Very good and spooky video. I was caught off guard by the whole "Tim Burton hates musicals" thing because he is associated with a few. I know that he did not make A Nightmare before Christmas, but he is always going to be associated with it and it's a musical, and so is Corpse Bride. Maybe he only hates live-action musicals? But why was he picked to direct the Dumbo remake and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Man his career has been almost as weird as his style, but it's hard not to like him.
@Oturan20
8 ай бұрын
While Burton didn't make the movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas", he did write and illustrate the poem/picture-book that the movie was based on, so it being called "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" is more in line with adaptations of books that throw the author's name into the title like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" or "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein".
In Burton's version Benjamin Barker was falsely convicted and sent to Australia. If he spent 15 years there he arrived in 1831 which meant he went to Port Jackson or to Western Australia. Besides convict gang work he might have been "employed" to work in a home but that was mostly reserved for female convicts. Punishment was usually 50 lashes with a cat o nine tails and many received 100, enough to leave no skin on a person's back. One Convict was recorded getting 300 lashes. No wonder his hair got that grey streak and he came back on Beast mode!

I feel this is one of Depp's best roles aside from his usual of Captain Jack. He covers as a monster and yet a villain, a tragic one at that. I find his singing charming and yet eerie, no silly nonsense and drunken stupor. True that Burton kinda did that on purpose, but despite him hating musicals, this actually worked.

@@aylawells921 "they haven’t sung before is correct" Is not correct. 'They never sang in a musical before' would have been correct. Those two sentences doesn't even a little mean the same thing. It feel like you are twisting a sentence with some intense backwards logic in order for it to make sense.
The original version of the Stephen Sondheim music was meant more as a dark comedy than merely a story about somebody on a murderous rampage and seeking revenge. I remember watching the "Behind the Scenes" documentary about it from HBO (before greed consumed them via their streaming service), and Sondheim himself noticed right away that Tim Burton's film adaptation took advantage of graphically showing lots of blood.
I actually liked the Burton version. The imagery and how color is used to demonstrate wealth and happiness was done really well. I'm gonna have to look up the Songhiem because I haven't heard of that until now

To everyone commenting to tell me that Johnny Depp is a musician and plays guitar… I NEVER SAID OTHERWISE! 😂 I simply stated he is not a SINGER, which he’s not! Before Sweeney Todd he had never provided his own vocals for a performance. Look it up if you don’t believe me (like I did before writing this episode). The sheer number of people hearing what they want to just so they can comment “um akshully” is a bit disappointing… 🫥

I am so excited for this! Sweeney Todd was my FIRST favourite musical, thanks to my mom. We’re seeing it on Broadway in March and I feel like it’s an underrated musical/story overall. So glad you’re doing something for it
I have a beagle named Cooper. He was a rescue named Copper but my mom really hated that...although Cooper looks exactly like the dog from the Fox & the Hound. So she changed it to Cooper (after Anderson/Sheldon -- I know, I know). STILL, even though he's sitting right next to me, delicately snoring, my heart pounded a little when you said he was in an oven. I confess I'm a helicopter parent and I constantly worry someone will steal him. Because he really is that cute. Stay the f*ck away from my dog, Jon.

Awesome! Can't wait for part 2. There is a gothic horror show called "penny dreadful" that basically has all of your iconic figures of gothic/horror fiction (Dracula, Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde, the wolf man, Dorian Gray, witches, demons, Victor Frankenstein and his monster, etc). In one episode, there is a scene in a theater where they are rehearsing a play on Sweeney Todd.
RIP Stephen Sondheim and Angela Landsbury.
My dad used to be a barber and right next to his chair was a big poster for Sweeney Todd
Sweeney todd himself is a very scary villain. And in the musical version of the Sweeney todd movie, it's very interesting that mrs lovett takes Toby in and tries to raise him as her own.

Absolutely love it can't wait for part 2. Spooky season on the solo channel going hard.
“He could have done the non musical version” 💀 interesting choice indeed
Okay, so just so you know Sweeney Todd, in the movie and musical adaptation, is actually an anti-villain. An anti-villain is a person with heroic goals or characteristics, but to achieve those goals they do very villainous things, the main difference between anti-villains and anti-heros is the moment when the end no longer justifies the means. If you want a classic example of an anti-villain is Magneto, his goal is to end the unfair treatment and horrible things done to mutants, but to get to this goal he does some extremely villainous things
Also there is a non-musical version starring Ben Kingsley.
"...how Tim Burton hates musicals..." I'm not surprised. The one thing that kept me from wholeheartedly enjoying the Burton version was the cuts to the script and score...namely, how all the choral parts were cut, which not only robbed us of "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", but left "God, That's Good!" without any TITLE PHRASE. I've always thought that it seemed as if Burton was AFRAID of the fact that it's a musical...now this confirms it.
The squeal of pure joy I gave out when learning you were covering this could not be replicated by a human.
Good and weird video, Jon. When I was younger, my parents would never let me see this movie or play either. Over the years, I realized why. I'm kind of glad they did not. Wild and bloody story! Thanks for explaining this story. I knew some things but not everything. Good grief! I thought Dracula and 13 Ghosts were wild. I'm glad no one does this these days. Good video. Happy Halloween, Jon! Take care.
Can I just say, thank you, thank you, thank you, so much for making this video it’s made my month. Partly because Helena’s in it and you mentioned her witch made my excitement triple in one second because she’s my absolute favourite. Incredible video Jon I can’t wait for part 2.

If this weren’t a musical, I don’t think I would like this film. I did not see the original performance on Broadway, but I did not find the performances bad on the film. They were pretty good. The actor who plays Anthony sends chills down my spine every time he sings Johanna. And Pretty Woman will always be my favorite song in it. I cannot talk badly about the singing in the film. I have seen way worse. And the film got me into the musical so that is not a bad thing.

Referring to Depp being able to sing--he had a band back when he was in 21 Jump Street. I had the cassette from the show and his song was amazing on the soundtrack.

Oh I feel your pain on South Pacific. I do love musicals, but that was a slug to get through.
The first filmed version of the Sweeney Todd story was released in 1936 starring the appropriately named Todd Slaughter.
I remember on an episode of Mysteries at the Church they said in medieval times there was this meat pie shop across the street from the church where the priests would eat, but eventually it was discovered that the owners were making the pies with human flesh! Maybe that was the inspiration for the human pies?
