Pete Salisbury has never gotten the kudos that he deservers for his unbelievable drumming skills on all of the Verves songs. This is just one more example of the technical skill and ability to grasp the needs of the song with his rhythm patterns. Damn Sabo....You nailed it. Listening to it objectively, the chords used are very similar to Lucky Man. Purely speculatively, maybe they thought it was too similar, and preferred Lucky Man over this. From what I've read, Ashcroft was the one who didn't want this released. Which was a mistake. This is indeed a beast.

From what I can gather it was recorded quite late in the UH sessions and by that point they had most of the album mapped out. Given they already had the singles planned (BSS, Lucky Man, The Drugs Don’t Work) I speculate that they decided it was too good to be an album track or b-side so held off on it for the next album, which ended up not coming out as the band split up. By the time they got to Forth I guess they just forgot about it.
“I left my will on the heat of the whispered trees…”
This is the frontier of modern Britpop laid out by the verve in the late 90's that Coldplay and other harnessed to make the great music of the 00's. The Urban Hymns session is of the most important sessions in British music.
Through the mornings of my despair I saw a crack of light I had to blink to see it there All heaven was shining in A new direction Keeping me, keeping me in All ways are maybes We never make up our mind When all ways are maybes You don't know if you should Stay put, sink, swim or die You don't know if you should Stay put, sink, swim or die A new direction is calling me I left my will on the heat of the whispered trees All you got is what you own Oh your words that I slowly burn All ways are maybes Why should I make up my mind All ways are crazy Stuck at the crossroads You just eat, sleep, drink and die Stuck at the crossroads You just eat, sleep, drink, get high Who are you and why you cry? Who are you and why you smile? I wanna learn to love, I hope that you try Who are you and why you cry? Why don't, why don't, why don't you cry Yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah All ways are maybes Why should I make up my mind All ways are maybes Stuck at the crossroads You just eat, sleep, drink, get high Who are you and why you cry? Ah, who are you and why you smile? Who are you and why you cry?

14 LOST SOULS , Epic track!
Hidden gem
I'm hammered and this song now make a lot of sense without being debauchery
It’s obvious why RA didn’t want these added to the deluxe version is simple. His own ego claimed UH was mostly his own work and his first truly solo album. Probably didn’t want the rest of the band receiving loyalties for these forgotten tracks.

I can totally agree as far as albums go. I never saw the Verve live only Richard in Chicago about 4 months ago. I can now speak to his brilliance but hell yeah Verve music is the best on the planet. RA's solo stuff is very important although a certain part of me is disappointed that only half of the songs I listen to on repeat, I love so many of his solo songs and b-sides and trying to imagine the 4 lads together again is a dream I hold alive but only by a thread. .

My second favorite (after Jalfrezi) and totally worth the wait! It's great to see how the sound of the band was evolving towards the end of the Urban Hymns sessions, and if these two songs were a hint about the sound from the post-UH album, it could be their best album, imo!

I get your point. As a fan I enjoy hearing this material. Not every artist feels the same about bootlegs for example, however in Richard's case I know he was against such unauthorized releases before, at least of compositions which have not been officially released as of yet. I understand the want to hear these songs as I have longed to hear them myself, but I also sympathize with the feeling of not wanting your material to slide from your hands before you give the go ahead.
