Gastão Gal I don't it is spiritual. Rather it is a comment on the human condition, with only the Christmas verse being spiritual. Enjoy it for the visceral pleasure it gives. Love Leonard Cohen.

I've only just realised (after a year ... boy I'm sharp) ... Vocal majority sings this piece as it was intended: "you" not "yaaaa". Why am I not surprised. Leonard Cohen would thank you guys.

@@allisonbergh4429 Thanks, Allison. Apparently, most of the world would agree with you, but Cohen would not. His original lyric is "you", not "ya" and that's the way he and Vocal Majority sing it. Since Leonard Cohen experimented with this song with over 70 known verses, I don't think he would be alarmed at any small changes. His favourite version was by kd Lang at the Vancouver Olympics.

I don't understand this reference to Jesus "A child was born..." I don't think that was in Cohen's original version and I don't think he meant for his song to be changed to a Christian version rather than a spiritual one without a particular religion. It's a great performance of course, just curious about why the lyrics were changed, unless they were there and I just never saw them.

Also Cohen distilled his version from 60+ verses in the beginning. I just listened to a 30+ minute podcast TODAY about Cohen & his magnum opus. If I can remember the name of the show I'll come back & add it.
