The Victorians wore HOW many clothes in a day??? 😱

To be honest four outfits isn’t even that much! Only one more outfit than most people wear really (Pjs, work clothes, after work comfy clothes)

We do the same thing nowadays! To put this into modern context: 1. Wake up wearing your pyjama’s 2. Change into a bathrobe for breakfast 3. Put on your office outfit to go to work 4. Change into sweats once you get home for lounging around the house We haven’t changed that much 😉

Or you wake up in sweats bc you don’t have time for fancy pajamas (no offense intended, if you wear cute pajamas to bed, more power to you! 😊), then continue to wear sweats for breakfast (if you have time for it, sometimes it’s just shoving a granola bar into your mouth practically whole and chugging some juice or water to wash it down), usually already in my work clothes at that point, because I only use my bathrobe for, well, bathing. Then, if you’re me, unless you’re already in your work clothes, you put them on and go to work in scrubs, which are extremely comfortable and quite comparable to sweats in my opinion, and then change into sweats again when you get home (if you get home that night, sometimes you have to stay longer) So some of us are “sweats all day” kind of people lol

In addition to what the other commenter said, they also used natural fibers for clothing. Natural fibers breath so much better than synthetic. They are really great at keeping you warm in cool weather and cool in the heat. I’ll be totally fine wearing my wool skirts in the middle of summer, but my sheer polyester blouses make me so sweaty.

Lightweight wool keeps you cool and dry in the summer and it is odor resistant. Victorian era is a pretty long period of time….1837-1901. So I would simply add that the style and function of the clothes vary depending on the decade…. Cycling suit comes pretty late, teagowns would have been a staple throughout. Even the shape of the corset changes….

Teagowns, even, are a late 1860s to 1890s thing. The closest I can see to a tea gown before then are examples of "seaside evening dress" (dress meaning outfit, not the garment itself), which was long sleeved and made in a wrap style with a petticoat showing, and "fancy wrappers" for at home guests or invalids.

Average people (farmers, maids, workers etc. etc.) usually had like two sets of clothing - one for everyday use (with maybe multiple parts that would need to be cleaned because of stains from work) and one set for better occasions (mostly worn to church and similar rare opportunities).

At middle class they'd also be employing servants too. So, they would have the ability to chooses what chores and cleaning they would be doing if their estate was too big for just their servants. Also, the Angel of the Household myth would also lead to a middle class lady probably doing less chore/cleaning than we might expect there too.

Doing a hard physical labour with no bra is very challenging for women with bigger chests and corsets distribute the weight of breasts evenly. Back support - absolutely. Corsets are a legit medical tool even today and can be prescribed by a doctor, usually to children to correct their backs before too late, or to adults too. I have a sedentary job and when I started wearing corsets under my clothes, my back pain went almost completely away. Can they be fetishized? Absolutely. But apart from a brief moment in history, when it was fashionable to lace them really tightly, harmfully tightly (I believe you refer to those infamous images of squished organs), corsets sewn to fit their wearer accompanied and supported women throughout the ages. If you don't believe my (wo)mansplaining, ask any historian. I think Hollywood created this myth. And presented it to generations who didn't have personal experience with wearing them, so we accepted the narrative without questioning. Funny how it works.

I wear 4 outfits in a day, occasionally 5! Pajamas when I wake up, change into my work clothes, change into something comfy when I get home, then pajamas again. Occasionally if I take a shower too long before bed, I won't change into pajamas right away, I'll change into different relaxed clothes. That outfit is SO PRETTY

plenty of people nowadays wear just as many outfits depending on their routines tbh. work uniforms, loungewear, athletics, pajamas... it's just changing to the most useful outfit. why get all dressed up if they were only doing chores around the house? we have the same thought process as they did. it isn't the habit that changed, just the clothes

  • @inchdeep1

It's just like how for instance you wake up and change from your pajamas to your sweatpants to do chores and then you realise you need groceries so you put on a pair of jeans, then that night you have a dinner out so you put on a dress. That's 4 pairs of outfits...it's just more simpler now since there aren't as many layers

@@IISheireenII yep. Even back then, high-society/rich folks were expected to wear something new to decent-sized events, iirc. Unfortunately, there are people who are so desperate to not be seen as poor or unfashionable that they try to “prove” they have money by wearing new clothes for every outing (even if they can’t really afford to). I’m sure there were some people like that in antiquity too, trying to show off by living beyond your means is nothing new, but I can’t help but feel that social media has made the tendency more prevalent.
