The Verve - Man Called Sun BASS COVER w/ Rickenbacker 4005

Музыка

Here's one that fits the Rick's tone and style much better than anything New Order. One annoying thing about these Ricks is how much more quiet the bass pickup is than the treble pickup. This video has the pickups on neutral, but the blend all the way to the bass, which is the best way to get the loudest sound out of that pickup.
The All The Way cover was on the treble pickup as part of an attempt to get Peter Hook's sound, but it really is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, isn't it? I believe this volume disparity was an issue for all Rickenbacker basses pre-1972 (they then switched to high gain pickups). However, the famous Rickenbacker sound from the 60s was very much built on the smooth, warm tone of the bass pickup. The quietness would have never been an issue recording the bass, but for playing live, these are very much not basses you can crank.
Onto The Verve: Despite what Richard Ashcroft has spent the last 25 saying, this was a serious band with serious chemistry. The rhythm section of songs like Man Called Sun, Echo Bass, Gravity Grave, Sit and Wonder, and Major Force is untouchable, while there hasn't been another guitarist like Nick McCabe since. It's a shame Ashcroft sees more value in writing the same acoustic song over and over again than working with the other 3.

Those style of Rick basses are such an oddity. They sound like a hofner style semi hollow bass (well they are that) but they have a certain P Bass like sustain to them, can't put my finger on it.

I definitely see what you mean. I’d say these are almost like a p bass, Rick4001 and Gibson eb2 all in one. Honestly the sustain isn’t too great, the necks very very thin and action is high, so maybe the overall bass is a bit more Gibson eb2/epiphany rivoli than hofner. But yeah In this video with the bass pickup on and tone off, it’s a very similar tone to the hofner.

Lovely bass ….. what year? $$$$$$ I have a 77 4001, lovely guitars Rickenbackers! Living the dream right there with that bass! I’m a tad jealous tbh, although guitar is my main instrument!

@@paulfulker3354 It's a 1969. Jetglo 4005s are seemingly even rarer than the other colors and I usually see either 67s or 74s pop up, so needless to say I'm happy I've got it. Nothing beats a black hollow body for me.

this is fucking awesome. I really don't understand Richard Ashcroft. Those acoustic songs fucking suck, there's no energy. No fire. Nothing. THESE tracks have ALL the fire. I really don't understand his perspective.

Couldn't agree more! I've tried to give RA's solo work a chance and I can't get through anything since it's boring, lifeless and doesn't take any risks. The Verve as a band and the chemistry and creativity that makes their instrumentals is second to none imo and to Ashcroft's credit, he ties it all together. If you haven't heard the unreleased tracks from the Urban Hymns and Forth sessions, definitely give those a listen. All Ways are Maybes (Nick McCabe's pick for pest Verve song), Tina Turner, and Blue Pacific Ocean are lightyears ahead of any RA solo songs.
