The "VOR Orienter"
Here's a little self-made tool that will help anyone struggling to answer FAA-type VOR questions on their knowledge exams. This tool offers the added advantage of training the student's mind to think in terms of how the VOR works. No, it's not used in the airplane. It's intended only for ground-type knowledge test questions. More tools at: www.rodmachado.com.

Once again, Rod, you have hit a home run. The VOR Orienter is one more reason to continue singing your praises to my student pilot friends. Your love for aviation, generosity of spirit, and creativity consistently shine in your videos. THANK YOU!

Huge thanks to you for producing these types of vids. I am based in the UK and as a middle aged PPL student in my early stages of training, I am finding the technical side quite challenging to get to grips with at times. Your explanations are making digesting the wordy and complex technical information alot easier to understand.
As always, pure, simple genius, thanks.

Your video on VOR orienters is the most straightforward explanation on youtube. It took too long to find your channel, but glad I did. Thank you!

Wish I would have had this tip when I took my written. It's great, and I'm going to pass it along. Thanks
Wow! What a great little nifty thing for those VOR questions on the instrument exam, that drive most people crazy! I did my instrument rating a couple years back, and this would have been a GODSEND for those mind-bending VOR and HSI questions! 😁 In any case, I'm now in the process of becoming a CFI / CFII, and will definitely use this to help my future instrument students! THANK YOU Mr. Machado! 😁 ...Oh, and I live and die by that "airspace memory aid" of yours!

Even easier method is to remember that you are Always at 'From Radial" (outbound) in respect to VOR. (direction does not matter). When going towards VOR simply add 180 to your existing "FROM" radial. With this concept I was able to figure both questions out in 5 seconds each without having to draw anything. And I am not even a student pilot or aviator But I love to read IFR material. :))
Thank you so much. This tool is fantastic. You've hit the nail on the head.

I am getting back into flight instructing (CFI CFII MEI) after a long time. I kept my CFI ticket but was not teaching. I got my self current and now have two students Pvt getting Inst rating, CFI getting Instrument add on. So I need to teach or teach how to teach to someone else. I wanted some refreshers, *I thought of one person Rod Machado. Hope you are well.*

Thanks. A shameful admission after 30 years ppl, active flying since 2016 (kids finally off the payroll and dropped 50 lb so I could actually FIT in. GA plane): this is the FIRST time I’ve heard the term, “zone of ambiguity”.

Maybe they did not use that term "back in the day" so to speak? A lot changes in aviation, especially terminology and such! I did my private pilot training in 2016 (although I had been following aviation well before that), and have noticed that a lot of practices / procedures that were common or used in the past are simply different today!

At 1:17, imagine the cartoon guy with "angry eyebrows".😠 Now, his eyes & glasses show you how to draw the VOR Orienter! To me, the top 2 quadrants look like a pair of glasses with angry eyebrows. The bottom 2 quadrants look exactly like the top, except for the F and T flags. I hope this helps!
Darn! I wish that I had seen something like this years ago on my exams.....
This is great! I wish I knew this a couple days ago! Very helpful

I think that the HSI's (why are they $3,000?) are more intuitive than whatever this instrument is. The HSI rotates so that the top is always the direction the aircraft is pointing.
Please could you do another video with ILS approch
