The Voron Clone Wars: Sovol SV08 v.s. Troodon 2.0

Ғылым және технология

The SV08 is a derivative of the Voron 2.4, with far less assembly required. But Sovol isn't the first company to try to commercialize a Voron. Prior to the SV08 came the Troodon 2.0 from Formbot. In this video I compare and contrast these two Voron clones, seeking to answer the question: which one will reign supreme?

I think the Sv08 is not meant really for those wanting to tinker. Although tons of mods are already being released and developed giving the choice to change things. I ordered the SV08 because i wanted a Voron style printer and didnt really want to tinker and upgrade , but may if i want. The price was a factor aswell , I wanted a 350mm build volume and the troodon and voron were way out of my price range . Considering also everyone i see with a voron never stay to the stock kit which adds more cost with almost no ceiling. I got the SV08 with enclosure and will be printing a different top so to keep the 345mm .

No, lots of the buyers in the FB group are already making mods. And many are printing upgrade parts before they even get the machine. Nadir Nadir already made a top hat for the enclosure so you can use the whole build volume. And a clicky probe. And a few other things. We now have Bambu style feet, lots of other printed stuff, and many macros to do things better than originally planned, Sovol has upgraded firmware already too. It's probably the most heavily modded printer that almost nobody has yet.

Thank you for the video. The Sovol SV08 does come with a touch screen upgrade, and an enclosure. Once those are added on the two machines are much closer in both spec and price, but still with a fairly sizeable gap in favor of the Sovol. While the Sovol is still able to be modded, the Troodon 2.0 still seems to be closer to what a tinkerer would want as a base to play with. I honestly think it's a tough call between those two.

I have a troodon pro and regret buying it. The extrusions are not square, the Z and xy belt tensioners are trash, the hotend that it comes with is garbage (mine had heat creep then got pushed off center and melted into the steathburner carriage., and now after hours of various calibrations it will not print a acceptable first layer. And the proprietary tool head pcb is very limiting.

I feel like the sovol with options for a cast aluminum bed and beefier pulleys plus enclosure would be solid. Maybe modified print head to accept other nozzle types too. Add beacon or eddy. Not sure of total cost, but they could offer that kind of printer for $1000 and still be competitive in the market.

I'm leaning toward an SV08, but I'll ditch the reverse Bowden tube because I print a lot of TPU. I'll mount a bearing spindle filament reel holder on top (or a low friction heated filament drier), with an enclosure with a peaked roof to allow full Z print height, preferably with magnetically attached sides that can pop off easily for printing PLA. Much as I like open source software and hardware, I'm OK with the proprietary SV08 hot end because it has good enough flow rate, as long as replacement hot ends remain readily available and inexpensive. I'd be very interested in a cast aluminum bed upgrade as long as it didn't warp when heated. It's difficult to make a 350 mm square bed that is flat and doesn't warp.

My troodon 2.0 pro was ordered with a rapido 2 uhf and got a cht nozzle. While I ordered it as an option it did not come shipped with it. It shipped separately from China and I had to print a new piece to make it fit. The printer cfg is also half baked. When filament runs out the print head continued to move even though klipper has acknowledged the runout. I also recieved scratched enclosure panels. From what I read on the site it has a double sided plate though the smooth side does not look like any pei smooth sheet I've had before. The start print macro is also not fully done so out of the gate nothing would print for me even with the pre-made profile in orca. I also loaded octoeverywhere on the biqu board but that quickly overloaded the cpu and killed 2 of my large prints. Despite these anomalies I still love it. I have been printing asa for the first time in this machine as my other is a p1p enclosed. The first layers are fantastic as you stated. I printed d several large parts on the textured side of the plate in asacf without ever cleaning it or anything and had no warping. Overall the quality is very good and had one of the most stellar benchies I've ever seen (with the original hotend too).

SV-08 is a 350^2 core-xy for half the price of the Troodon which isn't well known in the consumer market. Anyone thinking of putting in a grand for a Troodon would just get the K2 bundle and have a better supported printer with an AMS clone thrown in for close to the same price. I wonder why the Troodon wasn't hyped to the heavens two years ago when the X1C opened everyone's eyes. Was it not ready for prime time at that point? Is it now? I think Voron already has the hearts of the tinkerers and diehards, but the Sovol is appealing to those with an X1 or P1 who are chafing at 256mm and want to upgrade their capacity without delving into BIY or forking out four digits for the pleasure. Just my opinion, of course, but that describes me.

  • @reubertt

I found the comparison very interesting, it went into several important details. I think Sovol did a good job with the SV08, as there is a market that is not a printer modifier. And there are also markets that value every penny in price, in my country even $100 is almost equivalent to $1000 due to taxes and currency appreciation. Creality decided to "fight" with Bambulab, Sovol took advantage of the SV06 Hype and will seek another slice of the market that could really work.

I have a Troodon 2 Pro but have not unboxed it. It has been sitting in its box for about 4 weeks now. It is a matter of space and how would we move it when we move and a move is more likely to happen hopefully in the next year. When I purchased the Troodon 2 Pro the Sovol was not even released nor had I heard of it at the time. The question of moving would still have been an issue so it too would likely still be in its box. I do appreciate the video comparing the two systems. At this time I probably would not have purchased either. I was impulsive and got the Troodon 2 Pro and after we move I will probably be glad to have it. And if I didn't have the unit I have it would probably be the unit I purchased for my next printer based on the features.

You're never going to print 500C materials on either of these printers. The materials that come to mind for 500C are PEEK and PEK and both require a heated chamber hotter than the belts, motors, plastic parts, etc can handle. If you want to print 500C materials you need a printer you'd be comfortable placing in your oven. VisionMiner has their 22 IDEX for $15k which is very well priced for what it offers at that level of engineering grade FDM printing.

I wonder why so many are obsessed with the term clone? By the logic, EVERY printer on the market is a clone of something that came before. Also, that means every car and truck is a clone of the first car and truck. So every single thing in our daily lives is based off of an original design. So even Bambu, Voron, Prusha, Creality and every other printer is based in some part off of something that came before. So just call everything a clone.

All well and good, but both manufacturers Don't ship everywhere in the EU from the EU due to not strictly legal business registrations preventing certain cross border movements, (I has asked and checked) and both only offer to ship to the countries they won't ship to from the EU, from China instead, offering to try to again break the law by illegally marking down the price on the invoice which doesn't work and actually leads local customs to impose 100% duty. So until both companies begin honest trading and honest full registration of thier EU warehouses they cannot be considered honest or trustworthy

I have the klipper screen sitting here but it's kind of pointless since I'm a hard mainsail user with my other klipper machines. The Troodon has a hidden secret though. The smooth side of the build plate isn't PEI. It's a PET/PEO type that ABS sticks to like glue. It's amazing. As always, great content Taylor.

However, the term 'proprietary' is probably not appropriate when describing parts of the SV08 (like the nozzle and motherboard) since the license/specifications and are open source for these parts. You are incorrect about the sv08 having worse input shaping results than the troodon. Max accel values are not how you compare IS results. You have to look at the visual graph itself, along with net vibrations after the shaper is applied. The sv08’s graph is FAR superior to the troodon’s. The ideal graph is a single, steep peak with no noise. A bad graph has many peaks and lots of noise. The troodon had this in spades. It’s very easy to draw false conclusions by looking only at the recommended accel values, and it appears as though this is what you’ve done.
