This was the Acceptance Set version. They performed this a day after winning the Chorus Contest, before the Quartet Finals. It’s tradition for the winning chorus to perform their contest set from the previous day again when accepting their Chorus Champs trophy in the lead-in to the Quartet Finals. But _this_ time, they made a change in the choreography from the contest version they’d performed the day before. You see, under the BHS Contest & Judging rules, songs that are specifically patriotic to a specific nation are not permitted in contest (neither are hymns or other religious songs specific to a particular religion). This is to prevent trying to psychologically “game” the judges by trying to appeal to their personal religious and/or patriotic fervor (“Hey, this judge is from Scotland [or has Scottish ancestry]! Let’s do _Scotland the Brave!”_ - “This judge is a Lutheran! Let’s do _A Mighty Fortress is Our God!)”._ Part of the concern is that judges might recognize that they’re trying to do that, and adjust their scoring _downward_ to try to compensate for the psychological aspect above and beyond the actual merits of the actual performance. Best to avoid the issue altogether, and that’s why that rule exists. Songs that are _generically_ spiritual and/or patriotic are fine, so long as not for a _specific_ religion (including major religions as a whole, not just individual sects) or nation. _When Johnny Comes Marching Home_ is patriotic, but nothing in the lyrics specifically references the USA, so it squeaks by, so long as nothing in the _performance_ would _also_ directly reference the USA. So, in the contest version performed the previous day, at the end, “Johnny” comes out from his hiding place behind the chorus as he did here, but does _not_ carry a flag, and his camo military uniform has no nation-specific insignia on it that can be seen. Instead, four of the front-row guys lifted “Johnny” up on their shoulders and rotated him around 360° as he waved his arms in joy at being home. This rule applies _only_ to songs being sung _in actual contest,_ that are being _judged._ In all other cases, even when on the same venue and stage as the contest session, the chorus or quartet can do whatever they want (within reason), including religion-specific hymns or nation-specific patriotism, since the issue with judges being psychologically “gamed” no longer applies. So when they came back to do this _Acceptance_ Set version of this song, the VM (being a _very_ patriotic bunch of guys!) did the different version of the ending choreography (which is also the only version they will perform at shows and such) seen starting at 3:48 in this video: “Johnny” waving the big U.S.A. Flag.
