THE VERGER, a Short Story by Somerset Maugham

Albert Edward Foreman, a long-serving verger at St. Peter's, Neville Square, is proud of his role despite his illiteracy. When a new vicar learns of Foreman's inability to read or write, he is given an ultimatum to learn or resign.
won't reveal the twist ending here.

Ha! Brilliant story! This reminds me of my uncle Malcolm, who couldn't read or write into his adult life and earned his living as a truck driver. A similar thing happened and the firm couldn't keep him on as a truck driver because he couldn't read or write even though he had a good record. My uncle went on to build his own business as a removals man and still to this day long after his death, the firm carries on, employing a number of people and is still very successful. ❤ Rest in Peace uncle.

Just prior to reading your post, I was thinking of a conversation I had with a store owner that I did a bit of business with several years ago. A friend of his had amassed quite a substantial worth, something to the tune of a million dollars or more. The, now millionaire, had started out with one dump truck, and with the help of his wife, gone on to purchase more trucks of varying capabilities. It was the wife's job to deal with all printed matter, as the man could neither read nor write.

There is a YT movie called "Trio" that includes this and two others. The movie is quite true to these readings. The movie was my intro to SM a few years ago. The man wrote great stories!

Such an interesting story. Researching my family through old census papers online, the question of "can you read and write" was always asked.

This particular AI struggles with St. Peter’s. “St. Peter S” Still enjoyable, though.

Good tale, thanks for uploading. Some odd pronunciations by the narrator, but still a diverting short story.

Fascinating, isn’t it? The pacing and inflection are good. But it just goes to show that editing is needed to correct basic reading errors.

So if he couldn't read (and write), I suppose his wife had to do the ordering of goods and do all the paperwork?

Is this an A I narration ? If so how does it know when to switch to the East End Accent ?
