. They could have done the Abraham death and had him had the same death as comic Glenn and it wouldn’t have caused as much controversy

I have a lot to say here. Glenn was an awesome character but he was soft, it might have been unrealistic for him to survive All Out War anyway unless something was done with his character to flip a switch in him, maybe something regarding Maggie? Anyway, I think his death was brilliant, as was Abraham's. Some things I don't like though is how All Out War was handled with things like the pacing and how everyone just seemed to have mostly forgotten Abraham was also a victim to Negan. Regarding another thing with Abraham, he's one of my favourite characters but I think he would have died in that line up one way or another because he was a threat. He was strong and at the same time, he showed defiance to Negan with his stare, with the way he almost physically stood up to Negan like he was presenting himself as a challenge and Negan saw that, Negan knew if Abraham survived, he could be a problem. I still enjoyed both of their deaths a lot but one thing I despise about the entire Saviours arc was killing Carl for seemingly shock value while also screwing Chandler Riggs over (like how Riggs moved house to be closer to the filming locations and that just didn't matter to Gimple). I've always viewed Rick as the engine for the show and that Carl was his fuel, everything Rick had done up to that point was for Carl's good, Carl's life and safety and Carl's future. I didn't stop watching the show after Carl's death and I also still watch everything TWD puts out but I can't deny that it's become a lot more infuriating and dull for me to watch at times without Carl and Rick around. Without Rick and Carl, it makes everything in TWDU, at least for me, feel a bit directionless and annoying because of all the wasted potential. I even like the idea of the CRM storyline with Rick being taken away by them after sacrificing himself on the bridge because it would have been awesome to have the main show end with Daryl, Michonne and Carl going to look for Rick and maybe Carol would stay home to take care of Judith and RJ. As a side note, I also feel that AMC destroyed the CRM's potential and the build up they'd fed them these past 5 or 6 years. As for the reason Gimple gave of Carl's death happening so that Rick would spare Negan? I think that would've worked much better with Morgan dying because Morgan built the cell that Negan was eventually placed in and Morgan and Rick were together at the start of the apocalypse. Morgan dying but maybe telling Rick in his last moments that he wants the war to stop so that the kids of Alexandria can be safe and not die like Duane did. He could've explained to Rick as he's dying that he never wants Rick or anyone else to experience the pain of losing a child. it could've lead to Rick placing Negan in the cell that Morgan built, I think that would've been amazing. Plus, on top of it all, it would've meant that Morgan wouldn't have been sent to Fear the Walking Dead to have his character butchered.

The argument falls apart when u take into account that there’s a scene in season 1 where they gut a walker to see what it ate and the camera gives us a panoramic,clear view of the whole process. The walking dead was always a gory show and gory deaths for the protagonists is only reasonable

I get it was pretty grousome but I still think glenns death is one of if not the most important in the show. I mean it happened in its source material as well and was the perfect setup for the next phase of the show and made negans introduction very impactful. The real shame is how gimple then proceeded to fumble s7 and s8

Regardless of whether it was Glenn in the end, the same thing would have happened at some point if they had killed either Daryl or Carol. Shows like TWD always have the problem that they go on too long and at some point a gigantic mistake happens. I thought it was good that a large number of casual viewers left back then. These were often the same people who were spamming everywhere that we would riot if Daryl died in the line up. Glenn was never the problem for me. I thought he was a great character, but his story was completely told. They could have given him some time with his child, but the tragedy behind it is much better this way. And Glenn in all out war? I don't know. I think it was good that he died where his morals were still very positive. I think it was rather stupid how they handled the cliffhanger and Abraham's death. And Carl doesn't even need to be mentioned. There's a difference between killing off characters where the story has been told and killing off characters where plenty of story is left to tell. That's why I don't understand a lot of people who wanted to see Maggie dead instead of Glenn. Changes from the comics were always interesting, but come on. That would be so weird. With Glenn we would then have the 50000 revenge story instead of just letting the character die where he was one of the only characters whose morals had not been completely destroyed by that world. I would have loved to see Abraham in S7 and 8 as he certainly could have added more to the story. I think it's a shame that the show often tried to score points with shockers rather than with logical story writing. Which is simply so much more important in a drama show. In a show like TWD, you can't just kill anyone you want. It might have worked in the comics, but in a show, you have to be much more careful with things like that. Unfortunately, in the end we exist in a reality where characters like Carl had to die on the show. I still cry over all the wasted scenes that could have shown Carl and Judith in S9 - 11. Nothing against Daryl, but my god the last episode would have been so much stronger if Carl had been there trying to save Judith somehow.

I'm so sick of The Walking Dead discourse and I'm so sick of all of the bad fan theories and clickbait videos about the franchise. I think I'm just going to stop consuming Walking Dead social media content and just watch the show and form my own opinions like how I did in season 1-3

Your right it’ was a good idea to kill Glenn off because it made Maggie a stronger character she “brave and beautiful”

My take on this is that Glenn's death was fine, but Abe should've lived at least till the ending stages of All Out War, if not even more, as his death was over-shadowed by Glenn's and forgotten, he could've helped the show massively moving forward as we'd loose Carl and Rick soon.

Yeah, but he was dead for a long while by that point in the comics. His death was needed to further Sasha, Eugene, and Rosita’s characters. In the show, Denise got Abraham’s comic fate. He actually lived longer than his comic counterpart, so his time was up.

@@BoogSReviews I found Sasha and Rosita uninteresting the whole show, and they were never strangers to change the comics decisions, look at Carol, the real problem is that his death was kinda pointless in hindsight, i am not saying he should've lived till the end, but it just would've helped for him to live longer and killed later on to make Eugene's arc better.
