The VW Beetle: The best selling single model car ever made

Welcome to Auto Chatter! Todays discussion is about the Volkswagen Type 1, better known as the Bug or Beetle. Join me for a tour starting with its inception, dark past prior to WW2,becoming a peace icon, and winning the hearts and minds of millions. I have other aircooled VW Videos too showcasing the Type 2 Microbus, VW Thing, Karmann Ghia, and the Dune Buggy.

Another top-notch video 👍 The Type 1 Beetle taught me a new word- "Ubiquitous"- which means "seeming to be everywhere". And if you lived in the era you'd understand why. Like the Model T it truly was a car for the masses: cheap to buy, easy to fix, and having good fuel economy too. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing a bunch of them. Odd to me is that now you rarely see one and nice specimens are high-value collectibles. Here's a trivia tidbit: The VW exhaust sounds like no other 4-cylinder for a reason. In designing the engine they found the #3 cylinder overheated so they solved that by firing it's spark 3 degrees earlier than the timing for the other cylinders. Like the rest of the car it was simple engineering that simply worked.

One of the BEST and FAMOUS cars ever built, in my opinion!! I'm remembering the car floating commercial, pretty cool. I have 2 copies of that famous book.

Yeah I still think it's crazy that I can daily drive my 62-year-old VW Bug around town, and up and down the freeways with today's traffic. In some ways I actually think it's easier to drive around town than a modern car, you just sit down turn the key and fires right up the seating position is perfect to view out the window is phenomenal, and just step on the gas and it goes. I get a rush of endorphins as I open up the door and start to sit down in the seat, because driving it truly is one of my favorite things to do. I truly am addicted to driving my bug, if I go more than 2 hours without driving it, I honestly start to feel withdrawals. Like last night for example it was 11:00 p.m., I had nowhere to be besides going to bed, but I literally could not get it out of my head and I had to go just cruise around the block. I mentioned that to some fellow Volkswagen people and turns out I'm not the only one that's that deep into the addiction. But anyways, thanks for your wolf that out comment, it was fun to read.

I owned two of the air-cooled Beetles. Great cars. My son now owns a 2017 Beetle which is pretty fun to drive I have to admit.

Most interesting video, also , films made in the 60/70 usually had a beetle or two in shot, and a impressive achievement to sell such big numbers ,for a simple piece of engineering. Thank you for Video.Happy 2023.

Great video. I daily a 67 Beetle still, and it mostly keeps up with everyone else still! Also relatively inexpensive to fix and maintain, although it requires more regular maintenance than most other cars these days.

Awesome! I daily drive my 62 bug, with its 1200 40hp. My drive requires me to go up and down the grapevine in california ( a steep mountain grade).
