This is so interesting. In 83 he was all over the place but had a 'tone' in his voice, but by late 84 and 85 he had started to develop strength to support his tone. Yes, it's an acquired taste and I don't know if you've ever listened to Gunners for a couple of hours without a break but the voice starts to grate after a while. I'd say with the recording of appetite Mike Clink would have purposely structured the song order etc to give the listener a break from the high pitch constantly...actually I just checked, and that's exactly what has happened. It's So Easy, Brownstone, Think About you, are spaced every 2-3 songs in the album order and these songs are often in his baritone register. One thing I noticed was the band were loose as fuck early on, and you can hear them getting tighter by 85. I'd love it if anyone saw them actually play in 84 and let us know what they were like. i presume a heap of attitude and energy, loud but loose. Good lesson to any young bands out there, play as often as you possibly can over 2-3 years and develop that tightness and you will be so far Infront of other bands. Work hard early.

Your point on the high pitch really hits home. You can, at this of me writing this, find a full concert of GNR from the Roxy in 86. It's GNR in the prime, which is rare, but you'll find yourself desperately wanting a break from that high pitch at different points throughout the set. My favorite song on the set is the closer: Goodnight Tonight. Sharing is caring: Don't Cry in 1985 is probably the best acoustic and vocal version of the song you can find on KZread. It makes me sad they didn't record/release a production version of the song on Appetite. I much prefer this to the Use Your Illusion recording. Lastly, a lucky viewer can occasionally find Patience recorded live at Whiskey in 1988. I'm not sure how it gets flagged for a copy-right strike so fast, but it's never been uploaded for long. That version of Patience is without Matt, but vocally almost a 1:1 match for the recorded version.

High voices were very popular in the early 80's. I love the experimentation and eventual perfection to HIS style and taste. Changing from a club band where you're trying to be a bad ass to a money making machine. He figured it out somewhere around the formation of Gn'R. But like Dave Grohl said "bands need to go play and just suck" I love this element. You don't see that anymore.

I like the raspy element but for me it was waaay to high pitched at that time. It's like he still hadn't figured out how to properly use the technique i'd say. I think from 86-89 he found the perfect balance. then in the 90s it's a completely different voice. and in 2006-09 is also a completely different voice. but those were the 3 best times for Axl's singing imo

I agree, that high pitch is like a child's voice, but if Axl had used that voice in some songs, it would be great because that voice can be very shrill but it's too good to waste like that.

I’d say 86 To 89 is his best voice. During UYI tour, he struggled a lot live, especially in 1992….it’s painful to listen to some of this live recordings.

I'd say the early vocals were too raw and the recording didn't capture all the frequencies, resulting in bleeding edge high pitched sound.
